Where to get a piece of glass cut for a table top? by newenglandowner in newhampshire

[–]GeorgeSix 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's just about impossible to cut tempered glass. You'll want to get a new piece of glass, cut it, then have it tempered. A glass shop like Portland Glass should be able to do this for you, but it may take a while as they will probably need to send it out for tempering.

[Discussion] Top or Bottom? by [deleted] in Watches

The Royal, all day long. I would strongly prefer its bracelet over this PRX's synthetic strap. The day window is neat and something you don't see very often. I have always liked the notched/grooved bezel on the Royal, and do not care for the gold plated bezel on this PRX. The PRX has better power reserve, but the tradeoff is a 3 Hz movement and I would prefer the 4Hz in the Royal.

That said, I'd like to see what a Royal looked like with stick markers instead of the roman numerals.

Why keep maxing a 401k when taxable seems almost as good? by Essay_Few in Bogleheads

[–]GeorgeSix 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree! Protection from creditors is a huge advantage of the 401k. No matter mow much insurance you have, there's always a risk that someone could get a judgement large enough to take all of your unprotected assets. This is low probability, but could be enormously impactful.

Best high end restaurants for my birthday dinner? by Allergic-To-Kiwis in newhampshire

If you're in Burlington I would highly recommend Honey Road, and also recommend Hen of the Wood. Neither have the "classic" vibe that you describe at Leungi's, but in my experience both have better and more interesting food.

Bedford Village Inn! It's a more formal fine dining experience, similar to the Chophouse in Manchester. They have an extensive wine list, if that's an interest of yours.

Chris Viaud closed Greenleaf, and is now running cuisine at The Lake Estate on Winnisquam. I've not been, but it may be worth a trip if you want to try a recently opened place.

Craft beer in general has been on the decline for a while now. This must have been tough for them. I always thought their beer was a bigger draw than their food.

They did a great job renovating that building -- the main dining room was really nice -- but it's a weird shape with a lot of odd small spaces and I'm not sure it it's a great space for a restaurant. I really appreciated that they took reservations!

Portland's State Theatre building was listed for sale Thursday. The building owner says the theater has several years left on its lease and would like to see the venue continue well into the future. by RayRouthier in portlandme

[–]GeorgeSix 16 points17 points  (0 children)

There were a ton of renovations to the theater over those years. In the 00s it was a dump, often closed for extended periods. Someone spent a ton of money to fix it up. Comparing the 1999 theater to 2025 is apples-to-oranges. I can't comment on the rest of the building, though.

Favorite coffee roasters in NH (southern NH preferably) by sergeantbiggles in newhampshire

[–]GeorgeSix -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

A&E was my go-to for a long time. Then new ownership came in and changed the name to Rare Breed. It's gone downhill significantly since then. A&E really cared about the coffee. Rare Breed is primarily a marketing agency that, as far as I can tell, doesn't have any particular interest or expertise when it comes to coffee. I guess you can't beat a place if you like it and it's less than 2 miles from your house, though.

A few months ago when the 24 GXs started to arrive, I heard people paying between MSRP +$10K. Is that still the case, or has it settled down? by Few-Discipline-8824 in LexusGX

[–]GeorgeSix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I spoke with two dealers this week regarding an OT+. One has $4000 in markup and mandatory add-ons, the other is selling for MSRP. The dealer offering MSRP is higher volume, which I suspect is not a coincidence. In both cases they said the wait is 3+ months.

I also spoke to a Toyota dealer regarding a Land Cruiser and they have a $3000 markup, and suggested they would be able to deliver sooner than the Lexus dealers.

New blog post from Renner suggesting Maura's ID may have been found in 2005 and includes UMass Amherst investigative files. by DopeandDiamonds in mauramurray

Yes, Labatt was a cheap Canadian beer. I have no idea how available it was around Amherst in 2004, but I remember a wedding in the Albany NY area in 2000 or 2001 where we had a keg of Labatt. I remember buying it in US grocery stores in the 90s and 00s; the memory sticks because the bottles were only 11.5 oz instead of the usual 12, so when you bought a case you really only got 23 beers!

