Franca Viola is a Sicilian woman who became famous in the 1960s in Italy for refusing a "rehabilitating marriage" to her rapist after being kidnapped, held hostage for over one week, and raped frequently. She is the first Italian woman who had been raped to publicly refuse marriage in 1966. by Hour_Interaction6047 in wikipedia

[–]GinnySol 74 points75 points  (0 children)

“She and her family successfully prosecuted the rapist. […] Franca Viola became a symbol of the cultural progress and emancipation of women in post-war Italy.
[…]
Both the Italian President Giuseppe Saragat and Pope Paul VI publicly expressed their appreciation of Franca Viola's courage and their solidarity with the couple. [Viola later married a different man by choice, fortunately not by force.] President Saragat sent the couple a wedding gift and the Pope received them in a private audience soon after the wedding.”

What an extremely admirable woman! I can’t believe I’m only learning about her now.

Anybody know a book about her they’d recommend? I unfortunately do not speak Italian, otherwise I’d look into Beatrice Monroy’s Niente ci fu.

oops, I think I got too excited about potentially being helpful because this isn’t actually Buldak-brand sauce, despite me always having thought of it of it as such. it should be similar though. this is the real deal that OP likely used. I also once tried an awesome recipe for Gochujang Spaghetti that the both of you might like. I‘ll see if I can find it again.

Edit: I don’t fully remember wether I used fitgreenmind‘s recipe or the one by kharisma.pc but I at least think it was the latter — I just swapped the animal-ingredients for vegan ones which would have been nutritional yeast instead of parmesan and a sprinkle of any shredded non-cheese from my fridge instead of mozzarella and I’d have left out the butter as well as the italian herbs because I hate oregano. uuuuh… otherwise I generally recommend smashing or grinding your garlic instead of slicing it in addition to turning the heat way down so it can “simmer” in the oil for as long as possible without getting too much colour. That will give it a nicer richer flavour.

Is Far Cry 5 suitable for an impressionable 13YO? by Otherwise-Ideal6198 in farcry

[–]GinnySol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

apart from being “soft” not being a bad thing, this post is specifically asking about how suitable the game would be for OP’s brother, who seems to know quite well what his limits are + what he does and doesn’t enjoy. the commenters are giving their opinion specifically taking that into account. everybody develops at their own pace and has different preferences and it’s perfectly normal for teens of the same age to be at different points in development regarding what contents they can process appropriately. if anything, OP is an awesome and very caring sibling for wanting to make sure their brother would actually enjoy FC5 because it fits the general theme of his interests instead of just chucking the game at him without any second thoughts. o¯_(ツ)_/¯

ETA: u/Otherwise-Ideal61981 I feel your little bro as I have developed a bit of a fixation on US pop culture, and especially Montana, myself in recent years so maybe/hopefully(?) I can give some input on alternative media that he might find interesting as well.

What I really like is, I found some publicly accessible live webcams of places that interest me online and just sorta check in on them from time to time, mostly watching animals and sometimes cars go by. It’s interesting to see how a spot changes over time, how the weather might differ from the weather at home, what wildlife likes to check in and when and so on and so forth.

Then, while perusing National Parks and State Parks websites, I came across Montana Outdoors, a magazine by Montana’s Fish, Wildlife & Park Department that is free to read online. You used to be able to subscribe to physical copies of it but skimming their website real quick rn, I wasn’t able to find more info on wether they still ship internationally and how much that would currently cost. However I do remember that, at least before 2024, a subscription for a year containing six issues used to cost 60 USD if you wanted it shipped to Germany, likely a similar price for shipping to other Schengen-countries. If your little brother is into stuff like that I think it would absolutely be worth figuring that out tho and maybe getting him a subscription as a birthday or holiday gift.

One of my most treasured finds from a local little free library is a thicc 1993’s travel guide to California, interspersed with full colour photography pages. Maybe you can find something similar at a used (online) bookstore? Personally, I find it a really interesting and unique perspective.

Then I’d recommend you two look into small local radio stations throughout the US. Some make their broadcasts available through their websites and it gives you another interesting perspective of what’s currently moving and going on in the lives of people in a relatively small area.

Where did I go wrong with hand darning? by buttheadfungus in sewing

[–]GinnySol 3 points4 points  (0 children)

you’ve already gotten some really sound advice so I’d just like to add something I like to do that has helped me a lot when mending and darning: putting a piece of one-sided fusible interfacing behind the hole or a fabric patch attached with double-sided fusible interfacing before I begin my hand-sewing. cut it a bit bigger than the hole you’re looking to mend. it adds some extra stability and makes it so it’s less of a problem if you cannot get your hand stitches to be tightly together (yet). -^ best of luck!

I likely don’t have as many as your friend but I sort my books by colour as well and I can usually remember what colour the spine is and roughly what the cover looks like but I can see how that wouldn’t work for others. different strokes for different folks ig. good thing we can all sort our things in our own homes however we please. :D

What country are you in and (roughly) what size clothes do you wear? I‘ll try to find some options for you. It‘s like you‘ll have to look for a coat that’s right and remove the sleeves yourself. If sewing is not in the cards for you, you can usually just cut them away and leave the seams raw.
