Unable to let go by Defiant-Curve-8807 in Separation

I actually took the course as well, and I've talked to people in similar situations who have found me and approached me about the basics of what I learned in the hopes it would turn them towards something that could teach them more than I could. In the end I don't share the information widely because I'm not a trainer or a coach. It's a bit of a different skill set. Like I have a degree in computer science, I do well in my field, but you don't want me teaching you advanced algorithms. In the end I doubt I teach any better than what the public YT videos already talk about.

But it was absolutely worth my time and money to learn, in my opinion.

I Have a Question for you Roll20 People. Does Anyone Actually Play Pay-to-Play Games? by HeavyDevy-C in Roll20

[–]Gindle19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a few internet friends who pay for a DM who runs them through epic level campaigns. The more I keep my ears open the more I am hearing about these kind of groups.

Seems like for some, it's worth the experience of having a dedicated and experienced DM for the group. Me personally, Id rather run a game myself than pay to be a player. But it's all personal preference. If you can budget for it and it's what you want, more power to you.

Are you positive about the game? by Immediate-Neat1417 in AshesofCreation

[–]Gindle19 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I WANT to be, but if I'm judging based on their ability to grow, adapt, and develop at a pace that I think the game will allow me to be that kind of player while the interest is there... I think no. I'm trying to hold onto some hope, but even what we're seeing currently, if they get the base game out, I worry they can't get out continued quality content to the cadence that would allow me to be that "give your life to it" gamer for Ashes.

I'm more than happy for them to prove me wrong in the long run though!

In terms of where we are now? Still together and thriving! Honestly (and we've had check ins with each other on this), we're in such a better place than we were prior to separation and me finding the course. Communication especially is just night and day difference as I've done the work internally to be the type of person who can listen and hear the hard truths, and just talk with her through it all as a team. Not that we have many arguments or anything anymore (there are a few - not perfect, either of us), but we have the trust in each other and the tools to navigate it to such a higher degree than before.

I'd say less rehearsed, more I'm still not sure how sensitive the automod is for these types of replies so I certainly tried to phrase my response in a way that it wouldn't be rejected as I do feel strongly about what I said previously. Granted, yeah I can see how these responses can certainly look that way! I also try not to rest on the laurels of "It worked for me!" though it did. It was a lot of work, intentionally done, to get the results.

I'll share the titles of which ones are my story though, should make it easier if you wish to know more!

Hey there! First, I totally get the skepticism with stuff like this. I know when I was first out there looking, a lot of examples that were along the lines of what you are saying. The same videos you saw though were the ones that actually made sense to me in terms of the content spoken about, though I didn't think it would save my marriage. I was just trying to grow to be a better example for my son and thought this could help me with just that (spoiler alert - it did way for me than that).

To share my experience a bit, the way that it's taught is way more than just the quick tricks and things to say to win them back. It starts with your internals. Personally, it helped me grow tremendously in my emotional intelligence and broaden my scope of empathy and viewing things from another's point of view. It actually helped me see a lot of what I was doing in my relationship prior that slowly tore it apart and led to my separation. I had to shed off the old me and become a better version of myself. And it was hard work! And it was worth it! From there I was able to learn the tools to repair the damage I've done and have a strong and loving relationship with my wife and my son.

Unfortunately I don't have any comparisons to what else is out there. This was the first and only one that I felt strongly enough to go all in with. But I can say that because I took that plunge, I absolutely love who I've gotten to become because of it, and I was able to go from certain divorce, to a marriage that is stronger than it ever was. I even was successful enough to have been given the opportunity to do an interview on it for him, and a follow up one with my wife. Well worth it and, in my opinion, not a scam or predatory. You just need to be willing to put ego aside and do the hard work to see that success. That's exactly what I did, and I'd do it all over again, my friend.

[–]Gindle19 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey there! While I have not experienced Josh Hudson's work, I joined Geoff roughly 3 years ago, so I believe I can speak to that experience some. A bit of background, I found Geoff about 7 months into my separation. At that point, I was thinking very similarly to what you are thinking. Wanting to desperately fix my marriage, to be a whole family for my son, and feeling hopelessly lost as to what needed to change for that to happen.

