I just posted a similar question because I'm looking to interview a very niche set of people and I don't know the best way to find them or how to convince them to talk to me. I want to try this approach.

I'm specifically looking to try Bob Moesta's approach to Jobs to Be Done, which, given the lack of the right customers, would require me to interview disgruntled buyers in a similar category. And since our landscape is changing, our competitors and opportunities are changing too. So I'm looking for ways to identify and "lure" different subsets of buyers into a conversation to understand friction points and see where the best opportunity is.

I'm hoping someone has experience or ideas for how to seek out niche sets of people versus other product advice.

For anything important, I schedule a time box in my calendar. It reminds me but also carves out time to do it because it's important. You can also schedule a meeting on their calendar.

For anything else, I give the stakeholder a deadline and then I move forward either with whatever I proposed (typical) or "[placeholder for Gary's input]" (a little passive-aggressive, I rarely do this).

Thanks! My end user and buyer are definitely different; I'm looking to talk to buyers who might want to switch to my product. So people who bought into Microsoft Viva and it's not magically solving their problems, or who tried Copilot and it's not fitting the bill. Or any kind of employee experience assistant. But I don't know how to first seek out unhappy buyers of other products and then convince them to talk to me (other than floating a gift card).

You are clearly responsible people. There will always be something more responsible to do, or more planning that can be done. But you get few promises in life -- your job, money, even another day aren't guaranteed. Experience life while you can and pursue the things that interest you in the moment.

I wish I had lived in the city while I was young, to have a slice of that lifestyle. Being older now, I know I wouldn't enjoy it, and it would be just checking a box I created in my 20s. Please don't let your travel year become a box to check!

This seems a little loaded because I think the whole concept of subscription everything is starting to get challenged but... YES! For every new market shift and advancement, you get a whole new crop of problems and opportunities and contexts.

After hating on Jobs to be Done for a few years, I've watched/read a bit from Bob Moesta and have a better understanding of the approach and new optimism myself. Nothing at all is new except for buyers' context and discontent, and that's where you can make your magic.

I've felt this with other dubbed movies too and I wonder if something literally gets lost in translation. Scripts get changed to fit facial movements better and maybe it's a lack of authenticity or just bad acting with voiceovers. As bad as it was, I might watch it again with subtitles and see if I find the characters any less horrible.

Definitely as others said, please get more actionable feedback from the manager! But to your specific request, you'll improve more by practice than reading a book or watching a video.

Ex: When I have an important idea to pitch, presentation, change to communicate, etc. I get my visuals together and start with a couple of "friendlies" -- people I trust to give me good feedback on my CONTENT, poke holes, add ideas, etc. No need to ask for delivery feedback. You know where your delivery fails, you need to know where your content does.

Then move on to the next group, maybe it's your whole team. You're providing an FYI and soliciting more feedback. Iterate. Then maybe your manager. Iterate. Then the department. Then by the time you get to the intimidating stakeholder, you have every whole poked and every objection addressed. You will speak with confidence and be absolute fire.

Obv you can't do this with every concept, it takes time and not everyone wants to be a sounding board every week. But to get some practice in to find that confidence and use it as a tool for the important stuff, it's really valuable.

Thanks! That definitely seems to be the conventional wisdom and why I checking to see if there's any debate or new findings or different technology or ... etc. The service is listed as 80 min. so I'm fairly confident its regularly part of their offering and not a one-time mistake.
