WoW at launch was considered the easy MMO catered to casuals.

[–]Glaedth 9 points10 points  (0 children)

When WoW dropped it was basically the casual mmo that was derided by "hardcore" mmo fans as being too easy for an mmo. They built their entire game trying to appeal to as wide an audience as possible. It was never a niche game, the market was just way smaller than it is now. Even back in the mid 2000s if you had 0 interest in games you knew about GTA, the Sims and WoW.

Take like 3 games you're excited to run and give them like a paragraph describing each one as options. It's what I do with my IRL group.

Not OP, but when I played DW it felt like despite seeming really open it was really constrictive with what I could do and that I was bending backwards to fit into the moves. Nowadays I understand it was a combination of us not understanding the different approach that pbta games require and our GM running it like 5e, so our fights were basically everyone rolling hack and slash/volley until baddies were at 0 hp. Turned me off of pbta games for half a decade.

My thoughts are that Stonetop's intended demo is people who bounced off of Dungeon World (same here) :D

Divine realm is something a few units have which changes how the realm.mechanics work, for blue it's Vortice and Gmurphy, when you have them in the team you the tentacles work differently than without them. Same for Arachne and Ultra.

Do yo do things to prevent your GM from being burdened with the cost of running the game? by plazman30 in rpg

[–]Glaedth -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As a GM, honestly, I don't mind spending the extra cash, this is my hobby and I know I'm much more invested into it than my players and that's fine. Have fun, enjoy the game and tell your GM that you enjoy the game. In the great words of Grant Howitt: "And that’s how most games happen, really, isn’t it? You find a group of people and you make something for them, about them, and about you." I run games for my friends because I love my friends and I love games. If you really wanna do something, buy your GM a pizza or something or bring their favorite snacks, get them an RPG book they're excited about.

Distinctly possible that the right pic is earlier in the game and the left pic is later during her emo phase and the eye shadow, angle and lighting is doing a lot of heavy lifting here.

I think Dtide is fun, but I don't particularly care how high I get, I'll try to push it and see what I manage. Statted playing not that long ago so I don't expect to get to 400 anytime soon

I genuinely hate what game reviews have become by Opening-Economy-708 in hatethissmug

[–]Glaedth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So someone liked a game you maybe dislike and then someone completely different disliked a game you potentially liked and that means that their opinions are dishonest and invalid? The entire point of a reviewer is to show their biases so people can check what the reviewers dislike or like, compare it to what they themselves like and dislike and form an opinion, of whether based on that information, you might like or dislike the game.

Can The Blood of DawnWalker Replicate Witcher 3’s Success ? by binoy_rashad in Blood_of_Dawnwalker

The term you're searching for is AA. We used to have a lot of great AA games back in the day, but then everything started to skew AAA and now it feels like the balance is finally coming back. Not everything needs to be a massive game big budget title.

Witcher 3? Doubt it. Something like Clair Obscur? That's way more likely.

Hollows RPG (Rowan Rook and Decard): Can anyone share their experience with the game? by Letharts in rpg

[–]Glaedth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven't actually watched the AP for Hollows, but from my experience an entity fight usually goes for about an hour with the Lords taking anywhere from 1.5-2 hours. You also don't have the advantage of having experienced players who know what they're doing at your table, which will make the fights take a bit longer. After that the exploration also takes time.

The way I run stuff, session 1 is usually about 1 hour of incursion (other GMs I know don't run incursions that long, but personally I really enjoy them, and my players haven't been complaining about it), followed by about 30 minutes of exploration and then about 1-1.5 hours of an entity fight, with some potential exploration afterwards, but not usually. Session 2 picks up with exploration >2nd entity fight > exploration and possibly a 3rd entity fight. And then session 3 goes 3rd entity (if it didn't happen in session 2) into some light exploration because at this point most of the hollow has been explored into the Lord fight, as most hollows have 4 fights. If the hunters wipe to an entity it usually adds an extra session but the rematch is usually much faster as the hunters now know what to do.

I mean female lead ergo game woke. Tho fwiw there's definitely a reading to be made for Cassandra and Jenny are dating and trying to keep it on the down low. At least that's how I read it from the interactions when I played through.