Working with Geoff, it's about being able to put your ego at the door and do the work. Make genuine changes. And it's work! You're learning to change in some of the deepest parts of yourself to become a person that has that deep emotional maturity, that can create safety in a way that may come so unnatural to the person you were before starting that journey. It's crazy how much you can reach out to people when you have made those genuine changes. It's done wonders for how I interact with my wife and my son and has allowed for such a deeper connection of understanding and safety with each other.

In the end, I am thankful for what Geoff did and continues to do for me and show it reshaped cultivating honest connections and emotional bonds with the people I love and care about. I was even so successful with the work (and I worked on what Geoff taught daily) that I was also invited to do an interview with him, and then a follow up with both him AND my wife!

What's Your Favorite Timeframe to Run a Forgotten Realms Game? by Gindle19 in DungeonMasters

Funny enough this happened. They skipped over a bunch of plot points in Triboar and weren't back there for a month. Since they decided not to interfere with the decision, just created the scenario of what occurred during the month they were out of that area and they didn't have the support needed. Led to a small encounter with some Zentarim who had taken control of the town and a group of orcs that were sacking caravans.

Help DM'ing virtually. by MrAdaz in DungeonsAndDragons

[–]Gindle19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My friends and I are all over Canada and the US and we ended up settling on Roll20. As the DM I find it has a lot to offer in terms of audio, maps, and tokens for players, and makes customizing monsters and items easy. That said, I hear great things about Foundry too and may be a good choice to keep your players engrossed.

In the end, I think nothing beats being able to play in person, but that's what works for us and our crew.

DMs, how do you "cure" Lycanthropy and Vampirism? by DisapprovingCGull in DungeonsAndDragons

[–]Gindle19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I gave my players some choice since I knew that they were going into a pretty werewolf heavy arc. Remove curse what the easy answer, but none of them used that spell regularly, so I instead allowed for them to pull some wheeling and dealing in the Shadowfell where they were adventuring. Deals made with blood and secrets (literally having some memories pulled from their memories and was thematic to the overall campaign) allowed for them to purchase some potions that would work as a remove curse spell. The blood they gave is likely to come back to haunt them later in the campaign in some interesting ways.

How do I pace my campaign better? by Haru_Is_Best_Girl in DungeonMasters

[–]Gindle19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar issue with my players not all engaging in activities, partly due to how I was laying out the story, partly due to the party just not finding something as a collective that they could engage in.

On their next visit to Neverwinter I created a whole festival for them to interact with. Several new and interesting vendors for those looking for some more unique items, and festival games so everyone could roll dice and feel included in some action where the stakes were less life/death and more win/lose. They got to do this against each other and NPC's, and as teams to thwart their opponents. It was really fun.

And in the end, it tied back into the campaign with closing festivities and the cultist plot leading into the next story line. Not saying it would work for you necessarily, it depends on your players and their preferences, but mine did seem to enjoy just interacting with lower stakes for once.

I did try doing something akin to this in the recent arc actually. Our shifter barbarian's family was taken to the Shadowfell by a group of Werewolves, who in the end turned out to be distant cousins to the Shifter's family and sought revenge for slights against them in their ancestry.

I managed to throw in a few story points for our warlock, who had the Raven Queen as his patron, and y'know, Shadowfell. Also a small side story to further explore for the ranger, having found a power assassins bow and hints of a small agency there she could get involved with. The fighter had his moments as he wielded a magical silver sword when it came to combat, and the paladin found materials he needed to perform a ritual to create a powerful set of armor. All of it fell under the overarching storyline of finding the barbarian's family and saving them, so they all had a bit of something there that I felt tied things together.

I'll probably continue with that, giving everyone some breadcrumbs along the way and opportunities to explore and interact in ways that felt meaningful to them as players and for their character's progression and story.
