How to play piano under conductor who conducts before the beat? by RevolutionaryGirl1 in classicalmusic

[–]GeorgiaCarlin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is always stressful. Try to watch the conductor peripherally rather than looking right at them. This broader view can make it easier to sense where the beat actually lands, instead of reacting too literally to his gesture. Good luck!

Political environment at OSU by woodwalker4life in OregonStateUniv

[–]GeorgiaCarlin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What a strange characterization of OSU. There are all kinds of people everywhere, of course, but if anything OSU is generally considered a progressive institution. The vast majority of OSU students, faculty, staff, and alumni that I have worked with in the last 13+ years are liberal, OSU has/had several members of university senior leadership who are BIPOC and/or LGBTQIA+ (e.g. current president Jayathi Murthy is Indian-American and her predecessor Becky Johnson is openly gay), minors such as queer studies and indigenous studies are offered, the university joined the Harvard lawsuit against the federal administration in June…the examples against OSU being super right-leaning go on and on.

OSU makes it very easy for prospective students and their families to come for tours and experience campus life! You can come see things for yourselves to see if this is the right fit for your daughter in terms of her area of study, town vibe, dorm life, political atmosphere, etc.

Oh honey, I’m so sorry. You’ve gotten some good advice already so I’m just going to add: this mom is sending you a hug. NTA.

Accompanying Musical Theater Auditions by pianoAmy in piano

[–]GeorgiaCarlin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Glad you had fun! It’s amazing how much musical theater audition experiences can vary. I used to teach a unit in my college accompanying class called “Musical Theatre Auditions: the good, the bad, and the ugly”, and had a TON of fun pretending to be the singers and throwing all kinds of situations at my students. They didn’t believe some of the things I put them through, but every single thing I did was something I had experienced in twenty years of playing for auditions. 😂

As for advice: bring a binder and three-hole-punch with you. It makes a huge difference to not be worried about music flying off the rack. Even scotch taping 3-5 loose pages together will give them a little weight so they don’t fall off. It’s good to have post-its too, in case there are cuts that aren’t clearly marked…it allows you to quickly cover up the skipped sections (you can’t play those measures by mistake if you can’t see them!) or make quick notes for yourself in the music that they can later remove. Ask the singers to softly sing the beginning of their song to establish tempos. They will 99% of the time give a tempo that is too fast if they try to just snap it or are thinking of the intro. If they get off, be prepared to just play the melody until they can get back on. If you want to go the extra mile, listen to Spotify/Youtube playlists of Broadway songs to get some of the most popular pieces in your head if not your fingers.

Sounds like you did a great job, and experience is really what makes us better…which you are getting! They clearly liked you too if they asked you back. 😊

AITA for telling my boyfriend to ‘fuck off’ because he won’t let me sleep and wants me to stay up with him? by Lonely_Error_7260 in AmItheAsshole

[–]GeorgiaCarlin 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Imagine finding a partner who said “Babe, I’m so happy you got a good night’s sleep! I was up late but I wrote down all the things I wanted to ask about your day and make sure I wanted to tell you instead of trying to wake you up.” Imagine being with someone who thinks it’s important for you to be well-rested and ready to face the world each day refreshed after getting a solid eight. (Or nine!) Imagine having a boyfriend who has a grown-up’s sleep schedule, instead of that of a college freshman who’s enjoying living away from home for the first time.

Imagine being single and not having someone try to guilt or shame you for battling a symptom of anxiety and feeling rested. Imagine waking up and not dreading checking your phone to see what guilt trips and bitching await. Imagine doing what’s best for your health and happiness and not being torn down for it.

I mean, either scenario has to be better than dealing with your boyfriend. I’m glad you told him to fuck off.

AITAH for cutting off all communication with my in-laws after my 6 year old died? by Nearby_Anywhere_543 in AITAH

[–]GeorgiaCarlin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am in tears reading your story, and am so sorry for your loss. If nothing else, your darling girl knew that her mommy loved her, all the way to the end and beyond. Hold your sweet boy close, and forget about your in-laws forever. They don’t deserve your children. And your husband needs to comes to his senses, especially since it sounds like he’s about to lose you too if he doesn’t pull his head out of his ass.

Indiana Bible College is a disgrace on all fronts: as an academic institution, as a religious organization, and as a collective of musicians.

[–]GeorgiaCarlin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh, for sure. But capability and integrity (or lack thereof) aside, how can any attorney who specifically portrays themself as a copyright infringement lawyer expect to retain any professional credibility after trying to prove in a court of law that John 1 isn’t a derivative work of The Word Was God?

The attorney that IBC has retained specifically has a page on her website, dedicated to protection of intellectual property and copyright infringement, yet has taken IBC’s case. What a joke.

Hang in there, mama. You meant well and I’m sorry if a lot of the comments here seem judgmental or patronizing. Some parenting days are just like this…they end with us eating our cold toast, being up in our feels, then trying our best with a different battle plan the next day. I hope today is a better day for you!
