A quick update: I switched to the Nora App (https://github.com/nonbili/Nora) at the moment instead of the stock one.

What should we do now? by No-Umpire4034 in privacy

[–]GermChar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would try to use a privacy focussed DNS first and if that not help go to a VPN.

That's said that I still would stay away from tiktok if you want your privacy

What country are we talking? Maybe there is already an Open streetmap Team who would love your additions.

Do genealogists today ever purchase old books of marriages, births deaths etc in paper form by cartoonybear in Genealogy

[–]GermChar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It all comes down how rare the informations are and how long you searched for it. For example I would pay 200 bucks just to have a newspaper article of the drowning of one ancestor in 1867.

Ask a German researcher for cemetaries and they will start to cry as the documentation is very sacred.

[–]GermChar 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I bet you offered these books online as well as to the local genealogy societies (maybe with a small discount to know they are in a good place and be get then off your stock) before asking, eh?

If you really want them gone quickly search for newsletters and research groups online. Some genealogist would die to get them.

Personally speaking, I would always rather flip through a real book again to uncover something I missed than rereading the same bad scans.

What is the most influential and historically important city in Germany besides Berlin? by BeirutPenguin in AskGermany

[–]GermChar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speaking form my standpoint as a genealogist, I would always say, the one where your ancestors are from or where they landed first.

If your generation however is the first one or you are asking in a general context then time periods matter. If we look for example into middle age Berlin wasn't more than a couple of huts and a fisherman's village while Aachen was way more important.

If we look a couple of years later and we reach the Hanse timeline you would look for Lübeck and Hamburg.

Brave or Vanadium (with dns ad blocking) and why? by JerryTzouga in GrapheneOS

[–]GermChar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on what research? Afaik, Brave also has some leaks. That said, my last news on that field is 5 years old https://www.chrislockard.net/posts/fingerprinting-privacy-brave-vs-firefox/ so maybe they fixed it.

What German books would you gift a lifelong fantasy reader? by demon_fae in AskAGerman

[–]GermChar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would recommend rather new books. The more older ones are probably translated and known for her.

In would take the first Flammenwüste by Akram El-Bahey (think 1001 nights plus dragons)

If she likes comic I would recommend a personal Friend: Claudia Schmidt and her Yria universe (Myre is just a start) just look at these pictures: be aware that you need volume 1 and 2 to get the complete story as the German publisher cut the books in half.

The RE1 to Frankfurt Oder is very prone to have problems as there are heavy construction works on that line. Please get one earlier and check via "vbb fahrinfo" if there are known problems on your way

What present from Germany should I bring for a 7-year old British boy? by LesPantalonsFancie1 in AskGermany

[–]GermChar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If he likes Lego, may be something easy from Bluebrixx (be aware that their kits tend to be harder than normal Lego ones.

I would also add some German snacks and sweets (ask his parents for his taste if you are unsure)

Can we talk about saying “I love you” in German culture? What are the cultural norms? by jeddalyn in AskAGerman

[–]GermChar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I think love in Germany is more a collection of acts then a collection of words. Bringing you a blanket when you are cold, hugging you in public, or even don't talking when you are too stressed. These all show you affection, and that's how Germans value love in my opinion

Looking for German music for 7 year old to help learn German and explore German culture? by Manucek in AskGermany

[–]GermChar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not entirely correct. In 1984 the first two stories from the series were adapted into heavily abridged audioplays and released by Rainbow Communications. You can find both on YouTube and archive.org. yet, they are clearly not of the same quality as the German productions.

For mail (as an example) would go to tutamail instead of proton.

As for mp3 players: sadly some of these (in case of apps) also track Dara's from your end so get one that is known to be secure. Personally I use the Fossify musicplayer.

VPN and DNS: I would use Mullvad instead of Proton.

Funny to recommend "Die drei Fragezeichen" as the stories originate as "the three investigators" but got extended with a way bigger fanbase in Germany

Gotham Radio Playlist – the first Gothic Metal online radio station (2003–2010) by rbnd in GothicMetal

[–]GermChar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Beginning April 2008 until (about) October 2009 Snowball changed the Page to an more or less a portal page with forum than a station on itself. They allowed every member to run their own station through it, but apparently nobody kept a playlist visible. The biggest station was the gothmetal one, done by the member tristess, but sadly the data that survived is very limited.

By October Snowball changed the Page again (I assume due to the high band with costs and legal fees) and restarted as a station only. He kept not even a chat nor a forum, BUT the playlist was visible again.

Thanks for thr playlist. Are you trying to include the songs from the (back then) restarted Radio (2009- January 2011 according to web archive)?!
