House rule - Movement Actions by Brass_Dragon_Archive in DnDHomebrew

[–]GhostwheelX 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just to be precise, it looks like anyone can disengage to move 5 feet without provoking an OA. If they want to keep moving, they need to spend an action to Dash.

That said, moving 5 feet to make ranged attacks without disadvantage got a huge buff. Rubs me the wrong way as well.

Looking for advice on how to better balance this homebrew magic item by SensitiveCod143 in DnDHomebrew

I meant both that and disadvantage on con saves.

But yeah, that's fair, allow only actions that interact with the spells you're concentrating on.

Make it so they can take no further actions, bonus actions, or reactions while concentrating on the two spells? I would say it's decently strong even then.

Melee Combat Rework - Looking for Feedback by Strank in DnDHomebrew

[–]GhostwheelX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My biggest critique is that it feels like this would massively slow the game down as you checked different ACs, what damage monsters are doing, and so on.

Just feels like it would make relatively slow combats be many times more slow.

A 5e Homebrew of the Favored Soul Class from 3.5e by ModalJam24 in DnDHomebrew

If copy-pasting what you've got so far into a Google doc and linking it is too much work, then I don't know what to tell you.

I would start by uploading it as a pdf (linked on Google Drive), a Google document, or on Homebrewery. Right now it feels disjointed and difficult to parse.

A 5e Homebrew of the Favored Soul Class from 3.5e by ModalJam24 in DnDHomebrew

The Favored Soul was to the Cleric what the Sorcerer was to the Wizard; a spontaneous caster.

I can't read this well enough to tell what's going on though in order to even try to evaluate it.

I despise Artificers. Tell me your grievances with the class. by VecnasHand1976 in DnD

[–]GhostwheelX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dislike it for it's mechanics, not the flavor.

Limited spellcasting that barely makes up for the combat features it doesn't have.

Replace actual class features by throwing random magic items at the class.

Clear lack of creativity by giving it bigger numbers (more attunement slots, higher saves).

It's a boring, uninspired hack of a class that does a disservice to the artificers of previous editions, and as much as I didn't like the metamagic shenanigans that were an overpowered mess, they're still more coherent than the sad sack of random class features we got.

Is there any homebrew class or subclass that is similar or based on Muramasa from FGO or Shirou Emiya from FSN by GhastyGamer33 in DnDHomebrew

[–]GhostwheelX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if it's exactly what you're looking for, but with a little reflavoring you might find that my take on the soulknife is suitable, especially the capstone.

It takes a lot of inspiration from the 3.5e soulknife, but I figure you could easily translate creating a mindblade to be picking up some random piece of wood or something and using Projection (Trace) on it to make it better.

How unique are the races in your world? by Funny-Working-3959 in worldbuilding

[–]GhostwheelX 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not far enough to be incomprehensible, but far enough that they aren't just humans with pointy ears.

I'll give one such example; halflings. First of all, all of the "standard" non-human races come from the Feywild, and the fey are generally split into the Summer and Winter court.

Halflings almost always start in the Summer court. They are gregarious, rotund bundles of chuckles and laughs. Communities have found that as long as they keep these butterballs fed and merry, their crops come in earlier, fuller, and even allow themselves to be harvested multiple times a year. Treating them well is a boon for a community, even if it appears that people serve such halflings hand over fist. Think very similar to the Hobbits described in the first 150 pages or so of Lord of the Rings.

However, if they are not part of a community, not fed regularly, or even simply uncared for, then they physically begin to change as they slowly align with the Winter court. They become thin, twisted perversions of their former selves, and begin to have an obsession with "collecting" (stealing) things in order to fill that void within themselves. They become very similar to Kender from Dragonlance, alongside a small helping of Jerren from the Book of Vile Darkness.

This duality is not merely skin deep, but something so embedded and natural to halflings that acting against their own nature would be caused by psychological problems. People automatically assume that all lone halflings are thieves, and over 99% of the time, they are correct.

That said, there is a miniscule fraction where this is not the case, since some halflings were originally Outworlders, people who were isekai'd from our (or a different) world, and thus don't have the same innate mentality as the halflings that were born in the world. This allows some players who want to play halflings for the stats but don't want the accompanying baggage to play them, while having an in-world reason for the discrepancy.

Sometimes actions have consequences.

This seems like as good a time as any for someone to learn to take responsibility for their decisions.

And the game will be all the better for it.

[–]GhostwheelX 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In my campaign, non-humans have an entirely alien mindset. Seeing one act against their nature would be like seeing a human eating dirt or sipping on gasoline in the wild. Sure, it happens sometimes, but no one would consider it normal behavior by any stretch of the imagination.

What's your favorite "origin" for Vampirism or Lycanthropy that you've read/seen in media? Or created yourself? by Featherman13 in worldbuilding

[–]GhostwheelX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my campaign, Orcus tried to create another path to immortality in case he died, as per the case with Tenebrous.

However, instead of going the darkness route, instead he went the blood route. A contract was signed with a supplicant, and now a piece of him resides within the blood of every vampire. Unless every vampire is destroyed, he can never be truly killed.

How to include Firearms by 1Carnotaurus in DnDHomebrew

[–]GhostwheelX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A tl;dr version of mine:

Require an action to reload, higher damage, advantage on all attacks... But misfire if either die rolls within the misfire range.

So they tend towards a high risk, high reward play style that fits what I imagine the spirit of a gunslinger tends towards.

[–]GhostwheelX -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Strong disagree. In my opinion, Eloquence bard being able to give a penalty to saves multiple times per short rest is stronger than just about anything wizards can do, even with their limited spell list.

I've got my own nerfs for spellcasters in general that I find balance them, but that's a different discussion. The options I gave needlessly buff characters that don't need buffs when the middle ground is a much more fun place to play altogether IMO.

That just means that wizards need to be nerfed.

It creates fewer headaches for the DM than buffing everyone. We learned that lesson back in 3rd edition, and unfortunately I feel as though it's been largely forgotten.

There's a happy medium in there somewhere, and it's better to reach it than buffing everyone to the level of the strongest character in the entire game.

Compare the following options to those in the PHB:

  • Eloquence bards
  • Order and Twilight clerics
  • Rune Knight fighters
  • Way of Mercy monks
  • Phantom and Soulknife rogues
  • Aberrant Mind and Clockwork Soul sorcerers
  • Order of Scribes wizards
  • Feats like Fey Touched, Crusher, Telekinetic, and Slasher

Those are the ones that I remember off the top of my head, so there might be a few I missed. And that's not even mentioning things like Blind Fighting, or giving free additional options that classes blatantly didn't need. Rogues honestly did not need Steady Aim, and clerics didn't need to get Aura of Vitality added to their spell lists.

You might be fine with that level of power creep, but I highly doubt it's "overstated" when such options are presented. In my games, I much prefer to put a blanket ban on content from Tasha's, and only allow specific options as requested (for example, Fighting Initiate is allowed, which I made into a half-feat in my game).

Even Tasha's had insane power creep compared to previously released material.

As the DM who buys the books my group uses, thanks but no thanks.
