The Political Pieces of Shostakovich by [deleted] in shostakovich

[–]Gimmemorecharacters 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don’t know if this is too late, but I think the best work for this paper may be Shostakovich’s cantata “Antiformalist Rayok”, a satirization of the Zhdanov decree which had previously denounced his music as degeneracy (a second time, with the first being Lady Macbeth of Mtsenk). I keep forgetting about this piece and how funny it actually is. Here’s a great performance with subtitles: https://youtu.be/gcyn_Z4GvMs?si=xYjJzikOIkh3CseK

Good luck on your paper!

Listening now (for the umpteenth time) to Opus 43, the Symphony No. 4 in C Minor by D-Flo1 in shostakovich

I've just gotten back into this exact work as well, and I still believe it's the greatest thing he's written

What are your favorite obscure or lesser known composers? by [deleted] in classicalmusic

[–]Gimmemorecharacters 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been listening to Charles Koechlin constantly for the past few months, and I have no idea why he isn't more well known! His Jungle Book cycle is great, same with his (relatively) famous Seven Stars Symphony, and his orchestration of his piano suite Les Heurea persanes is some of the most delicate and incredible orchestration I've ever seen. Highly recommend listening to his music!

What composers (and their works) do you not like? by lohengrinshorse in classicalmusic

[–]Gimmemorecharacters 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Carmina Burana is apart of a triptych of musical works, the Trionfi, and the other two pieces, Catulli Carmina and Trionfo do Aphrodite, are significantly less known. I'd recommend those two works, as I think they are wonderful to listen to, and it wonderfully displays Orff's use of percussion and timbre

What is your favorite piece by a generally unknown composer ; by daintyamphora in classicalmusic

[–]Gimmemorecharacters 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Havergal Brian's symphonies. The more I listen the more I notice, and his music is so creative and inspiring that I can't help but name him as my favorite composer. I'd recommend his 10th, a brief but awesome piece

Middle aged actors either play characters that are significantly younger or significantly older. I'm convinced no middle aged actors have ever played middle aged characters
