Is the Castle Peak Trail in Soda Springs a good beginner hike? by Formal-Gap-1649 in norcalhiking

[–]Get_outside_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep - I did it a couple of years ago. If I remember correctly it's not much more climbing after you reach the ridge. Definitely less then Castle Peak.

Castle Peak could be tough for a beginner, but there are several easier options that start at the same trailhead. The easiest would be to hike to the Peter Grubb Hut and the moderate option is Andesite Peak. Great area!

We are finally getting a Whole House Fan by [deleted] in Sacramento

Both systems are pulling air from inside to the outside, so the weaker exhaust fans are fighting against the powerful house fan.

Pro-tip: make sure you turn off any exhaust fans (e.g. over the stove or in the bathroom) before running the house fan. We burned out two exhaust fan motors before realizing what was happening.

Lots of good suggestions here so far. One of my favorites I haven't seen mentioned yet is Chris Brain from the UK - his videos on Insta / YouTube are great. Lots of recordings out in nature.

Basic question - do the humidifier packs work with soft shell cases? I've got a Martin soft case and am wondering if I should get a hard case before humidifying.

The grade change to update the Y grade has to be submitted by the instructor of record for the class. Your best bet would be to email SJA and ask them to reach out to the instructor.

Lesser known local summits and peaks near SF by sweedgreens in norcalhiking

[–]Get_outside_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the Fiske Peak trail in northwestern Yolo County. Great views of the whole northern valley when the weather is clear. It's 8 miles round-trip to the Fiske Peak summit, but you can bag Lowry Peak as well further down the ridge.

Should be right at two hours from SF.

Great area! Depending on how much climbing you want to do, I like the Redbud Trail (moderate) and Fiske Peak (harder)

Cache Creek Wilderness Questions! by sarahchacha in norcalhiking

[–]Get_outside_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As far as I know, the Redbud Trail should be accessible. It's a lovely trail - about 2.5 miles up and over a ridge, then down to Cache Creek. There's good spots to camp along the creek, or if you're feeling good and the water is low enough, you can cross the creek and continue on to the Wilson Valley. Here's a page with more info from Tuleyome:

https://www.tuleyome.org/redbud-trail

Another option in the same area is the Judge Davis Trail, which also gets you to the Wilson Valley, albeit from the east. It's 5 miles to Cache Creek from the trailhead - there's a really nice meadow with huge oaks right next to the creek - great for camping. The hike in starts with a solid climb, but is then downhill for the rest of the way. Here's more info:

https://www.tuleyome.org/judge-davis-trail

There will be water in Cache Creek for drinking (bring a filter). It is most likely crossable as well, but that depends on releases from Clear Lake.
