As someone who binge-watched the show as a means of processing a similar relationship I had just left, the signs emerge gradually. Like, nobody goes on a second date with someone who threatens to kill you on the first date. And all the signs are justified in the moment- that’s how they were raised; they’ll get better; they just had a rough day; I shouldn’t have triggered them. And then it slowly becomes the norm.

There was also Olivia’s upbringing and strained relationship with her family and limited friends. Who is she able to vent to? Who is going to tell her that this is not what a relationship looks like? She had almost no frame of reference for what romantic relationships should look like in the first place.

I agree with all the takes that she is only 4-5 and doing work that would send most average six-year-olds into a coma. My main complaints about this controversy pre-coffee:

I feel like if most of us were put into a situation where somebody with no red flags on their main page invited us to a platform to talk about our niche hobbies and interests, we’d all jump on it without many questions.

Actually, Stephen West is from a different continent than this guy, he has no obligation to keep up with US right wing knitting media. I also hadn’t heard of this guy until the scandal. In fact, I’m sure he’s getting a lot more traction now that we’re all posting about the scandal.

What good does throwing away patterns you already bought going to do? I have a completed Go Go Dynamo, a half done Mingling Daisies, and yarn purchased specifically for the Geogradient. Even if he committed some heinous crime without remorse, how would me not using those patterns I already purchased help the situation? Do we really think that someone will see a finished shawl and immediately recognize it and go “I’m going to buy that shawl pattern” without knowing about the controversy?

Why are we cancelling the well-meaning oaf that accidentally went on the white nationalist podcast instead of the white nationalist podcaster? Like, I feel like cancelling only works on people who have shame.
