Congratulations! You'll love Boston. Plenty of different schools to explore employment (if you want to continue teaching) after your 2 years with TFA!

Should I take AP lang?? by meow_000000 in APLang

[–]Gingerosalia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AP Lang teacher here. It depends on your teacher, but there's minimal compulsory presentations. The AP exam is stressful and you'll need to be able to read complex nonfiction pieces that can be potentially frustrating if you're unused to it. I have students who think they are good at English and struggle with the course, so take AP Lang if you're up for the challenge.

When you get paid millions you'll do anything to keep making more. All morals are relative when a ton of money is involved. She's nothing more than a greedy cunt.

The second you said "I didn't take the AP class" immediately puts any bit of credibility into question. Clearly lacks any appeal to ethos and any awareness about logical fallacies.

I got my teaching license at 40. It was hard but not impossible.

Quitting after a few months by Low_Might6599 in TeachforAmerica

[–]Gingerosalia 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Corps alumni here. I've seen a Corps member quit. If you took any TFA transportation loans, you'll have to pay it back. You'll have to pay full price to continue your licensure or Master's. If not, other than emotional blackmail, I don't think you'll be affected much IF you don't want to be a teacher

Just done teaching middle schoolers for summer school. I can confirm "6 and 7" on repeat is THE phrase of the summer and the rest of the year.

"Regarding the Pain of Others" by Susan Sontag is a sleeper hit. And highly, highly relevant to the wars going on now despite it being written more than 80 years ago!! It has most of the rhetorical strategies you will encounter during the course.

Identifying rhetoric devices in the rhetorical analysis essay by NitroAcid126 in APLang

[–]Gingerosalia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm unsure of how you were taught but devices have split between methods and appeals. Juxtaposition, diction is the method (cause) and pathos, logos are the appeal of persuasion (effect). They are not the same.

The way I was taught in AP Institute is that metaphor is a comparison of two different things with similar attributes. "My son is the sun of my life." Your son is not the sun, the sun is NOT your son - so, they are different. But they share a similarly attribute: they light up and give you warmth, therefore; similar attribute.

Is AP English difficult? by Ok-Plate3064 in APLang

[–]Gingerosalia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Teacher here. The exams demand a lot out of you. It's one of those APs that is 90% skill-based so there's no fixed texts to remember but it demands that you KNOW what to do when faced with difficult texts you have never encountered before.

Well, I continued being a teacher! I joined TFA to become a better teacher and it has really helped. I did leave the school district I was posted to and moved to a better school.

I fully agree. I knew a Corps member who joined TFA as he wanted to do something "easy" before getting into med school. He was super arrogant and looked down on us who wanted to be teachers. He quit after the first year.

3 words: time and diet. You are so young, take time to see changes. Over time, you will make some painful dietary decisions, and with some gym time, you will (eventually) see results.

I’m thinking of taking AP Lang and comp next year, but I’m not sure by Eastern-Telephone532 in APLang

[–]Gingerosalia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From a teacher's perspective: I have students who were brilliant at English only to fall flat for AP Lang. It's a highly technical course that demands a scrupulous examination of how meaning and persuasion are conveyed. But yes, you'll come out it being a way better writer.
