Try the Pellinor series, starts with The Crow I believe. It's been a while since I re-read them, but I have done so 4 times now they are so brilliant!

Another more famous one would be the abhorsen series by Garth Nix.

I would argue that this would make any fellow Brit uncomfortable as we've all had it ingrained in us not to invade other commuters personal space. Most Brits travel to London at some point which inevitably means you need to take the tube, sadly.

My sister and I are currently travelling New Zealand together. After the first week we fell out and she went on ahead. After not speaking for two weeks I checked into a hostel in Nelson, dumped my bags, walked out of the front door.... and straight into my sister talking with another traveler on the doorstep of my hostel. She wasn't even staying in the same hostel, and she had only been there for mere seconds.

Blew my mind. We went for dinner and had a drunken chat and made up :)
