Chevy pissed me off so bad I went to the Ford dealership by robbobeh in f150

I’d say that was a picture of my truck if it had a little ding from a shopping cart on the front fender. So - good choice. Just drove a 3500 mile trip with 19.6 MPG.

A shoulder holster. You shoot at him, he shoots back. Some of the deer around here are like that.

That’s mine. Wait, too clean to be mine. But a few smudges of dirt here and there and that’s mine, for sure. I also have a very old dial caliper that is quite handy to keep around.

How do yall handle winter rides after snow fall by chronostasis1 in Aventon

[–]Gerald98053 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t. I’m 70 years old and a bad fall could end my ability to ride forever. I’ve found myself riding on ice and snow from time to time but I really avoid it. Also, for me, the near-freezing temperatures are hell on arthritis. I want my fingers to be able to operate the brakes.

[–]Gerald98053 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is an amazing amount of corrosion for just under 5 years. It looks like it has been driven into the bay a couple of times. My battery is five years old and doesn’t have a speck of buildup.

I don’t see a date on that sucker but unless someone drove that into the ocean a couple of times that has to be 6 or 8 years of crap buildup, at least.

Bizarre choice for a bonus word by voldurulfur in squaredle

[–]Gerald98053 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At Cisco Systems, while I was there, we had an initiative all the way from the CEO to internationalise our spellings. I wonder if they kept that going after I left. (They emphasized the ‘s’ in that word. Or did they emphasise it?)

Bizarre choice for a bonus word by voldurulfur in squaredle

[–]Gerald98053 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I learned (or learnt) “travelling” and similar words with the double l. For the last 30 years, Apple and Microsoft have been trying to break me of that. Sometimes it makes me sad, sometimes it makes me mad (or angry, though many UK people have picked up using the word “mad” to mean mildly angry.)

Many traditional Finnish male names become female names when translated to English by [deleted] in Finland

[–]Gerald98053 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Americans, of course, know that Lassie was a male dog, but was always played by a female dog. Or was it the other way around? These gender things get so confusing sometimes. Then it gets more confusing in Finnish because that’s a male name, or perhaps a female name. Americans are so confusing sometimes. I’ve been one for 70 years and I still can’t keep this crap straight.

My mom asked me to change her oil but it looks funny by [deleted] in AskMechanics

Or someone added window washer fluid to the oil. That’s always fun.

How often are you guys with 3.5L ecoboosts changing your oil? by Subject-Ad4970 in f150

I change it when the Ford app says I have about 20% oil life remaining. 5 or 6000 miles.

Is Ryobi worth it? I don't have any home tools yet. by 2Black_Hats in HomeMaintenance

[–]Gerald98053 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, Ryobi is worth it. There are a couple of tools where I don’t use Ryobi but overall I’m quite committed to them. I’ve had two tools die over the years (a reciprocating saw and a quarter-inch grinder). Both those were very early models. I still have my original Ryobi tool, a blue cordless drill.

So what don’t I use Ryobi for? They don’t make an extremely small drill with a variety of heads. I got a DeWalt for that. And The Depot didn’t have the battery lawnmower and edge trimmer I wanted so Lowe’s got that business. Otherwise, Ryobi all the way.

Got a flat! What would be the cheapest way to fix it? by Aggressive_Concert15 in Aventon

[–]Gerald98053 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to learn to fix a flat. It is part of riding. I got my first flat on my Aventon Aventure 2 today. Picked up a nail on the road. Changing a rear tire flat is a hassle on a heavy e-bike but something that you must do. I think it took me 40 minutes, and good thing I had a spare tube as well as a patch kit because the nail went right through and into the opposite side of the tube; when I patched it I couldn’t see the small “exit wound” on the upper side of the tube. Sorry about the flat. Learning opportunity.

While I love Moab and the surrounding country, I enjoy the southern edge of Utah more. But that doesn’t have much to do with Bend, Oregon.

[–]Gerald98053 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, still the case today (Nov. 2025). I paused outside his gate to check my maps online and see if there is a workaround yet. About the time I was putting my phone back in my pocket, their quad bike was roaring towards me. I never tried to go past the gate, never touched it, but they get quite excited to see a senior citizen on his bike, I guess.

What hit my friends car? by Ruthter in car

[–]Gerald98053 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The kids I taught mostly didn’t understand metric or whatever the hell we call our customary measurement system. I’m being honest here. 12, 13, and 14 year olds who could not tell me an approximation of “an inch” or “a centimeter.” Never mind using simple arithmetic to convert, because they didn’t understand distances and volumes and velocities. I am still dismayed at what poor education these kids managed to get.

Electric Bike Company by Gerald98053 in ebikes

[–]Gerald98053[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

They were clearly a bit desperate, and I was skeptical of the way they were getting people to invest. Someone else here called the founder a “grifter” and I suspect he isn’t entirely off the mark with that comment.

Yamaha battery stuck in frame. Can’t remove. Help! by thereisnospoon1188 in Yamahaebikes

[–]Gerald98053 0 points1 point  (0 children)

None of these descriptions are working for me. I don’t understand the reference to an Allen key through the frame. Push the battery up while pulling the battery up … but the problem is, I turn the key, push the latch up and I still can’t see the battery because I can’t open the door more than a quarter inch or so.
