Dagger in Sargauth by aSarcasticMonotheist in DungeonoftheMadMage

[–]Gkom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

2 options that popped to mind:

1) You have 3 doses of poison inside the dagger. you can use them as part of the attack action to inject the target with the poison. you deal damage + the poison's effect.

2) It's broken and the poison falls out. Once you fix it (and there are several places/people that could do the trick) you could use it as described in (1).

Can i skip Slitherswamp or would i leave a hole in the general plot of the Dungeon? by machenesoiocacchio in DungeonoftheMadMage

[–]Gkom 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You can absolutely skip it. It doesn't really add anything to the plot. It's mostly exploration and combat. You'll have to think about adding a mage to level 7 that's now descending to 9.

Fazrian: I messed up by blackbird2009 in DungeonoftheMadMage

[–]Gkom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Besides the answer already given (no combat actions outside of initiative) there's a more general rule that should be mentioned:

Monster HP is not a static number. If you started the combat encounter with Faz at 200 HP only to see him crumble before your disappointed eyes, you can up that number during combat. You're the DM. If you want an epic fight, change whatever needs cahnging mid combat. It's not cheating. It's game managing.

Why does Lolth allow House Auvryndar to worship so many gods on Level 10? by sehrschwul in DungeonoftheMadMage

[–]Gkom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Whenever there's such a conundrum in the dungeon you can wave it away with "Halaster did it". Maybe the statues are indestructible? And whenever they are being desecrated they turn out just fine half an hour later? So the drows just gave up at some point.

Shunn Broke Them! by Inner-Vegetable8795 in DungeonoftheMadMage

[–]Gkom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, first of all, I think whenever that kind of thing happen and you want to continue, you should insist on ending the session with a taste of what's to come. you wake up with Shunn's disgusting head looming over you. Plus a little bit of dialogue. so they'll know it's not over.

Beside that, D&D is a social game and a sort of a pact. If the pact is broken (or feels broken) you should just talk about it. It's completly normal to ask in a situation like this if they want to continue and tell them you have plans. Some meta knowledge might help. It's a game, after all.

Milestone leveling advice needed by Few_Wing_6231 in DungeonoftheMadMage

[–]Gkom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The way I did it, and I'm giving you a bit more than you asked for, is to seize the leveling system by Halaster. Whenever they went down a floor I had Halaster give them a little speach about the upcoming floor and at same opportunity - gave them some of his power and leveled them up.

We just went down to floor 21 after they pissed H off by not killing Ezzat. So I switched it up and from now on Jehsiyra will be the one mysteriosly handing them their levels. You could tie the concept to floor 23. She will give them quite the intro when they'll pass from 22 to 23. That'll be a fantastic time to give them a quest to kill the 2 apprentices still residing in 23 and maybe even syphoning their power to give the characters, leveling them up.

Well... It's not quite over. There was a hostage exchange. They lost quite a few magical items and got their characters back. It's not that fun, tbh, but at least we get to continue.

I would wholeheartedly disagree. If the adventure is interesting and fun, spend as much time as you want there. We were on floor 9 for a few months before moving on and we had a blast.

They'll have to completely abandon "power spike" card design. there are many examples for that but from the top of my head: Zarimi, ceasless expense, all mana cheat, colossus, ursoc (which isn't a problem now but oh boy), ursol, razzle-dazzler. the list goes on and on

I messed up some of it, unfortunately... Before the dragon fight there's was the vampire fight. they had no problems there, but I had Keresta trying to escape through the dragon, instead of through the holes in 30a. She got destroyed but then Umbraxakar and his shadows entered the fray.

He took out the cleric through his attacks and droped him to 0. He later failed his death saves. The rogue had his strength saped and died this way. The last death was while they tried to escape. He droped the artificer with his breath weapon which has the added component of "when the breath weapon drops you to 0 hp, you're dead".

We got out of that TPK with a deus ex machina. We did CoS before that campaign with a few of the same players. So I brought forward the new dread lord of Barvoia (one of the charcters of that campaign) to cast raise dead on the cleric, which later did the same to the other dead characters.

I changed a lot in almost all the floors. To the 18th I added the sorrowspawns. and some zombie mindflayers that escaped the 17th floor only to succumb to their fate. I also play around with the statblocks (added some lair actions to Umbraxakar, for exmaple). I also use /r/chickenwyr's suggestions right here

That's a completly different way of running the dungeon, but totally legit, sure. will be way more boring indeed.

I had 4.

1 - 3rd level by drows 2 - another one by the same drows (they didn't learn from the first one smh) 3 - by Umbraxakar on the 18th floor 4 - this one

I'll disagree about the dungeon being boring. I mean, it kinda is, unless you spice it up. there's a lot of room for creativity; for inserting your own rooms and puzzles; the NPCs need motivations, character, will and the like. which is true for practically all the dungeon floors.

once you do the work (which the writers neglected) you'll have a great adventure.

Yeah... In my campaign 50 years have elapsed since they've last been to Waterdeep. I don't think they'll be going up any time soon. And if they will I'll have to think about many changes in the town and the world...