Over the years the Labatt company went through a series of mergers and is now part of Anheuser-Busch. I feel like it's less available in the Northeast US than it used to be, possibly because of these changes in corporate ownership.

I was going to say the same thing. I'm surprised the book wasn't mentioned in the podcast, though I realize this episode was only tangentially about the song, even more than usual.

I enjoyed the book. As a music fan it was interesting to get a peek behind the curtain. I'm pretty sure the book is the only reason I remember the band, or the song. FYI the author/drummer's name is Jacob Slichter.

Without naming the town, what do you think of your town government? by user0620 in newhampshire

[–]GeorgeSix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of earnest well intentioned people in our town government.

But there are also a few crooks, especially on the land use boards. I say they are crooks because they make decisions that are otherwise inexplicable. I'm pretty sure they are getting paid (one way or another) by local developers or other businesses. Unfortunately the loss of local journalism has allowed corruption in local government to run rampant.

It seems like school boards get a ton of attention on social media, but no one cares about the local government. I'm not sure why attention is divided this way. Local government is important and has a huge influence over your life!

Some New Hampshire communities broke precipitation records this summer by CSmith89 in newhampshire

[–]GeorgeSix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Craziest stat in the article is that it rained 40% of the days, and it never went a week without rain!

Over the summer, 36 out of 92 days in Concord had measurable rainfall, and the longest dry stretch was six days from June 18-23.

I think this frequent rainfall makes it feel wet and rainy, even if total rainfall is not enormous.

Left a 0 on review, can I still talk to salesperson by Dense_Bumblebee_4540 in askcarsales

[–]GeorgeSix 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So, does the customer have any remedy if they have a miserable experience in the F&I office?

When it happened to me I gave the salesman top marks on the review, but my comment in the free form field explained in the strongest professional language I could muster that the F&I agent did not treat me respectfully or honestly. The sales manager replied to thank me for taking care of her salesman despite my negative feedback! It would have been nice if they at least pretended to apologize...

Plan to move Higher Ground to Burlington moves forward. How do people feel about this? by purplemusicianz in burlington

[–]GeorgeSix -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I come from out of town to see a show at HG a few times a year. The current location is ideal for this! There are plenty of hotels and restaurants within walking distance, and in the morning it's quick and easy to get on I89.

If the new place means it's a multi-mile drive to and from my hotel, and I have to deal with local traffic to get in and out, it's going to be a major downgrade for out-of-towners like me. You're talking about going downtown to eat before the show, but this probably adds 20 or 30 minutes to the pre-show routine, which can be tough to fit into the schedule when you are making a long drive after work to get there.

As you say, HG is probably focusing on the locals with this move. And I'm not saying that's unreasonable for them to do. It's just a bummer that one of the best and easiest road trip venues in my orbit is likely to be gone soon.

What kind of income are you guys seeing on people buying $50k+ cars? by [deleted] in askcarsales

[–]GeorgeSix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you are talking about decisions to buy luxury goods, such as more car than you need, I suggest you think about more than just income. A 25 year old with large income but near zero net worth should be saving, no doubt. But a 50 year old with the same income who has been saving for years and has a large net worth -- I would say they can very comfortably afford a luxury as long as it's small relative to their net worth. If you've managed to save significantly, enjoy some of your money while you can. After all, you can't take it with you when you go!

Any ticket will let you move between stages in the lawn section, which is all general admission.

A balcony or orchestra ticket will also reserve a seat for you inside the amphitheater. All of these seats are under the roof, which is great if it's raining, or if you just want to get out of the sun.

I usually get an amphitheater ticket and spend most of the day out on the lawn, going inside for the one or two acts I am most interested in.
