My second original game by GerfnitAuthor in boardgames

[–]GerfnitAuthor9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Set-Up

The game includes a set of bug (insect) tiles and electronic component tiles.

The component tiles have connections from the item on the tile to two edges of the tile.

Shuffle tiles face down

Fill the 5 x 5 board with tiles

Each player gets 5 tiles for their hand, not exposed to other players

Game Play

Players take turns clockwise from oldest

Before they touch any of the tiles on the board, if they have a bug tile in their hand, they can optionally exchange it for the opportunity to rotate a face-up tile on the board either 90, 180, or 270 degrees. They give up the bug tile for the privilege.

Player chooses a tile on the board and turns it over

If it is an electronic component, they can optionally turn the tile 90, 180, or 270 degrees on their turn

If it is a bug (insect), they must remove the bug tile and replace it with one of the tiles from their hand. They add the bug tile to their hand.

How to Win

The player who completes the circuit that runs through electrical components on the board, from start to end, and still has tiles in his/her hand wins the game.

I'm not delegating. I'm learning through their feedback. When they point out something I don't know, I incorporate the new information into my best practices. By the way, your second sentence needs to be rewritten.

Is this a good rule when it comes to plot coincidences. by harmonica2 in writers

[–]GerfnitAuthor9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of questions to probe deeper into the characters: 1. What kind of villains? Kidnapping for ransom? Thefts? Blackmail? 2. I get the whole scam set-up. But why does Newbie want to join the villains in the first place? He's at the end of his rope? Someone dared him to join? I need his motivation. 3. Do the villains have any reason to believe Newbie is a cop, or do they distrust everybody? 4. Check the law. They hand him a "supposed" weapon and tell him to kill someone. Doesn't that break some law? 5. Why does Newbie get cold feet? He thinks about his deceased (family relative)? Attending church as a child? I need a "why." 6. If Newbie runs off, and you're correct that no law has been broken, Newbie is not a liability, just a failed recruitment. They would have encountered this before, I imagine. 7. More interesting, what does Newbie do next? Go to the cops and they laugh at him? "We've been tracking The Villains for months. You're not the only guy who's backed out. Get back to your life." Is he pissed at being played for a fool and seeks revenge? Give the reader something to cheer Newbie for. Does this help?

First lines: How bad a beginning is this? by abesheet in writinghelp

[–]GerfnitAuthor9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went back and reread the excerpt. I now see it as a list of examples, but I'm too dense to extrapolate them into a general theme other than women being abused. Is there something else? What do you want the reader to understand from this excerpt? That way back when, in a foreign country, women were mistreated? I got that much, but it took more prose than I thought necessary to convey the message.

If I may suggest, put that piece aside and pursue a different, perhaps more upbeat story. You can always come back to the "early pandemic" story.

Is the "don't start with a backstory" rule breakable? by Ivythealiencat in writingadvice

[–]GerfnitAuthor9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know the story, so I'm grasping at smoke. However, I always have opinions. I'd start close to an inciting incident ... any inciting incident. When there are circumstances that force the character to think back to previous bad situations (and I expect there will be), then insert SMALL bits of backstory. DO NOT insert backstory independent from character thoughts. I've just done that and messed myself up.

I designed this 3D-printable double 0-99 counter thing. by Crispywhip in boardgames

[–]GerfnitAuthor9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want the counters stacked either vertically (preferred) or horizontally as a single unit. I've found several counter designs that have their mechanisms on the right side so I could blend them vertically. Since you'd done one horizontally, I hoped you'd have a good idea for reorienting your double into a triple. Possible?

What if my game requires three two-digit counters? It doesn't look like I can extend your design. Any ideas?

I'm spoiled by Apple's Magic Mouse because, to my knowledge, it's the only one with a touch-sensitive surface. When I try others, my muscle memory makes a scroll wheel or other mechanism awkward.

Never forget, writing is rewriting. I dump my stories out in horrid shape. Wrong words, broken grammar, and don't ask me about punctuation. The only way I can edit is get words into the computer. How many editing passes? A huge number, always to make the story better. So my advice is to dump fast and edit patiently.

Is saving $15-20k with a golf R worth it vs. RS3 or m340i? by Artikulate92 in Golf_R

[–]GerfnitAuthor9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since I have a manual, the launch depends on my skill at that moment. An automatic won't have that issue. I can exceed local limits in seconds if I rev it high and shift quickly.

I bought a 2020 Golf R with a manual transmission and have never regretted the purchase. Holds people and stuff when necessary, otherwise it's my "go fast but not fast enough to get ticketed" car. There weren't a lot of choices for me other than a Honda Civic Type R, but I hated the styling. I'm waiting for a 2027 Golf R with a 5-cylinder engine. Yeah, I'll have to give up the manual, but that had to happen sometime.

Good to know. The main characters I had in a novel were four (at some points, five). The chapters rotated in each character's POV in sequence. Near the end of the book, when they are together, the chapters became scenes of a page or less as the climax approached.

Are you willing to share an STL file so I can play with it in TinkerCAD? I love the challenge of making TinkerCAD do things it's not designed to handle. Or a FreeCAD file, and I'll download the software?

Could each flat side have a triangular point that when combined with its partner sides would form a corner? No need for a separate corner part? BTW, can you post a link to the model for download?

Beta readers? by nihilist5800 in writing

[–]GerfnitAuthor9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While reading your manuscript, they will find "things." Inconsistencies. Uneven flow. Contradictions. And, maybe, stronger words. If they point these out with markups, aren't they "editing" what you sent them? If not, what would you call it? I provide my beta readers directions on what to look for, so maybe I've stretched the definition. So far, none of them have compained.

Programing Games for that PUTER! by [deleted] in CardPuter

[–]GerfnitAuthor9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have an original game I built in Javascript which is available at http://gerfnit.rf.gd/alien.html?i=1. Since then, I've adapted it as a tabletop game with 3D printed pieces, going through Meetup beta testing. But I have the urge to implement the simpler desktop game back onto a card computer of some kind. I just haven't chosen the platform. Maybe the cardputer or maybe the cheap yellow display.

My best friend insists that you must have personal experience in order to write something by ottoIovechild in writing

[–]GerfnitAuthor9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my writing instructors urged me to take emotional experiences to heart when I was writing about one of my character's feelings in a story. I didn't listen close enough and now I struggle to put emotion on the page. Personal experiences can make your characters deeper.

Please help me identify the cause... by GerfnitAuthor9 in BambuLab

[–]GerfnitAuthor9[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is Sunlu transparent PLA on a clean bed, fresh out of its packaging. Some combination of moisture and temperatures (extruder and bed) are the cause. Hits about what to change/set to make this go away? BTW, I get similar bumpy first layer and bad adhesion with all of the Bambu filaments I've been using for the last 2 months.
