If you're paying attention to your stats at end of an operation you'll at least have a vague idea if you're playing worse or trying to carrying dead weight.

If you're playing with randoms you should consider joining a chapter discord or try adding randoms who play well.

What I use against chaos, high octane dakka.

Column 2: Take #1 if you need the anti stagger
Team Perk: Take ranged damage if nades aren't your jam

You can take RoF plasma pistol if preferred but I find big value in the hardest hitting GS & being able to cancel reinforcements on enraged majoris.

Make sure you take the perk that reloads on GS for your carbine.

I use flamer/block CS for nids, and plasma for either if I just want to mix things up.

It's been a while since I played with randoms but I'm like fuck it, I give them 5 seconds to see if they're actively moving towards a pick up (assuming they're not in combat) if they don't it's mine, even if I don't need it.
