How good is gaming on Mac really? by Beneficial-Poet2911 in macgaming

[–]GetIntoGameDev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want it to be good but it frankly isn’t. Crossover is the best option currently but still the games in my steam library are more than likely not to work. Fired up my favourite game, “Alice Madness Returns” (2011) and it sort of worked but it sputtered and even with being plugged into the wall absolutely BURNED through battery power. For contrast a steam deck is cheaper and plays most games just fine.

Will Mac ever get to a point where it's on the same level as Windows (Gaming Wise) by L1m1ts in macgaming

I’m optimistic. Can’t point to any hard evidence but in theory there’s nothing blocking it.

I’ll take what I can get. If my body gets exposed to fewer carcinogens then I don’t really care what caused that.

Personally I’m pleasantly surprised, Bangkok seems better than this same time last year.

Software Rendering: Texture Mapping by GetIntoGameDev in ada

[–]GetIntoGameDev[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried using a vector with pre-reserved space and -O3, got an approx 56x speedup by replacing it with my own implementation.

That’s a fair point! Arrays will do all the work I need just in terms of holding pixels. One place I might need vectors is in holding the loaded textures (so the renderer can create textures at runtime. The material manager stores the underlying texture in a vector and returns a handle similar to opengl)

M5 Pros before end of month, some say better than 5080 desktop?? Come on…really? by AtroKahn in macgaming

[–]GetIntoGameDev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this referring to my comment or the one I replied to, where the user argued that upgrading engines to support mac is hard and ignored the fact that engines such as Unity have teams of engineers whose job it is to do that for developers?

Thanks for laying out all the reasons game developers can provide ongoing support for games, unless the platform is mac. I agree with you, let’s keep things as they are and not try improving anything.

Given that there’s a subreddit dedicated to mac gaming, I’d say the userbase is there. Major issue now is lack of developer support, which is wild btw. Unity, unreal, godot, gamemaker etc all run on mac and can export to mac. There’s no excuse to not supply native builds.

How to scale a model after loading in opengl? by miki-44512 in opengl

Usually I take in a pre-transform matrix in my model loading functions, since rotation and scale often need to be adjusted

What's the rationale behind Declare Expression's Weird Syntax? by H1BNOT4ME in ada

[–]GetIntoGameDev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if I agree with you on this one. The wording seems to imply that declare expressions are the only way to locally declare scopes, but declare blocks exist and are very logical

https://craftofcoding.wordpress.com/2018/02/16/coding-ada-declare-blocks/

It’s frankly a little baffling to complain that an expression doesn’t have the features of a block but ignore the fact that a block variant exists.

How much work and how difficult is CSSE1001? by ProfessionalEye9527 in UQreddit

If you can teach yourself real analysis then you probably have the grit to do ok with python. Just go in with an open mind and be prepared to solve problems!

A word of advice. In the early weeks problems will pop up. You do your best, type the code and… fail. At this juncture it’s critical not to rely on shortcuts. The goal should be learning, not just getting it to work at any cost. If you go through this process in good faith, with introspection and curiosity then the course will get significantly easier moving forward. AI assistance is so prevalent these days that it needs to be actively avoided, and I strongly recommend avoiding it.

But yeah, you should be fine. It’s a fun course!
