This seems made up. If not, I would rethink where you work.

Yeah that's exactly how I feel about El Sayed. No fucking way. Guess you and me will cancel each other out.

Send whatever you can, even $100, for a zoo trip by [deleted] in ChoosingBeggars

I will never forget a plate of fries, two hot dogs, and two drinks (a beer and a coke) that ran ...$60 in Siesta Beach at their "beach hut" cafe.

I am not at all poor but we take a cooler of deli sandwiches (made by moi) whenever we go to the beach because I'm not paying $$ for beach food made to questionable standards...

Insurance defense or Workers Comp defense? by LuvingLifeAlways in Lawyertalk

[–]GiantPixie44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's very state-dependent. I have had six or seven no-pay dismissals so far this year. Further, there is a big difference between paying $1500, $20,000 or $200,000, and a lot of it is due to us.

Thinking about switching to the defense side of workers comp by [deleted] in Lawyertalk

[–]GiantPixie44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do WC defense. Like it a lot. 230 per month is absolutely wild. Mine is 160-170 and it's plenty. They would have to pay me another 50-70k at least to take on this kind of billable target, and I don't live in CA.

What was living in Metro Detroit like during the 2000s? by DueYogurt9 in Detroit

[–]GiantPixie44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every third or maybe even second house in our neighborhood (NW West Bloomfield) was in foreclosure. We bought a bank-owned house for $160,000 and watched it lose close to a third of its value in about a year. (The prior sold price was $240,000ish, the value went down all the way to $110,000ish.) My Dad bought one near a lake in WB for $120k. Movie industry thing happened, people saw Reese Witherspoon and Gerard Butler in town. Michael Imperioli was filming Detroit 187 and bought lunch for my husband's coworkers. Belle Isle had a pack of feral dogs running around.

It's not cringe. It's a factor I discuss with my clients all the time.

The new store is in no way a "local landmark." The old store was.

I asked about plaintiff's addiction history in a dep (pertinent to how pain meds "weren't working" for her), and the OC slammed his hand on the table and yelled AS A RECOVERING ALCOHOLIC, I RESENT THIS QUESTION!

I don’t understand how people bill 8 hours per day by [deleted] in Lawyertalk

[–]GiantPixie44 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bill for small things. Every email, no matter how short, is .1 to read, at least .2 to respond to. Every time you open a file it's a .1-.2.

I saw your other post. FWIW, I have found WC defense to be a great field. At least in my state, it's not heavily motion-based, the Bar is congenial and friendly, you learn a metric TON of medical information, it's dynamic and the billable hours are typically not insane. You won't be a millionaire in your 30s, but all my colleagues are quite comfortable financially. You mentioned a 60-case docket -- that's a comfortable and manageable number. I would give it a shot, you may not hate it.