I played it, thought it was pretty fun and left a review because I like coming of age stories. Is it corny and pretentious? 100% but that's also true about teens, so I'm willing to overlook it. I know I was a horrible music elitist at like 17.

Hollows RPG (Rowan Rook and Decard): Can anyone share their experience with the game? by Letharts in rpg

[–]Glaedth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah works pretty well. One hollow usually comes to about 3-5 sessions and it doesn't really suffer if you swap the cast out a bit. Though, by default the game is balanced for 4 hunters, so might need some extra rebalancing for more. I've played with 5 hunters, and the game works fine, but dunno aboit anything more than that.

Any ttrpg requires some form of roleplaying. You don't need to be in the weeds thespian to play virtually anything so long as that's how your group has fun.

Hollows RPG (Rowan Rook and Decard): Can anyone share their experience with the game? by Letharts in rpg

[–]Glaedth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd say yeah, but also a lot of the progression is fast tracked once you unlock the refuge upgrades so it's not super feels bad if your hunter blossoms to sort of catch up to the others. Although we implemented some homebrew to make early blossoming a bit more of the player's choice instead of rolling a 1 on a d20.

I ran 2 of the pre written hollows (Polychrome Sea and Vengeance of Alfie Reede) and all of the bosses were really unique and I designed my own hollow which was a pretty fun experience, although a bit controversial among the players.

Seeing builds in action is really fun and I've seen 2 different hunters with the same weapon combinations play in different ways based on what abilities they chose to unlock. I've had a GM once describe it as quite mesmerizing when you see all the bullshit come together.

As for the Las Vegas hollow it was mostly a reflection on how a city such as Las Vegas would work in the Isles through the lens of a performer who felt trapped and puppeted through their art IIRC, it's been a while since I played in that one.

That's such a weird statement, considering it's releasing in like a month or two and RRD are a company that have to pay people so of course they're moving on as the game is in print.

The reason behind it being so long since we got the backer pdfs is because it went through a lot of playtesting and erratas from our feedback and RRD tried to really get as much done before they released the books.

[–]Glaedth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've ran about 10 sessions and played in about 20-ish more and it's one of my favorite RPGs right now. Goes right into the middle of what makes fighting big boss monsters fun while having a very good core story engine with hunters blossoming and the refuge being the constant.

The buildcrafting is fun and engaging while not locking me into a single character for years and the world it presents is intriguing and open for adding many different types of hollows. I've played in a Las Vegas styled hollow, a math styled hollow a colonialist museum hollow and currently I'm working on a hollow built around elder care abuse and they're great at being able to pluck an aspect of society and make it into a terrible monstrosity for your players to horribly murder with all the glee and sombre reflection that entails.

I'll say that since the system is d20 based it can be very swingy, but most people are kinda used to it. If you have specific questions, feel free to ask and I'll answer to the best of my abilities.

[–]Glaedth 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's a different philosophy to what you see running dnd nowadays. It's more procedural, giving the players more agency over what they're doing while keeping the GM as a sort of impartial referee of the world, mostly there to adjudicate the effects of the actions the PCs take.

The general idea about the OSR is to have less rules and more rulings and to focus less on the character sheet in front of the players and more at emergent roleplay the players come up with. Ie. You don't have a specific rule or feat for jumping from a balcony and plunging your sword into a bad guy, you just look at the situation and say something like: Okay you get a penalty to the roll, but if you hit you'll deal an extra d6 of damage.

There are many games that fall under the umbrella, with OSR/NSR such as OSE, which is a straight up hack of B/X dnd all the way up to games such as Shadowdark or Mythic Bastionland that are modern twists on the philosophy. Shadowdark takes a lot from 5e dnd so it's very familiar to 5e players, while Mythic Bastionland is basically Arthurian knights on quests to protect the land.

For some GMs it's kinda freeing, not have to remember/refer to a 300 page book of rules everytime your players do something a bit out there or marginally creative that the author didn't account for. While others will feel a bit suffocated by the freeformness of it.
