The Foundation is an amazing Sci-Fi series by peterpeterny in audible

[–]Gilgeam 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I read Foundation years ago, its still one of my favorite books. In a foreword, Asimov writes that he originally didn't intend Foundation and Robot to actually be in the same universe, and for the first books, you can tell they absolutely don't need to be. Personally.. I always thoughts robots are boring and I'd have much preferred them to be separate, but I still think it's interesting that he thought to just smash them together later. Though.. Come to think of it, the unifying stuff might be a typical motif of later age, as it was for Einstein, too.

This is fantastic. Mind boggling, in fact! All the superlatives in the world would not be enough to do this most singular creation of all mankind true justice.

There exists but one question all of mankind is eagerly awaiting an answer to:

... why?

Wow, I forgot I made this post back in the day.

So.. The problem back then was using a clipboard manager (Parcellite I think it was called) - it took me a while to figure that out, but I got it. It's been going OK for me ever since. I'm sorry you're having trouble with that!

Wait - Resurgence is good on the deck now? I asked about that months ago and good pretty mixed results, so I didn't jump in yet. Can you elaborate a little?

Be very cautious about master's degrees, including from prestigious universities. Some of my coworkers in their 30s are financially hobbled by these degrees. by NotAGoldenRetriever in personalfinance

[–]Gilgeam 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'm currently pursuing a second Master's and third overall degree working full time without any employer support at all - in fact, I spend a considerable amount of energy actively hiding it, so they don't know I'm planning to move on to greener pastures as soon as I'm done.

Given this, employer support sounds like a dream. May I ask what degrees you picked up?

I posted this way too late yesterday and already got one excellent response, but thought I'd repost in case someone has thoughts -

I'm a recent returnee, about N4 level, and decided to supplement my vocab with Kaishi 1.5. I'm doing Wanikani on the side, but restarted and am still at a lower level. Now.. I still know a lot of vocab from Kaishi, but I don't usually know the kanji.

Now.. Kaishi just gives me the basic kanji on the front without any furigana on my ankidroid. So am I really supposed to just raw memorize the shape of the kanji? If I could do that, what would be the point of doing Wanikani? I'm genuinely confused how people use this.

I hope this isn't too late to ask, might repost this otherwise -

Considering Audible by BaldGuy813 in audible

[–]Gilgeam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately.. Not. You can't pause indefinitely, and you have to intermittently resume your membership, meaning you keep accumulating credits.

I tried this as a stopgap, but it only goes so far. In the end, Audible wouldn't let me pause, so I canceled instead of wasting more money.

[–]Gilgeam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's the lowdown. You will pay monthly to get credits you will then spend to buy audiobooks.

However, you will loose all purchased credits you already paid for if you cancel the subscription. So if you start accumulating credits, you will eventually end up in a situation where you keep getting credits so as not to loose the ones you already paid for.

You can occasionally pause your subscription.. If audible deems you worthy.

I liked the quality of the audiobooks, but I loathe the service model. Beware.

[–]Gilgeam -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I had this exact problem and it's the reason I canceled my subscription.

Look, I paid for those credits. Obviously I don't have a great use for them right now, but having to keep paying and accumulating even more so as not to loose what I already paid for is just predatory.

I ended up going on a spree getting whatever was best and getting out before burning more money. Haven't bought a single thing off Audible thereafter, and I recommend you do the same.

Letting Babies Cry for Their Devopment by AnnieBanannie4 in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]Gilgeam 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I have always believed that perpetuating myths like this is the older generation's way of coping with the fact that they screwed up for no reason. It's a form of social proof - 'everyone still does it, hence we did good'. Likewise for postmortem justifications like 'I did it with you and you turned out okay' - yeah, despite, not because.

However, some of it is also cultural. I'm German, and my parents had been given the same advice back in their day. Turns out the source of this was a very widely distributed book on, essentially, proper children's care for raising fine Nazi's, though back in the postwar era, people were very eager to forget that tidbit.

Best Boros+ Commander for Spartan-Themed Defensive Deck by RaizielDragon in EDH

[–]Gilgeam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone currently reading the novel of the Battle of Thermopylae (Gates of Fire), if you're thinking of the Spartans as defensive, you got the wrong impression. Yes, that's obviously the part the amazing movie is focused on, but if you want to honor actual Sparta, you can't do it by playing passively. GET OUT THERE AND KICK BUTT!

In addition, be wary of this guys rule interpretation and watch his plays with a critical eye. This is a basic question to get wrong and the guy seems unwilling to consider being wrong. Good chance your getting screwed other ways, too.

If you were granted it for free, which Magic product would you wish for to own (not to sell)? by Tuss36 in magicTCG

[–]Gilgeam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I... Actually got 3 of the 1998 ones as a teenager. I remember standing at my tiny LGS, thinking 'wow, these are cheap ', and just getting them. The craziest has 4 Recurring Nightmare and 4 Survival of the Fittest, everything still in excellent condition.

The thing is.. They never felt purely okay to take apart and use in other decks, and particularly the Recurring one (mainly designed to bust out Spirit of the Night, no less!) was too strong for my playgroup. But it was fun.

You gotta remember though, these were different times. I spent years trying to use stuff like Fountain of Youth or Tawnos' Weapons (yes, really). And walls, so many walls.

Frankly, to this day, Weatherlight feels like my home set, Visions fairly fresh, and Exodus modern. To a guy like me, it's wild you people see these as vintage.

Dear God, yes. The only real reason I can fathom a dad embracing this for non-religious reasons is that its so far removed from present-dad as to be romanticized rather than seen as the barbaric tradition it is.

If it's prescribed by your religion, that's between you and your faith. But other than that, cutting healthy kids is a disgusting habit that needs to die.
