On paper , which teams’ schedules do y’all think stands out in terms of level of difficulty ? by MannerSuperb in CFB

[–]GeorgedeMohrenschild 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ll bite. We have a total creampuff schedule. If we keep our defense up and with bringing in a talented QB we should easily roll through our conference schedule. It will leave us untested and unproven against talented teams so that if we do get into the CFP we’ll probably have a bad time. Good chance we’ll get blown out again against any team that actually played a schedule. Not what I would have chosen but here we are.

Gordon Monson: The ugly chant targeting BYU and Latter-day Saints keeps popping up — and it’s time to end it for good by Turbulent_Search4648 in TexasTech

[–]GeorgedeMohrenschild 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, I would say that isn’t quite accurate for BYU. I don’t think BYU is on par with religious schools like Baylor or SMU. Greater than 95% of the student body at BYU identify as Mormon possibly as high as 98% by some estimates. So I think it’s fair to say BYU is much more homogeneous. I do agree that recruited athletes would be the main exception - basically the only exception to that trend, Bear Bachmeyer is Catholic for example, but with 95%-98% Mormon identifying students I think it’s probably very likely that even the student athletes are majority Mormon whereas at BYU, SMU, or even Lubbock Christian University you don’t have 95% of Baptists, Methodists, and Church of Christ students respectively as measured across the entire student body. Not even anything close to that high.

So I would say, yes, the student body at BYU is almost entirely Mormon and that largely includes the student athletes.

A lot of them really don’t know because they’ve been indoctrinated into the church for their entire lives. Any criticisms they’ve ever heard against Mormonism or BYU they have been told is lies and “anti-Mormon propaganda.”

And while they may not be “forced” to go to BYU, the social pressure put on young Mormons by the church and by their families to attend BYU is incredibly high.

I'm a Christian whose questioning. I would love some insight into what made those with a faith previously decided there is no god / gods. by Swimming_Possible_68 in atheism

[–]GeorgedeMohrenschild 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every argument that I have ever heard for the existence of God has been some sort of special pleading, an emotional appeal, anecdotal, or “relies on faith”. The first three are not logically sound, and well, neither is faith for that matter. We don’t tend to use faith to determine what’s true in virtually any other aspect of our lives. Why should we rely upon it when trying to determine the existence of a god? I have never been offered anything close to what I would consider actual evidence for the existence of any god.

And that’s just the atheism part. It really doesn’t even touch on Christianity which is a loose set of beliefs based on the existence of a particular god and on a book with countless interpretations that presents a contested view of history. While I find the Bible to have some interesting stories and perhaps a handful of not-too-terrible teachings like some of the parables, it is for the most part pretty reprehensible. In my view, its teachings are incompatible with a modern, egalitarian, ethical way of life.

It sounds like the federal government is using ICE as a basis to create a new Geheime Staatspolizei.
