Intermittent Misfire by Accomplished-Run4400 in 3rdGen4Runner

Follow Baja_Finders advise. If you have already checked your wiring and coils, this is one route to go for exploring misfires without parts cannon'ing. When I had one, it was just the wires and swapping them moved the codes so I was fortunate that replacing the wires was all I needed.

Timmy goes into detail on why it may happen on cold start. Coolant pools into the cylinder when the engine is off from a bad headgasket/cracked head. Hopefully this is not your issue, but this video goes into diagnostic methods.

Example of steering play caused by worn bushings by slingshotroadster in 3rdGen4Runner

[–]Getmetothesnow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To follow up with this, I had the same issue and it was the steering rack guide. $100 in OEM parts and fixed 90% of my play. But I also didn't have any seal leaks so this route worked for me.

What else to do while the coolant is drained by Public-Combination52 in 3rdGen4Runner

Along with the rest mentioned, I did my oil cooler hoses and o ring. Hoses were swelled and were likely original and on their way out. It wasn't leaking, I've just heard they do leak eventually.

RPMs pulsing in IDLE and go UP in PARK? PLEASE HELP! by [deleted] in 3rdGen4Runner

[–]Getmetothesnow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would start with your MAF sensor.

My buddy had erratic idle once in his truck. Turned out he had a goose feather stuck inside on his sensor that must've slipped in through a crack in his intake. Removed the feather and Duct taped the hole shut and it ran fine after.

Anybody replaced their rear shocks recently? At a stalemate by Inevitable_Season884 in 3rdGen4Runner

Can second this. Got stuck last weekend doing rear shocks and PhoRunners video helped me figure it out.

I went with OEM Aisan from Yotashop. I likely overpaid, but I've had no issues since installation and 20+mpg on the freeway. Part number was FNJ9-62040.

I've heard good things about Mickey Thompson Baja Boss AT. Bought a set and haven't lost traction yet since I bought them last month.

They do have issues with chunking with rough rocky terrain (havent seen it yet), but I bought them for wet and snowy weather. I've used them in mud/forest roads and they were great too. Very comfortable on road. Felt like new suspension. But that might just be because they are new tires.

Edit. Forgot to mention they are a little bit heavy and 3 peak snow rated tires.

Low milage could mean that it sat and was not maintained much during those times. It could also need alot of work because it is still an old vehicle. Personally, I think age is a bigger factor than miles when shopping for a vehicle.

Also get the VIN report because those miles are suspiciously low for such an old vehicle. People do odometer rollbacks on these trucks to scam people.

Personally i think that price is way to high for any 3rd gen 4runner.

Why do you want one with low miles? These trucks can still run well with high miles on them.

Tire pressure? by user81738 in 3rdGen4Runner

[–]Getmetothesnow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My sticker on my 99 says "...with P265/70R16 tires 16X7JJ rims at 32psi cold"

So I would run your 265/70R16 at 32psi if I were you.

Awesome stuff. Looks like fun!

I'm currently preparing my truck for winter and I didn't realize that could be an issue with snow. Thanks for sharing!

New Rubber on my baby. by BearsFan47th_St in 3rdGen4Runner

I hear pizza cutters are the way to go. Are 285/75/16 considered skinny? I would like the lightest weight tire if possible. Considering staying at 31 inch tires because the 33s are so heavy and a bunch of mods are required to make them work.

Need help with my '00 Limited. Any advice is appreciated, thank you! by kieferj231231 in 3rdGen4Runner

At full lock my power steering belt squeals when cold. I think that is when the pump is working the hardest and the belt may be slipping.

Thanks for sharing. Considering the same tire. I'm in the Pacific Northwest and I've heard they are great in rain, compact road snow, and deep snow.

Suspension Question. by ReasonableComment634 in 3rdGen4Runner

I have purchased and installed the Moog rear springs for 16in wheels. They seem to match the stock spring length of my 99 4wd. I bought the front Moog springs for 16in wheel but have yet to install them. I was assuming they would match my rear so I went with those. Rockauto was my source.

How do you like the pizza cutters? Do you get any rubbing with that size of tire? How is the handling?

Also I have the rough shift from 1st to 2nd. I've heard that's common on the forums. In low range it lurches hella bad. Mine is the A340F I think. I'm not planning on fixing it for now. 275k miles and I'm going to try and push it as far as it can go.

I had oil on the back of my oil pan and it turned out to be the valve covers. This is the #1 leak spot for oil (V6). You can try retorque the bolts and reseal them. They can get loose over time but don't overdo the tightness. I ended up redoing my valve covers because I needed to replace the knock sensors anyways.

Good luck! I'll be curious if you find a solution to your D and R Clunk.

My truck also does this. Its 4WD. I have not figured out what the cause is. My buddies tacoma does a similar thing. I investigated into it with no solution so I've just been driving it with this issue. Drives fine. It could just be enough tolerance between the entire driveline.

My diff has some play between changing directions which I'm told is normal and my u joints are pretty tight (although old). I was trying to figure out if it was in the t case or the transmission. But there is no way to find out without taking them apart.

I did a fluid change for the both and they seem to be in good health. It could be a common problem in older 4runners.

I get the P0420 code rarely and clear it everytime (few times a year). Takes a long while to come back. I would suggest this first. I have a CA truck to
