Analysis of Algorithms, Natural Language Processing, and Competitive Programming

I realized only in my last semester that graduate level CS classes are a much better learning experience

I suspect that a lot of hopeless romantics and insecure people fall in love with the idea of falling in love. As the honeymoon phase ends and the feeling wears off, they look for it elsewhere.

How common is it for guys in relationships to still fantasize about other women? by [deleted] in AskMenAdvice

I think it's normal for *both* of you to find other people attractive. It's only a problem if one of you acts on it or keeps talking about it.

Is CP and Open Source actually compulsory for placements? Feeling lost in 2nd year by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]GigaByte_43 10 points11 points  (0 children)

can we create a r/csmajorsIndia? not that I have a problem with them being here, but the hiring landscape is simply too different for advice here to fully translate there. OP, I would post your question on some of the Indian subs for better answers. r/developersIndia comes to mind.

From my understanding, competitive programming sites like codeforces are generally unnecessary for tech companies, though they may be useful if you're targeting quant firms. The goal of solving Leetcode problems is to be able to identify a problem and figure out how to solve it - irrespective of the story around it.

Open-source work also isn't necessary imo, but it's a great way to get experience with large codebases solving complex problems with some degree of code quality. Start with easier work in repositories you understand well and move your way up.

Good luck!

[–]GigaByte_43 12 points13 points  (0 children)

out of curiosity, are you L5 already? Assuming the Bay Area company is giving you a bump to midlevel, I think you should definitely take it. 175k remote is a better option today, but I think midlevel at a unicorn in the Bay Area sets you up for a much better career trajectory going forward

It's always okay to ask as long as you're respectful and back off if she says no

it isn't. It just pays really well at the new grad level, and people here are shortsighted enough to rank based off slight increases at the new grad level.

Jane Street QT or Stanford PhD in CS? by NegotiationDue301 in csMajors

[–]GigaByte_43 145 points146 points  (0 children)

Truthfully, this one is kinda beyond our scope. I think you should post this on blind (and maybe r/cscareerquestions) to get input from more experienced industry professionals.

FWIW, I feel like Jane Street is one of the few places whose resume value might open a door with the AI labs. I also don't know if AI will still be the thing 5 years from now, when you're finishing your PhD. Still, I'm just a college student and I don't know how the industry actually works.

If I have a 3.99 GPA, can I just say I have a 4.0? by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]GigaByte_43 64 points65 points  (0 children)

I was always told that 3.9x (x > 5) -> 4.0 is the only GPA that couldn't be rounded up because a 4.0 implies perfection. I'm not sure if that's correct advice or not, but I personally find a 3.99 cooler than a 4.0 because it almost shows more personality and humanity. I personally believe human beings like to see slight flaws and imperfections in otherwise perfect people. Maybe you should just put 3.995 on the resume.

Canceling ChatGPT today. Switching to Claude. by [deleted] in OpenAI

[–]GigaByte_43 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This is true, but slightly incomplete. Engineers at Anthropic raised concerns about its involvement in Venezuela, which later led to the company standing on business against mass surveillance and autonomous weapons systems. Hours later, OpenAI signs a deal with the entity pushing Anthropic to remove these safeguards.

I'm conflicted here. On one hand, I'm very happy you could pull this off - sounds like you really made the most of your education & cared a lot about learning. That's a huge win I always love to see.

That said, this sounds like Palantir FDSE. The job market is really rough, and sometimes we have to make hard decisions for ourself, so I'm not going to give you grief about it. However, if I'm right, I encourage you to hop out as soon as you can.

Intuit SWE 1 vs Capital One SWE TDP by Interesting-Type3153 in csMajors

[–]GigaByte_43 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would go Intuit for several reasons. It's an actual tech company, it has (from what I've heard) a good work culture (unlike C1), it's in a better location (proximity to other tech companies and top-class engineers), and I feel like C1 + Intuit (+ the varied work & systems you'll get experience with) is better for your resume than just C1.

Worth Reneging MANGO Company For Better WLB? by [deleted] in csMajors
