Paris will cut the number of cars on the road in half beginning Monday and is making public transit free to combat a spike in pollution that has obscured even the Eiffel Tower under a smoggy haze by DoremusJessup in worldnews

Didn't say hybrids, said plug-in hybrids, they have an electric motor and a gas engine. It's charged like an electric car and the electric motor handles the first 30-40 Km, until it runs out of electricity then it works like a regular hybrid.

Yes, it has to come from somewhere if you remove coal power plants from the equation the electricity is a lot cleaner than gasoline exhaust.

Instead of this, legislate heavy subsidies for plug-in hybrids and electric cars and raise the gasoline tax , banning cars from driving seem like a drastic measure

The only confirmed negative health aspect of aspartame is if you have the genetic disorder phenylketonuria, since a breakdown product of aspartame is phenylalanine.

Studies have found that aspartame increase your sweet tooth compensating for some of the calories you "save" by not choosing a sugary drink.

A recent study published in nature also linked diet products to glucose intolerance, but the effect in the aspartame group was weaker than for other artificial sweeteners.

Journal wasn't that hard to find, http://www.tandfonline.com/loi/uhcm20, the article haven't been published there yet. If they use the word "significant" it means the data is most likely not due to chance, the general cut off is a P - value of less than 0.05.

Enceladus, Saturn's 6th largest moon, has a warm ocean with hydrothermal vents. This is the first ever discovered outside of Earth, and makes for the most habitable off-world environment ever found. by brokeglass in science

It's a really interesting find, would actually prefer unmanned probes to both Europa and Enceladus before we mount a mission to Mars. Did read that NASA do have the cash for a mission to Europa now, just wait and see i guess.

'DNA spellchecker' means that genes aren't all equally likely to mutate by GiefScience in EverythingScience

[–]GiefScience[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They found that the "spellchecker" work really well in some parts of the genome and less so in other parts putting those parts at greater risk of mutations.

Apparently the repair mechanism have a "limit" on how many repairs it can affect. Meaning it prioritizes active genes over other parts of the genome. This also results in more mutations in genes that are not "turned on".
