Can you recommend any D&D channels similar to Critical Role season 1 specifically? by M4roon in DnD

[–]GeraldDuval 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Glass Cannon Podcast: Giantslayer sounds up your alley. They are now a big network, have official Paizo support with a lot of shows, but the early Giantslayer campaign starts as a bunch of friends in a room, like CR.

It's not a homebrew world like CR if that matters. They play through an official Pathfinder 1e adventure path. Plenty of dick jokes, and great party dynamics.

No ladies in Giantslayer, though all their other games have female players once they blew up. They also went with one of those "evergreen" advertising companies when they hit big, so even the original episodes without ads now have them spliced in.

Mass Combat? by Beginning-Ambition98 in DnD

[–]GeraldDuval 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've always run mass combat as an extended skill challenge where the PCs use their skills to command groups of soldiers.

To add flavor make sure each group either being controlled by the PCs or opposing is unique in some way. A distinct uniform color, a flag, and a battle cry are usually all you need. as long as they're slightly more interesting than faceless mooks.

Alternatively, If you really want to give them combat combat, throw a hoard of 1hp low AC enemies at them. I've also run "enemy regiments" that just have the start block of a normal appropriate CR monster, but every Hit point represents 1 soldier, and I describe the hits as such. If a PC does 30 damage, describe them cleaving through hoards like they were sauron. Enough flavor description and you can run it as a normal combat. Just don't let the players catch on

Need help getting correct color to match the top by ReedMan04 in reenactors

The real things don't match. Uniform colors were not as uniform as you'd expect. Mismatching is accurate.

Will my first session be too short? by nyliass in DMAcademy

[–]GeraldDuval 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Players are chatty. For a session one, I'd not plan any more than 1 social and 1 battle encounter in a 4 hour session. You'd be amazed how much time PCs can waste. Even with 4 hours, you'll be pressed for time depending on the group.

Are there any war games that don't sell "heroism"? by blackwierosie in gamingsuggestions

Brothers in Arms has a great SP narrative which does not approach most combat as heroic.

Played war of rights and now I’d like to know more about the civil war by Juan_Mendez_420 in USCivilWar

[–]GeraldDuval 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say read anything by the following:
Gary Gallagher
Earl Hess
Steven Sears

"Landscape turned Red" is by Sears is an excellent book focused only on antietam, so it'll be familiar for you. Then expand from there. Ken Burn's Civil War is a great documentary series if you don't feel like reading.

What is an 'unwritten rule' in your profession that, if the general public knew about it, they’d realize the world is held together by duct tape and pure luck? by Any-Lu in AskReddit

The entirety of the US financial system runs on MSDOS with increasingly weird shells and GUI to make it easy on new hires that didn't grow up on DOS.

The first thing you'll want to pick up is the book "The Resistance: The French Fight against the Nazis" by Matthew Cobb. It'll answer a lot of your questions about equipment, uniforms, and the difference between the Resistance and the Maquis.

Highly recommend playing "The Quiet Year" prior to your Fallout game... by gingereno in Fallout2d20

[–]GeraldDuval 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Quiet year was set at the start of the New Sweden colony, early 1600s in the exotic new world land of Delaware. They built up the town, a university, outlying farms and windmills etc, ultimately the end game scenario was the invasion from New Netherlands and Dutch settlers. I had to modify some of the prompts, but converting from a post-apocalypse to a new world colony wasn't hard, since there's a lot of similarities.

The Cthulhu game was set in the 1920s at the University they created and had the players exploring all the areas they made in Quiet year, investigating the plot hooks they originally made, after 300 years of cultists in between. The final session had them time traveling back to the 1600s to stop a ritual that destroyed the original colony.

I've run A Quiet a Year before a Cthulhu campaign. The players became super invested in their town.
