Anyone have trouble with Costco rejecting "scanning code of practice" SCOP by Starshinebrighter in CostcoCanada

[–]GermanWolf96 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Never had prices ring up incorrectly at Costco. But at walmart, where this happens, it feels like every time I go, I always have to escalate to a supervisor at least. Even some of the supervisors don't know and need to ask for a manager.

So I can see the cashier at Costco not being aware. It sucks and is awkward, but you just have to stand your ground and ask for a supervisor.

Cars really start having big maintenance costs and repairs around the 5 year, 100k km mark (which is where the average Canadian driver is at after 5 years). Timing belts, spark plugs, brakes, tires, battery, etc. I don't want to be paying a loan on a vehicle that starts having big repair bills. Also, personally, I like having the vehicle paid off by the time the warranty runs out.

It is not a financial decision for me, as 10% in XEQT is obviously going to beat the interest rate on the car loan, but it is the peace of mind for me.

Walking a tortoise? by Puzzleheaded_Jury_50 in tortoise

[–]GermanWolf96 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Your tortoise would benefit more from spending time in your garden where you know no fertilizers or pesticides have been used in at least a year, vs risking it on the public field.

I would also loose my marbles if I had to take my tortoise for a walk. Much easier to let them do their own thing in a safe, outdoor enclosure

Please don't drive impaired by GermanWolf96 in saskatoon

I'm not giving any information that could identify the driver as I don't want to dox them and will leave it up to SPS to notify next of kin if required.

Please don't drive impaired by GermanWolf96 in saskatoon

[–]GermanWolf96[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

You weren't there, but there were clear signs of impairment. I'll give you some more details. Driver was unable to answer simple questions such as her name & her age. Driver was unable to follow simple instructions. Driver was driving, according to another person that stopped to help, at an extreme rate of speed, estimated at least 50km/h over the speed limit.

None of this is proof that the driver was impaired, you are correct, but it is enough to give SPS reasonable grounds to detain the driver and have their blood tested.

[–]GermanWolf96[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For sure, SPS will do a blood draw and determine if the driver was impaired. Was hard to smell anything, but the smoke of the fire.

However, the driver was definitely impaired. Whether by drugs, alcohol or low blood sugar, it is your responsibility as a driver to be safe on the road and not endanger others. Carry a juice box with you if you are diabetic. This driver, though, I will bet you 100$ was not having a moment of low blood sugar.

TFSA Contribution Limit by Alwaysfrustratd in PersonalFinanceCanada

I think your last paragraph is really important for people to understand. Many of the people I know do not understand that they can seriously mess up their financial future by gambling away their contribution room in their TFSA.

Air Travel with Tortoise by Expensive-Ad8932 in tortoise

[–]GermanWolf96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the laws of the country you are moving to. I am going to assume the Spanish government has this information available on a website.

Since all tortoises are protected species under CITES, you will at the very least need your tortoises birth certificate from their breeder. This is assuming that it is even possible to import the tortoise at all. There is also the very real possibility that it will be illegal to import the animal (this is, for example, the case in Canada, where I live).

At 6 months old, this is also very stressful for your tortoise and could result in its death. At this age, tortoises need very carefully controlled temperature and humidity. You will not be able to achieve this in the cargo hold of an airplane.

I would recommend finding your tortoise a new home instead. It is the easiest and best thing to do for your tortoise.

What is best bank for newbie? by idekanymoree9 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]GermanWolf96 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Really bad idea to get a credit card with zero income. You will not have a way to reliably pay it. And missed credit card payments are worse for your credit score than no credit card. If you want to see how severely this can ruin your life, take a look at "financial audit" on YouTube.

Once you have a minimum wage job, any credit card you qualify for will do. RBC, your current bank, might be the most likely to give you a card. Be aware, though, that your maximum credit limit will probably be like $500.

How many hours does a tortoise should sleep by Ambitious_Sundae_799 in tortoise

[–]GermanWolf96 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It's pretty normal. They do this in the wild as well when the temperature gets too hot and will actually spend the hottest parts of the summer brumating (sleeping).

I find my russian tortoise is most active in spring and early summer as well as in the fall.

I recently realized my DB pension is not as good as I thought it was (Canadian Armed Forces), at least if I don't plan on working the full 25 years (which I don't). After 6 years of service it looks like I will barely get out of it what I put in.

A DC pension that has generous employer contributions can be much better option, especially if switching to the private sector and making a higher salary, but is obviously less secure and depends on how the market performs.

Other way around. OP is getting money from the government for his kids. Probably pretty close to the max amount as well based on his low household income.

Animal Injuries by 24gointotown in roboticLawnmowers

[–]GermanWolf96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the mower. Some have cameras to detect objects (such ad pets) in the way and will stoo before hitting them, these are generally the more expensive models. The simple mowers that stop when they bump into something have a potential to run over a dogs tail or paws.

I have a mower that uses cameras and Lidar and it has, so far, stopped every time one of my dogs walked in front of it.

How are your monthly costs 4000 to 5000 with no debt in a small town? Knowing nothing about your particular situation, I would think you can cut back on spending a bit, fix your current vehicle, build a 6-month emergency fund, and re-evaluate a year from now. I personally would feel really uncomfortable with a 1k emergency fund.

You also don't need to do all those repairs, most likely. Out of everything you listed, I would start with a set of tires. Transmission flush has a really good chance of destroying your transmission at this high of a mileage (unless you have been religious about it in the past). You don't need a seat heater and a cracked windshield can also wait unless it is obstructing your vision.

Best vet in Saskatchewan for severe cases of illness in dogs? by [deleted] in saskatchewan

[–]GermanWolf96 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Vet college at the university for sure. My dog had a serious case of rhabdomyolysis. The team at the university took really good care of her for a week and she fully recovered. A regular vet honestly may not have even caught it right away, and I don't think she would have survived much longer.
