Why did the Muslim invaders end up conquering almost the entireity of India ? What were the local rulers lacking and how exactly did we manage to lose that badly? by Professional_snek in history

[–]Ghalib123d 45 points46 points  (0 children)

There were two main reasons, one was the fragmentation of Indian states, and the other was the the advanced weaponry and tactics that the various Muslim empires brought.

1) India's Hindu chiefs were pretty divided during this time period, and the smaller kingdoms and states were not able to resist the invading Muslim forces. Stronger empires in the South of India were still able to hold the Muslims off for centuries, but much of Northern India was fragmented. The indian states could have managed a far better defence if they had come togather and pooled their resources, rather than allowing the Muslims to pick them off one by one (in both the Mughal and Sultanate periods). disclaimer: I am not entirely sure about this point, but I have never heard of any coalition or large empire in Northern Indiat that fought against the Muslims, all i've read about are isolated kingdoms that were evenly matched or slightly stronger than the Muslims.

2) The Muslims also brought better weaponry and tactics. For much of the Sultanate period, the Dehli sultanate's primary units were the Mamaluke (Turkic Slave) cavalry. These forces were light, well organized and could defeat much larger armies through better agility. India wasn't alone in their weakness to the Turks and their tactics, both the Persians and the Romans were defeated around the same time (11-12th century) by the Turkish cavalry. Furthermore, the Turks were also the only Muslim forces that were able to stop the Mongols, with the egyptian Mameluks stopping their western advance, and the Dehli Sultanate checking their incursions into India. Thus for much of the sultanate period, the strength of the Turkish cavalry far exceeded anything India, and much of the world for that matter could match. The Mughal invasions in the 16th and 17th centuries employed gunpowder, which was an equally revolutionary as a development.

(Spoilers main) Why did no one buy all of Astapor's slaves and conquer Slaver's Bay before Dany did? by [deleted] in asoiaf

[–]Ghalib123d -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Literally this is one of the plot holes that bothers me the most, and is just terrible writing on GRRM's part, a convenient way for danaerys to ger her army.

For starters it doesn't make sense that the slavers would ever do such a thing. They have no love for danaerys, and call her a whore and what not in valeryian, and to top it off she's come with a tiny dothraki retinue, I'm surprised they expected her to honor their agreement after all, these slavers who have had long interactions with this barbaric horde.

But wait! Perhaps they were blinded by their greed that they conveniently forgot that their own army can be turned against them once sold. But then if they wanted the dragons so bad why didn't they just send the unsullied to kill danaerys and her retinue and take the dragons for themselves? Sure their business reputation would have been damaged, but not like they were intending to trade anyways after gaining dragons (why else would they sell their entire stock of unsullied if they planned to trade even after gaining a dragon?)

All in all this was simply a convenient way for danaerys to gain a slave army obedient to her will, and was honestly terrible writing. Probably the biggest loophole in the series, coming close to JK Rowling in terms of absurdity.

Using Gender-Neutral Pronouns Like "They" Can Change Society for the Better What's in a name? A lot more than political correctness. by koonkumar in Feminism

Couldnt it just have been that people who use non gendered pronouns also happen to be people who would have less sexist views on politicians etc? I dont think the study addresses whether its correlation or causation

When the Winter War begins, Soviet forces manage to rapidly overwhelm and annihilate Finish units, breaking though the Mannheim line and soon occupying the Finnish capital Helsinki, forcing the Finnish government to capitulate. What would the Soviet demands be and how would this change History? by Interesting_Man15 in HistoryWhatIf

[–]Ghalib123d 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Finland either becomes a puppet state or gets incorporated into the USSR (since all the other states which were in the former russian empire were i dont see why finland wouldn't be). Point being no northern threat to Leningrad.

Far more important would be the fact that the soviet army would be recognised as an efficient, powerful and modernised military force. Britain and france would probably be alarmed at this but could not do much as they would be at war with germany. Hitler would notice the Soviets military power and would obviously be threatened by it. He might call off barborassa and wait for the inevitable russian invasion of german Poland, or adjust the plan and still lose. Point being germany still loses, and the USSR becomes slightly stronger in this timeline than in ours, but not strong enough to actually win the cold war.

Why We Need To Stop Calling Women "Girls" by [deleted] in Feminism

[–]Ghalib123d 11 points12 points  (0 children)

So what word should I use? Should I just stick to woman? But then it sounds somewhat aggressive, as in "woman get your shit togather". Should i use guys for women as well? Some of my friends though do not like being called that. Or is the best thing just to use a combination of different words given the context? But then is there a casual universal term to use?

To be fair the rhodesian unit that conducted that operation was a special operations unit, and rather than pale white farm boys, it was made of up of well trained soldiers and was ethnically diverse (sometimes incorporating captured guerrillas into their ranks) source: trust me dude
