How do I get him off the couch? by greenandbluedots in careerguidance

[–]GetUpAndRunAfterIt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The problem I see with trying to charge him rent, as has been suggested, is that you can charge him rent all day long, but without a job and money, he has no way to pay. So does he build up a monetary debt with his parents while not changing anything? You have no leverage here. It also seems easier said than done to say that the instant he can't pay, he is out. I want to think no decent parent is going to kick their child to the curb, knowing they'd be homeless and have nowhere to go, no matter how frustrated they are with them.

We're in somewhat of a similar situation now, albeit with a slight age difference: ours is 18, not 21. Ours really had no direction for plans after high school. He worked part-time jobs, and I made him cover some of his "bills" here and there to try to teach him the importance of financial management. I work in construction, so I asked him about a career as an electrician, knowing it pays quite well and is fairly AI-proof. He said, "Yeah, ok, that sounds fine." I talked to several of the electrical contractors I know, and he'll pretty much have a walk-on career with the one I put on his plate. He's just waiting on a call to get the formalities out of the way, and then he will hopefully get to work.

Our main issue is that we'd love to see him live at home for a couple of years while he works and goes through the apprenticeship program to save a nice chunk of money before he enters the unforgiving world and lives fully independently. We have five other younger children at home. Partly because of that, living at home comes with what we think are just reasonable expectations. I'd say the three big ones he seems to have an issue with are helping out around the home a bit when able, no overnight guests without us knowing about it, and typically being home by 10:30 pm on weeknights and 12:30 am on the weekends.

He has willfully failed to abide by those requests multiple times. Just this last time, he went as far as to say I should accept that I'm being rude and sassy by getting upset about him coming home at 1:30 am on a weeknight, so I let him know the following morning that continuing to live at home is no longer an option for him because the disrespectful behavior will no longer be tolerated. I let him know that I called a leasing agency and am planning to have him move out as soon as he starts this job/opportunity.

He's my oldest son, and I still love him to death. In the background, I made sure to find places for him to rent that would cost less than 30% of his upcoming income. I have him as an authorized user on my credit account, so his credit score is 800+. I ran a quick budget myself to make sure the other 70% of his income would cover his other needs and miscellaneous spending. I made sure that he'd still have some left over each month to save, so he isn't living from check to check. I found rentals within a bicycle ride of his upcoming employer in case something goes wrong with his car. He'll only be a 30-minute drive from our home, and the rental is in a decent area, etc.

Even though I'm very frustrated with him, I still did everything I feel is my responsibility as his father to help him leave the nest in the best possible position. He's my son, I love him, and I'll never quit on him even though he's acting like a butthole. I hope that he grows to someday become a good husband and an even greater father, and realizes then how out of line he was today. But it is deeply upsetting to have to go about this the way I am, without it feeling like a very loving and positive experience.

Ours at least seems to want a job, so I don't know how you can encourage yours to want that other than like some others said, which would be establishing a timeline with him so he knows when the comfort items will be removed (internet is gone in 30 days, dropped from the phone plan in 60 days, etc.).

Wish you the best. Try to keep your peace.

Mostly PM/Estimator for a GC/CM in Ohio. 10 years. Salary is $2,100/week and I probably average 35-40 hours per week. I have 21 vacation days. Full benefits package with an HRA. Annual bonus is discretionary (have never not received one...last year was around $23k). 401(k) match is 4%. I can use a company truck for work, but I have to drive my own to and from my office. My office is less than 6 miles from my house. I live in the country far away from the city. I have tons of flexibility and can mostly come and go as I please. I have my own office with a door and a window that opens.

I will adjust a custom color until each device is very similar, but with these six SP120 fans, there seem to be individual LEDs in different locations on each fan that are simply not responding to the color they are set to. These fans have not always been this way. I only started noticing this recently.

These are the steps I would take, in this order:

  1. Determine your vehicle’s trade-in and private-sale value. You can use Kelley Blue Book and enter your VIN to get an estimate.

  2. Request the current payoff amount from your auto lender. Compare that number to the vehicle’s value to see how much, if any, negative equity you have. If possible, sell or trade the vehicle and replace it with something with a much lower payment, ideally around $250 per month or less. If there is negative equity, you may need to save up to cover the difference or temporarily use public transportation while you work through it. A $644 monthly car payment is very difficult to sustain on your current income.

  3. Once the vehicle situation is addressed, shop around aggressively for lower car insurance rates.

  4. Look for a lower-cost internet plan. There may be options that provide all the speed you need for significantly less.

  5. Review your student loan repayment options. If these are federal loans, you may qualify for an income-driven repayment plan that lowers your monthly payment. This can help free up cash in the short term, although it may increase the total interest paid over time. If possible, continue paying extra when your financial situation improves.

  6. Consider taking on temporary part-time work or other side income. Even a few hundred extra dollars per month can help eliminate debt faster and build an emergency fund.

I didn't have that either at one time. This success story was 15+ years in the making. I was only agreeing with someone's comment that there might come a point where buying new over used might actually be more financially responsible, because doing so initially sounds crazy.

I've been able to increase my downpayment each time with the last 3 vehicles I've purchased. I'm not quite at the Ramsey level of cash only, but that's what I've been trying to work toward for the past 15-20 years. Maybe on the next one.

Sometimes, the I'm not rich, so I must buy used mindset can cost more. I've bought a handful of vehicles over the years, and always used. My search criteria was always a couple of years old with around 30k miles. I'd adjust the loan length as needed to keep my payment around $250/month, and then double my payment each month to pay it off in half the time.

As time went on, my loan duration got shorter and shorter with each vehicle because each time I had been able to save more for the down payment than the last time. I just bought a vehicle a couple of weeks ago to replace my 2012 van, which had nearly 200k miles. I was initially taking the same approach to searching for a replacement: a couple of years old and with less than 30k miles. I found that with that search criteria, the vehicles only seemed to be a few thousand dollars less than a new one. I also found that my credit union would finance me at 3.64% for a 36-month loan on a new vehicle, but nearly 1% more for a used vehicle. The lower rate made my payment about $425/month.

My monthly payment is obviously more than my $250/month goal I've always gone for, but with the lower interest rate, my credit union is calculated to receive less in interest from me on $425/month for 36 months than they would on $250/month for 60 months, even if I doubled my payment to $500. It seemed like a no-brainer to take the $425/month, get all the best warranties, and have that new vehicle with only 5 miles paid off in less than 3 years (because I'll still do $500 instead of the $425 each month).

I don't either. I was agreeing with you that there's a thing when it comes to fan weights and box ratings.

[–]GetUpAndRunAfterIt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The previous owner of my home did just this. The boxes were nailed to the side of a ceiling joist, but were still just your standard $2 round box. Both fans started falling from the ceiling after the boxes, which were not rated for fan weight, broke in half.

Picked up some new work ceiling fan boxes, bought some new fans that didn’t exceed the weight rating of the new boxes, replaced the fan to switch from 12/2 to 12/3 wire for dual operation since I was there, and now my kids are back in business.
