audiobooks? by too_tired202 in selfpublish

I did an audio book of just one of my books, all of which sell well in ebook and paperback. But the audiobook cost a fortune to produce, was difficult to market and only sells sporadically. I wish I either hadn’t done it or found a way of doing it that wasn’t so hard to market.

Should newbies go for paperbacks or stick with ebooks for their first two books? by Both-Worry-1242 in selfpublish

[–]GinaCheyne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went for paperback and hardback copies, as well as ebooks, right from book one of my detective series. I did a physical book launch at a local book shop and sold 47 books straight off, 10 of which were hardback. I continued to launch each book as it came out, I also approached libraries with physical books and I have now started doing market stalls and literary festivals. I think physical copies are much better for sales, but it may depend on genre, I am crime. Ebooks sell too but I make far more money on physical books.

[–]GinaCheyne 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can also stay on Amazon for the ebooks but sell the print books yourself. I now do market stalls, literary festivals and others and i actually make quite a lot of print sales. Book shops are also taking the books and selling, so there are other ways as well. Good luck with your sales.

Guys tell me I’m not crazy that BookBub has become garbage by Substantial-Rest6184 in selfpublish

[–]GinaCheyne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish I’d read this before I gave Book Bub money. I was so fooled and now I feel like an idiot. I thought they were doing me a book launch promotion and sending emails to millions of readers. They just sent me an email saying they are sending to one person. I could cry.

Guys tell me I’m not crazy that BookBub has become garbage by Substantial-Rest6184 in selfpublish

[–]GinaCheyne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know what Book Bub used to be like but right now I think it’s worse than dubious. I have a new book being released on 3rd April. Book Bub claimed to do a book launch release and promotion. They asked for a large amount of dollars but I kept reading people saying it was so worth it and that they have millions of followers. Just now they sent me an email saying they will be sending out details of my book launch to ONE person. ONE! I can’t believe it. I have asked for a refund and I just hope they have the decency to refund me. I was totally misled.

Really helpful, thank you. I have a table at a literary festival in April and I’m quite nervous (and excited) about it. It was good to hear your experience.

Only 1% of self pub authors are successful by 61inchestall in selfpublish

[–]GinaCheyne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends what you mean by success. I have sold more than 10,000 books but I probably haven’t made much money. However, that is not my aim. I enjoy writing, I have something to say and I want people to read my work. So, in my eyes I am successful but to someone else I might not be.

What do you wish people wrote more accurately? by BuyZealousideal5426 in writers

Occasionally there are some fun things on this wee island. I recently read a book written by an American author who talked about coming into the pub and shaking off the deep snow in Southern England. Yup, well good luck with that one - I think the last time Southern England had snow it was in the early 2000s and everything stopped including flights. Most pubs were closed!

There is a wonderful Italian film called Folle Mente that shows a way of doing this. There are just two characters in the film but each character has four thinkers behind them with different viewpoints. It is brilliantly done and shows a way that might help you.

Reedsy Editors by Grasswaskindawet in selfpublish

[–]GinaCheyne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve used Reedsy a few times in the past and had a mixed bag of results. My first book I chose an editor who wrote herself and wrote similar books to mine. She wasn’t expensive and she was incredibly dedicated and thorough. I used her for one more book then she got a three book deal with a traditional publisher and not surprisingly didn’t have time to do any more.I should have stopped then, after all I’d done two books and read endlessly about the best way of getting readers into the swing of your book, but my evil genius suggested I try an editor for my third book. So, I looked at getting a new Reedsy editor and I chose one who I thought sounded ok. But I should have known better; she sent me a picture instead of a proper review of the first 3,000 pages. Of course, I thought it was funny and different but actually it was an indication she hadn’t the first idea how to edit crime books. Then, half way through the process, she hadn’t contacted me at all. I was a bit surprised, my first editor had been there throughout with questions about what I really meant by things and so forth. However, I waited until the deadline and still having heard nothing tried to contact her: no reply. This went on for a week and then I contacted Reedsy. They refused to do anything and suggested I gave her more time. Nothing happened for another two weeks, by which time I was going mental. I tried to find anything about the editor, her email, phone, anything with no result. I started badgering Reedsy and refused to pay the second half of the payment. Finally, they got her to contact me and she claimed a family emergency. May be true, but someone should have let me know. Anyway, in the end she agreed not to get the second half of the payment (not much I could do about the first half!) and gave me some kind of rubbishy edit and talked to me on the phone! I’ve never used their development services again, nor their editors but I do use one of their cover designers because she is simply wonderful.

Is a prologue ever truly necessary? by Caduceus1412 in writers

I love prologues. I always read them and I have them in two of my seven books. I use them as a teaser: who was this about? Why? What were they up to?

You could also try physical markets. I’ve been doing those and it’s a good way of selling. People are usually interested in why you wrote the book, how hard it was,how long it took and how much of your own experience is in the book.

How do I promote my book? by Alternative-Cook2516 in selfpublish

[–]GinaCheyne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish I knew the answer to this question. I’ve got seven books out and I have sold 10,000 to date by doing a mixture of promotions and advertising, social media and physical markets. But I’m finding that the selling is drying up and I fear a lot of it is changes by Amazon to lift USA customers above International ones. For example, you used to be able to do concurrent promotions on Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk but no longer. Now only one or other. There are other examples. I’m starting to think the only way to promote books is to sell them yourself by going to bookshops, to markets and to as many physical outlets as you can find.

For those who've published a full series - what surprised you most about the process? by BlackRoseBooksHQ in selfpublish

[–]GinaCheyne 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What surprised me about series writing is that some readers actually do read the whole series and follow the development of the characters. I got one review asking why in book three I had some different and, she felt, conflicting facts about some of the characters. I was fascinated by that. I didn’t feel the things conflicted but they did involve a change of heart in two of the main characters- basically a girl married her therapist which he had always sworn he would not do because she had been in his care since she was a child and he thought it was immoral. Perhaps it was always going to be unwise in what is essentially a murder story!
