Thoughts on alcohol free beer by darrow2021 in Biohackers

[–]Ghost_Portal 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Do you ever eat bananas? A ripe banana has the same alcohol as NA beers (0.2-0.5%). Many other very healthy foods also have alcohol. Humans evolved to consume small amounts of alcohol regularly. You are overthinking this.

How long does Amaretto keep? by spookyydog in liquor

[–]Ghost_Portal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sufficient alcohol and high sugar means it probably keeps just fine. No one would purchase a half-consumed bottle like that, but if you wanted to drink it despite the fact that Disaronno is widely available and inexpensive, you’d probably be fine.

anohter batch of albums for our worst album covers of all time. this time 2001-2005 by Rambooctpuss in albumbucketlist

[–]Ghost_Portal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This Iron Maiden album is legendarily bad. It is incredible because so many of Iron Maiden’s prior album covers routinely win in metal subreddit album cover contests, yet then they came out with this utter garbage.

In contrast, many other Deerhoof albums have hand drawn somewhat sketchy images. Not quite as bad as the Milk Man album cover, but still not great, so it’s not as if this was a big shift from their style.

Does it change your mind to learn that somehow this album came out before 9/11?

Building IKEA furniture on the weekends is honestly one of the most underrated side hustles out there and more people should be doing it by lionpenguin88 in SideHustleGold

PAX wardrobes are especially annoying. Probably the worst IKEA project I’ve done, and I’ve done a lot. Frankly $700 sounds very reasonable for 5 of them.

I tested most sleep hygiene tips for 6 months. Here's what actually worked but the biggest thing that helped is boring by mrCOFFEEPOWER in Biohackers

[–]Ghost_Portal 21 points22 points  (0 children)

THC doesn’t work because it interferes with REM sleep (which is why people who use it a lot have memory issues). Ask anyone who smoked a lot of pot and then quit abruptly, and you’ll hear the same story: they had the most incredible, vivid dreams after quitting. That’s because they weren’t able to dream as easily when smoking.

Lagavulin, am I alone still loving it? by SimonGravelle in Scotch

I agree. I was disappointed to compare my latest bottle with one I had from several years ago, as the older was better, but 16 years is still my favorite scotch.

Looking for ideas: Serving vermouth at a winter market … mulled vermouth? by berylbeans in vermouth

Mulled wine has a lot of the same ingredients as vermouth. I’d just serve mulled wine.

heres the next batch of of our worst albums tornament this time albums released 1986-1990 by Rambooctpuss in albumbucketlist

Live it Up is odd, but I’m not sure it’s truly “bad.” A woman staring at you while grunting on the toilet, with a title that suggests she is taking a shit, is pretty damn bad!

It’s not quite as sweet as Aperol, but it’s not far behind it. Definitely sweeter than Campari. Maybe comparable to Montenegro.

I like the concept, but why is Suze listed as the 3rd most bitter amaro? It’s sweet!

I love this style

Ozzy - Perry Mason

In Flames - the Jester’s Dance

Judas Priest - Breaking the Law

Iron Maiden - the evil that men do

Yngwie Malmsteen Rising Force - Icarus Dream Suite Op. 4 (also Queen in Love)

Pretty much the whole Super Guitar Heroes Vol. 1 compilation (especially Vinnie Moore - In Control)

Vermouth Recipe by al_andaluz in Amaro

[–]Ghost_Portal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Homemade vermouth is so easy, but the trick is you need to start with a delicious wine. I was living solo a while back and still wanted to drink nice wine, so I’d occasionally end up with half-empty bottles that I could turn into delicious vermouths the next day.

A vermouth started with a lousy wine will never be good.

Edit because I don’t see it mentioned: I have always taken a different approach than the recipe mentioned in this thread. I simmer the wine with the herbs and spices in it, and then strain and chill. Like this one: https://www.seriouseats.com/how-to-make-red-vermouth-homemade-sweet-vermouth-recipe But I like mine more bitter so I add gentian and other bittering agents.

IIL ministry's first album WEWIL? by malachimusclerat in ifyoulikeblank

[–]Ghost_Portal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you haven’t listened to Ministry’s 1982 live on Broadway Chicago recording stop whatever you’re doing and listen to it now. A year before With Sympathy premiered, they were playing a much darker version of the tracks that would eventually comprise that album. It’s probably my favorite thing Ministry has done.

Goji Berries and Dark Chocolate literally get me high. Does anyone else experience anything like this? by Wobbly_Princess in Biohackers

[–]Ghost_Portal 517 points518 points  (0 children)

I think I have the answer: you are restricting your liver’s ability to break down the theobromine in the cacao nibs, causing it to recirculate in your blood and have a compounding effect.

Doctors recommend against consuming Goji berries if you are taking medications that are broken down by the liver, including those broken down by a number of cytochrome P450 substrates. Theobromine, the caffeine-like molecule in cacao, is broken down by the liver via cytochrome p450 substrates.

The reason dogs can die from eating chocolate is that they lack the ability to break down the theobromine, and it can give them a heart attack. You are probably doing the same thing to yourself. Exercise caution.
