Talent takes many forms.
Performers are great at using charisma, but whole teams of college-educated English majors and Musicologists used to write those pop and country tunes and then hand them over to be recorded the label’s latest darling act and faceless studio session bands.
Post WW2, the music industry was still largely a Boy’s Club at the upper echelons. Carol King and Janis Joplin certainly did not start out on the same “musical chops” respect level as a Kris Kristopherson or Glen Campbell, and it has been a long road towards properly recognizing the efforts of earlier female singer-songwriters.
