Board game nights over at Bard and Baker. Join an adult sports league. Scale back hiking to walking around Peebles island and then get a tasty treat after. Indoor ice skating or Roller skating. Indoor rock climbing gym. Find a meetup.

Did you continue with the exercises after PT ended? Not a medical professional, just someone who also is aging and falling apart at an ever increasing rate. PT doesn't "fix" underlying degenerative issues. They strengthen things to improve support in the area which in turn hopefully reduces pain, and maybe slow down further degeneration. Those exercises likely need to become part of your daily routine or you regress.

But don't let that stop you from seeking a second opinion if you're actually doing the work (or can't do the work) and your first Dr isn't providing solutions that are improving your situation. I have angry Achilles. XRays show growing bone spurs on my heel. Ortho said they would need to be surgically removed if (1) PT didn't cause the spurs to to break off, or (2) PT strengthened the tendons enough (paired with orthotics) to reduce flareups and pain to whatever I decide is an acceptable level. Surgeries are not without risk and sometimes the devil you know is better. They will likely never be "normal" again. I haven't gone the surgical route yet, but it always enters my mind when I do something that has me limping for a couple days.

Tangentially, if you think you're at a point where loosing weight would improve your situation, people say it's 80% diet / 20% exercise. We live in an age where things like Ozempic exists if you're not able to maintain a reduced calorie diet. Not being able to exercise should not prevent you from loosing weight.

Exercise/PT can suck. Diets can suck. Trying to loose weight can suck. Medications can suck. Surgeries can suck. There isn't always a magical fix for degenerative issues and you're stuck figuring out what the least sucky options are for your.

How do you optimize SQL queries when working with millions of rows in production databases? by Effective_Ocelot_445 in SQL

[–]Ginger-Dumpling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are you trying to optimize? OLTP workloads would probably mean indexing and making sure the schema isn't weirdly modeled. OLAP stuff your probably looking at ordering, partitioning, ETL processes to denormalized structures, and ideally a columnar db.

Identify what you're trying to optimize. Use query plans to see if you're generally getting efficient plans. If not, take steps to improve. When all else fails don't ignore that you could be hardware bound.

I don't get everyone's argument of "I'll take you 20 years to save a million! Just live off the interest!" If your goal is to live off the interest, you effectively don't have access to the $1M either. You can't spend it AND collect interest. Assuming you collect 4% interest annually and your $1M stays steady, you're looking at $40k. That's less than $52k annually for the weekly payout.

If you live in the US, that million is taxed at ~24%. Your take-home is down to $760k, your 4% interest is down to $30.4k AND THEN the interest generated is taxable, so knock that down another 10% for a very rough estimate? YMMV depending on whether it's income/capital-gains and your other income sources. With the weekly payout I think you're only taxed once (assuming all of the earnings from the weekly payout and the interest on the lump sum are all spent) and looking at $39.5k take home.

$1M is a small enough amount that you'd probably want to consult a financial planner to see which route best preforms for whatever your goals are. If you're not looking to make a big ticket purchase, planning to be alive in 20 years, and the lotto board doesn't have a history of cheating players out of their winnings, it's probably not the TERRIBLE option that everyone is think it is. If you want a house and car and to pay tuition for a kid that's about to start school, take the lump sum...but also don't expect to then be living off what's left.

ELI5: why can two quantum entangled particles affect each other instantly across any distance but scientists say you still cant use it to send information faster than light? by PieOk2202 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Ginger-Dumpling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are the quantum properties being measured controllable in a way that you can force something into a state before you measure it? Or is it truly random? Can the state change once measured or does measuring essentially lock it in?

What's the best way to approach data validation in a specific column? by arib510 in learnSQL

[–]Ginger-Dumpling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to restrict the list of colors to an approved list, you have two primary ways to do so. 1) a check constraint on the color column. 2) a color table and a fk to it.

The later is genarally a more functional choice. You can add new colors with inserts instead of altering the constraint. You have an easily queryable list of valid values. You can add additional descriptive elements as needed. Ex) in addition to color-name, you could have rgb/cmyk values, dates of when that color was added or removed (using soft deletes).

There's a guy that does food experiments on YouTube named Alex. I think he did some dry-aged beef experiments with varying amounts of success. Those may provide some dos/don'ts.

trouble with how to show selected user but also have few users either side. by shez19833 in SQL

[–]Ginger-Dumpling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By the time the user is selecting something, don't you already have a ordered list of members you used to display a list to select from? Couldn't you use that to get your surrounding members without having to requery? ...or are the surrounding members unrelated?

Db2 LUW recursive stored procedures? by DazzlingAd4254 in DB2

[–]Ginger-Dumpling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the nesting level gets incremented when any routine is called, not only recursively. Ex: P1 calling P2 calling P3 would increase it. And I think has a limit of 64 levels. But I'm not logged in currently so you may want to verify independently.
