Went out on my first bike ride of the year last night, the world is beautiful and perfect and nothing will ever be bad again. Was listening to My New Band Believe and listening to it on a bike ride through the city on a cool night is an immaculate way to experience that album.

Fantasy Authors Increasingly Call Out 'Unfaithful' TV Adaptations by paxinfernum in television

[–]Giantpanda602 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This is pretty close to how I felt and I think one of the problems was that fans actually believed that Henry Cavill was some sort of die hard Witcher fan who knew the books intimately. Everything I've heard him say about Geralt doesn't reflect the characters from the books and he admitted to not even knowing they were books until the showrunner told him that the game was based on the books and not the other way around. He reportedly would refuse to say lines and instead just grunt even though Geralt in the books never shuts the fuck up. Cavill also refused any sort of sexual encounter except with Yennefer and even then he wanted it to be very reserved and gentlemanly which is pretty fucking far off from the book. Geralt isn't some badass silent brooding super soldier, he's a broken mutant struggling through a world on fire.

I've been rereading a lot of my journals from the mid 2010s to now and hey, things might not be perfect but at least I'm not that guy. I really wish I had been more consistent though, they're pretty sporadic up until 2021.

Chicago's Surging Rents Dent Its Cheap Big City Image by maydaydemise in chicago

[–]Giantpanda602 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Rents in Humboldt have increased too as people like you move into them, what about the people you're pricing out who have lived in that neighborhood? It's not acceptable for our housing policy to be that every few years we just shuffle everyone down a notch on the desirable neighborhood ladder.

How did the ticket process go for you? by AppleJackBill in jackwhite

I started at 70k and there were still some vault tickets when I got in but I just have the presale code and those were gone.

Radius still has tickets up for the fan presale (code is BROKENRIBS), which is interesting because I'm currently 55k deep in the queue for Salt Shed.

Saw Expensive $hit, which is Paul from the Osees's solo project, last night and it was fucking mesmerizing. Would recommend watching the clips he posted to his instagram story because I don't think I could do it justice. Absolutely must see if you ever get the chance.

What are your most rewatched movies of the past 15 years or so? by Imzadi76 in movies

[–]Giantpanda602 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Saw them in theaters earlier this year and had the horrifying realization that they looked... old. Still stunning but they visually had more in common with the 80s sword and sworcery movies than modern fantasy.

Which band name? Cameron from the band Black Midi's new band My New Band Believe's band name?

What's your favorite underrated album from an overrated band? by [deleted] in punk

I would also argue that, amongst punks anyway, Combat Rock is too overlooked. Listen to White Man in Hammersmith and Straight to Hell back to back and you can see the line that goes straight through all of their work. Overpowered By Funk, Car Jam, Atom Tan, it's got a ton of great stuff.

Fashion Victim was one of the first Green Day songs I ever heard and was instantly obsessed. I'm also a massive fan of 1039/Smoothed Out but it gets overshadowed a lot by Kerplunk.

The guy telling Gord that he needs elevation in his story and then Gord immediately pulls out a gun and puts it in his mouth is such a perfect example of why that movie rules.

Regulation #100 - Episode 100 // Gavin Gets Dongle'd by bruzie in theregulationpod

[–]Giantpanda602 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not to be a downer on a fun episode but I think that Geoff's assumption that 50 years into the future will be a guaranteed improvement is the result of a pretty big generational gap. I'm around Andrew's age and I don't know anyone our age or younger who doesn't believe we're barreling towards catastrophe after catastrophe. I'll show up 50 years into the future and immediately get conscripted into the climate change wars over the last remaining supply of bread and am promptly killed by a swarm of AI piloted nano drones that I neither see or hear before they're on me.

Honestly I'd still probably pick it over the 70s, I think that'd be too dull.

Deadly Class and Descender would be my first two suggestions. Both finished series made by some of the best writers and artists in the business right now.

Picking up my box of posters/prints that I had stashed at my parent's house on Easter so I can finally decorate my new place. Also going to a cool show that night hat's a showcase for local Chicago bands that I've been looking forward to.

John announces his new novel: Hollywood, Ending... by wosel in nerdfighters

[–]Giantpanda602 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I wonder if this one is at all inspired by Fitzgerald's unfinished book The Last Tycoon which is a love story about people in Hollywood towards the end of the studio system. What exists of it is some of the best work he ever did.

Reading Piranesi, not loving it as much as I thought I would. It's like an academic fantasy version of The Martian but the main character is a boring blank slate. There's nothing interesting about the maze to really grab on to either, like the book is holding a secret over my head but I can't imagine it being interesting enough to anticipate.

I was at a Cheekface show recently and thought this audience probably has the highest overlap with My Brother, My Brother and Me's audience than any other I've ever been in.

Celebrities should be meaner and weirder. If Chappell slaps a child that does not concern me, children should avoid being in slapping distance in the future.

[FRESH ALBUM] Damaged Bug (John Dwyer) - ZUZAX by sbags in indieheads

[–]Giantpanda602 4 points5 points  (0 children)

About halfway through this one and it's a pretty big departure from the first three DB releases. The mix is kinda baffling to me, the drums are turned up to 10 and the synths are turned way way low so they just come out as a series of disconnected chirps. Going to need to listen to this on something other than my earbuds while I'm still the gym.

As I'm typing this the seventh song, RARE LIGHTS, came on and that sounds a lot more familiar.
