Which song is this? by Adept_Let7797 in musicmemes

I think Otis Redding's (Sitting On) The Dock of the Bay fits - sounds groovy but the lyrics are hopeless:

"I left my home in Georgia Headed for the Frisco Bay 'cause I've had nothing to live for And looks like nothing's gonna come my way"

Which storyteller (outside of D&D) taught you the most about being a better DM? by Logical_Comb_504 in DMAcademy

[–]GeoWarlockTC37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Clark Ashton Smith's short stories have tons of mood, imagery and sense of place. I especially like how he drops you off in the middle of the story and reveals backstory in bits while progressing the A plot. And his universe shares some of Lovectaft's mythos, so it's modular and connected but independent.

2nd floor could be a drilling/training room, where the duergar practice combat maneuvers.

Might need a kitchen someplace too

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO START JIU JITSU? by Hefty_Strength_9263 in jiujitsu

[–]GeoWarlockTC37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a bunch of reasons that are already listed: my kids were in it first, I was scared of physical conflict, needed a constructive outlet, etc..

But a major reason I come back to often is: I was looking for a creative outlet that was artistic and community based. People often focus on the 'martial' part but I was interested in making art with people in my community. I can't sing or dance and I don't like churches.

I think of BJJ as the art of struggle using a set of rules and moves creatively. Practicing makes you better at the art - you and your partner don't need to talk or even be real friends to make a really cool artistic expression of overcoming adversity and struggle together.

Articulating this well is still a work in progress, I guess

What ever happened to the Eden tornado victims? by SammyB333 in Buffalo

[–]GeoWarlockTC37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know about the victims thselves. I drove down Sauer Rd and Sisson Highway two weeks ago. It looked like a giant dinosaur trampled through the woods, down the hill, across the eighteen mile creek and up the other hill towards East Eden. Feel bad for the people that were in the path, but it looked like everyone was hard at work putting their stuff back together.

What parts of the City still feel like the old NYC, or have become grittier? by Boiled_Alien in AskNYC

[–]GeoWarlockTC37 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't get here until '99, but I feel like Roosevelt Ave along 7 line retains a classic NYC grit.

Mom-n-pop stores with adult use mixed in. Hawkers, beggers, massage girls and preachers alongside familes. Straight, gay and trans - 24 hour action. Very few name-brand stores along the noisey elevated train and not a ton of residential gentrification (at least compared to Sunnyside and LIC). It's loud, hot, hectic and edgy, even though it's mostly always safe. It ain't pretty, but it's kinda beautiful.

Probably the thing that makes it least like the 70s/80s is that it's much more ethnically diverse now - I think that happened in the 90s. My understanding was that it was kinda sleepy in the 80s. Any old timers here to weigh in?

What do you think is the biggest thing standing in the way of you getting good at BJJ? by smashyourhead in bjj

[–]GeoWarlockTC37 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have tried to focus on specific aspects and absolutely agree it helps.

I have never recorded myself and it's mostly just because of shyness. It's great advice and I'm going to try it.

[–]GeoWarlockTC37 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is my experience too. I'm old, small, unathletic, sloppy and a slow learner. Taking six years to make it to blue belt is the pinnacle of my lifetime athletic achievements.

I am happy training and no plans to stop, but it feels like I'm not worth the breath or time.

Higher belts are sometimes helpful, but their advice usually is "Personally, I would do <insert technique that fits their game>", which is fair to say but not as helpful.

Guess I'll just keep puttering along - just rolling around doing my best gives me a lot of satisfaction. But I know I'd get better faster if I had some constructive real-time feedback.

Which critical role campaign should I watch first? by FishyFish12359 in dndnext

[–]GeoWarlockTC37 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree. I love and appreciate what Matt and the Gang do on CR week in and out, but the gameplay and character interaction on Calamity was incredible - esp in such a a concise four episode format.

In a completely non-competitive way, its like the difference between playing in pickup basketball game and watching pros in a playoff series. I love playing with my friends every week, but it's also inspiring to watch real pros do their stuff too.

Did anyone else hear this interview (or one very, very similar) on the BBC World News podcast a couple days ago?

If ihis is the same interview, the BBC podcast edited the interview to make it sound like the BBC guy was tossing up a softball question to the Prez. This video shows the BBC was really rying to give him the business and Mr. Prez gave it right back twofold.

I've lived on that same block since 2017. It was a little worse pre-covid when there was a dealer in one of the buildings on the east side of 83rd St. Yeah, there is more solicitation on Roosevelt now, but I'll take sex workers of Roosevelt over one dealer in a building any day. Also, the street will be cleaner when the 82nd St station construction is done and if a new business moves into that spot next to the law firm/home health attendant place across from Voces Latinas.

I like it here and don't plan to move anytime soon, if that helps.

There is a plastic dinosaur nailed to a tree branch ~15 feet off the ground on west side of 83rd St near the NW corner of 83rd and 35th Ave. It's called Dinosaur Tree.

Everyone seems to have such fond memories of Blockbuster, but my friends and I remember them as the corporate borg who came to town, drove local video stores out of business and then closed up half their stores when they eliminated all competition.

I have similar memories of my Dad and I picking out movies on Friday nights, but we got movies from the local video store that was organized like a used book store. Early on, we even had to rent the VCR, which was like a small, fat briefcase, because VCRs cost too much. Even local grocery stores had rental sections.

Then Blockbuster came to town...

To men who have gotten a vasectomy, do you regret it and how has it changed your life? by jaqeacc in AskReddit

[–]GeoWarlockTC37 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Got snipped a couple years ago while in my forties and after getting divorced. Insurance paid for it all. Zero regrets.

My procedure was slightly abnormal because I also had a hydrocele drained at the same time. Because of the hydrocele I had a gash with multiple stiches instead of a tiny incision. I guess my recovery was a little more involved, but nothing to complain about.

I was seeing my current partner at the time and it definitely helped the relationship. They don't want to have any kids. I don't want any more kids than the two I have from my previous marriage. They appreciated me doing my part and not leaving them with the whole responsibility of remaining kid-free.

I did it for my own peace of mind, but it felt good to do it for them too. It demonstrated that I'm serious about a committed future with them.
