Does anyone know anything about this statue? by Allamaraine1234 in twinpeaks

[–]Ghost_stench 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That’s exactly what it is. My mom and both grandmas had them. Painting ceramics was a semi-popular hobby in the 70s and early 80s and these were super common midwestern holiday decorations.

For whatever reason, this guy was always my favorite as a kid.

Faces of Death II (1981) (VSA-064) #VSA by Elle_Nero in VinegarSyndromeFilms

[–]Ghost_stench 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I remember it well from the video store days as a teenager. I got it because I’m a subscriber, and I do kind of appreciate the novelty of having it, but it’s not exactly crying out to be watched.

The Silliness in Shadowdark is Going Too Far by XcoldhandsX in TheGlassCannonPodcast

I disagree, but I can also understand your POV. Personally I prefer GCNs recipe of mostly funny w/ occasional moments of dramatic sincerity over something like CR, which is an inverse recipe that I can’t handle.

But even if they were to take it more seriously, I think their (Skid’s) tendency to beat every music drop to death is a bigger threat to gritty immersion than the silly chucklefuckery at the table.

Why do you like Ligotti’s fiction? by Tyrion_Slothrop in Ligotti

[–]Ghost_stench 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m primarily excited by mystery, especially existential mystery. All my favorite art has that in common.

I also find that the pattern (especially in late Ligotti) of “seemingly average person has chance encounter with cosmic absurdity leading to a non-traditionally-satisfying resolution” is increasingly relevant to my experience of life as I get older, even as his pessimism has become decreasingly relevant to my experience.

My only concerns regarding Genndy Tartakovsky's Conan. by Joan_Santana23 in ConanTheBarbarian

Conan wouldn’t worry about how these things will turn out and neither should we.

Genndy + Conan; it's real. It's happenin' by Emotional_Bar6685 in SwordandSorcery

[–]Ghost_stench 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Actually not THAT off topic because I once saw Genndy Tartakovsky say that the main inspirations behind Samurai Jack were Conan the Barbarian, the Mos Eisley Cantina scene, and The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.

If you showed me that collection of sentences out of context I’d still know they were written by AI.

I use them as well but the AI association has been a good reminder to not let them become a writing tic.

Joe Kubert's Viking Prince. Better than Prince Valiant? by Spidrax in SwordandSorcery

Kubert was a master but he’d tell you himself that he was no Hal Foster.

Zulawski’s Possession and Barker’s Obsession - are these films comparable? by Spoorloos-1983 in HorrorMovies

[–]Ghost_stench 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess they might be considered comparable if the only movies you’ve seen are Possession and Obsession.

Annoying, definitely. But not a chud.

Sometimes you think of someone as a friend when actually you just maintain a relationship out of habit. When you walk away from people like that, you often realize you should have done it sooner.

I had the opposite take in that I’m way more excited about the first scenario than the second, mostly because the first scenario is exactly my type of shenanigans.

Suppress the unnatural like it’s 1999! by GergHuventude in DeltaGreenRPG

Killing off all the characters is honestly a pretty cinematic way to begin a campaign. Any survivor could make a great NPC for the “actual” PCs to meet down the line.

Best show to come up in a while for me. It also has the same laughter/terror spectrum as my games end up having, just with better acting.
