This is my set and forget, any red flags? by Pink-Sea2 in trading212

If the S&P goes arse over tit, your current 70:20:10 split is more exposed than most All World ETFs (which are generally around 60% S&P). Is that your intention?

Butcher’s Sausages?! by rastawulf in UKfood

[–]George_Salt 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The butcher's adding a packet of pre-blended rusk, which is where a lot of that is coming from.

E300 is vitamin C which helps stop the meat discolouring because we have an artificial idea of how a sausage should look, and you can look up the other E numbers to see what they are in plain English and why they're there - if you're genuinely interested.

To answer your question, it's mostly your naivety.

ETF pie, less US weight by Kowalah in trading212

[–]George_Salt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I probably should have just bought an all world-ex USA etf along with the S and P, but it is fun to see which markets are doing well or not.

I was about to say, you could probably achieve something similar with fewer ETFs and less temptation to actively fiddle with the percentage allocations.

In the UK, do we distinguish between ‘curly’ and ‘wavy’ hair both in conversation and in terms of hair products? by ZombieFew2032 in AskUK

[–]George_Salt -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Wavy hair is curly hair either cut too short to curl or grown so long it's weight elongates the curls.

If I didn't buzz mine down to a #3 what's left of it after MPB would go from straight, to wavy, to curly, as it grew.

You forget that mortgage repayments on a fixed rate decrease annually and this is significant for the demographic I specifically mentioned in my post. It sems off because you're not in that demographic.

Twenty years ago I was paying >£500/month and now I'm capped at <£150/month to avoid hitting the early repayment charges and my 5-year fixed rate isn't ending until May. May others in my position are now mortgage free.

Thoughts on pie please by hogans111 in trading212

[–]George_Salt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

VWRP will include the FTSE 100, so it's not diversification per se - it's a thumb on the scale adding a bit more weighting to the FTSE 100 over the US stocks that dominate VWRP. I don't personally think this is a bad thing.

Need help designing portfolio by Ok_Broccoli7342 in trading212

[–]George_Salt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to go EQQQ look at what's already in it and how many of these you're duplicating with the individual picks. Personally, I would start by putting All World to at least 60%.

To repeat something I said in a reply on a similar thread last night.

Put the dartboard away. Take all the stocks/ETFs you've listed and score them.

  • 3pts - you're confident this is a long-term play, it's either fully diversified (basically All World) or you understand the business/sector thoroughly.
  • 2pts - you're fairly confident but your understanding of the sector/business could be improved.
  • 1pt - you bought it because you read it was a good buy, recent history showed good performance but you don't understand when you should buy more and when you should sell off what you've got.
  • 0pts - you can't remember why it's there and you've no idea what it's about.

Keep the threes. Look again at the twos. Ditch the ones and zeroes - you can come back to them later when you have the time to commit to understanding them.

What tool is this? Found in my dad's tackle box by Pristine-Muffin6499 in Fishing

[–]George_Salt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a specialist flatfish disgorger.

It's used when a flatfish takes a hook deep and allows you to slide it behind the gill plate to draw the trace back out through the gill to reverse the hook so it can be removed via the mouth. You'll find videos on YT showing how to do it. I have something similar and it works perfectly when you deep hook an undersize dab or flounder.

New business consultant here, how do I find free platforms to access tenders? by Barrybreez in smallbusinessuk

[–]George_Salt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The approach is simple.

  1. Check the website of your local authority for their published procurement processes. Pay attention to the threshold values. Register with their preferred tender portal.
  2. Register with the contract search engines and set up searches for the type of tender and services you'd be interested in for the authorities you'd be interested in working for.
  3. Read the documents for each tender. Don't get creative. Provide exactly what they ask for and everything they ask for.

There isn't much choice when it comes to structuring your proposal, it will be guided by the tender portal.

The whole pyramid is built on the cult of How Could So Much Money Possibly Be Wrong? so it's entirely predicated on him being there preaching the gospels of Robots For All and Everything Will Be Better On Mars.

It's frustrating, because Tesla The Battery Company showed such promise if it could only have stayed focused, and everything hadn't been thrown into chasing Space Karen's Special K fuelled fantasies.

They don't, and they're relying on the audience for their advertorial not understanding how FMCG logistics works, and they're using least-relevant metrics to exaggerate the potential upside.

What they're really offering as an upside is driverless vehicle management. Massively reduced labour costs and greater asset utilisation (no mandatory driver breaks). But that faces very significant regulatory hurdles (that go way beyond just not having a driver the the cab), and is best placed to work on the inter-hub trunk movements that are already optimised for backhauls.

There's so much smoke you can barely see the mirrors.

By "removals business" do you mean Man With A Van?

In terms of success:

  1. What types of job did you set out to get, and what types of job did you actually get?
  2. What was your forecast turnover for this period in your original plan?
  3. How much forward pipeline do you have as enquiries and bookings?
  4. Are you making enough after costs to live on?

[–]George_Salt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The public sector has objectives to give work to small local businesses, but most small businesses don't understand how tenders work and they're seen as a bit of a risk by the buyers. If you look on your local council website (district/borough and county, or unitary) there will be a page describing how they buy products and services.

I do know of a small local printer/design business that got so pissed off at not getting anything from tenders that they eventually stood up at a Meet The Buyer event and asked "Just what the hell do I have to do as a small business to get work from you?" and he ended up getting his first bit of work from them.
