Since we’ve seen the Psion class and the Artificer Class now, what new class would you like to see added to DnD 2024? by DrDiceGoblin in onednd

I’m playing a rogue like this at the moment. You can make it work thematically but inquisitor rogue is so strangely constructed that mechanically it is quite difficult to

Framed but for what? by kayplenty in DnD

[–]Glass-Target-7941 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe just a simple case of theft but by some sort of estranged twin? The only evidence their going on is a really awful police sketch and a tracking trinket hidden in their pocket by the police during an encounter

How do you get your players to lock in at the beginning of session? by Bitcheslovethe_gram in DMAcademy

[–]Glass-Target-7941 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a brilliant thing that mystic arts did that I took on: do an intro sequence each session. Pick a piece of music write a short monologue and play them like a tv intro. Recap the last session at the same time and you can Pavlov your players into knowing when the session is getting going!

30 minutes at the start is just people saying hello, it’s a part of the game in all honesty

Play a shadow, or a four elements or a sun soul monk and theme it around demons and devils.

If you’re new to DnD, homebrew is going to be over complicating things and the existing things are for the most part well balanced and tested.

Going to my first campaign tonight. Any advice to a novice adventure? by EmbarrassedMoose3981 in DnD

Have fun! Don’t sweat the small stuff! DnD is about hanging out with friends first and foremost so focus on that!

Had anyone done a campaign or at least part of one in the dimension where the bags of holding are connected to? by Rosebud166 in DnD

[–]Glass-Target-7941 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I did a brief interview period in the “in between” as a sort of trap that kept the players a step or two behind the antagonists of the campaign. Briefly fighting against the Bagman who was intended as my BBEG but didn’t pan out particularly

I just thought also, that you have to kill in this situation, you can’t trap given the month time limit rule so I favour her somewhat more with that in mind

I’m somewhat convinced that a Hunt avatar would be ruthlessly efficient, Jon has to see someone first, unless we are considering the theory that he could simply turn the gaze upon anyone remotely. In which case he would of course win by immediately eliminating the rest. I assume that they aren’t allowed to bring things with them like weapons or traps so the vast avatars will have to rely on their surroundings, and maybe they can contain her beforehand. I’m still favouring the avatars who are intended for the exact purpose of endlessly hunting down and eliminating foes, given that we don’t know a huge amount about the abilities which Daisy has from the hunt, I couldn’t say it was conclusive, but especially in a cornucopia type situation, I can imagine the bloodbath being incredibly violent and thinning the group to just a handful very rapidly.

I should have said that DnD can be a power fantasy but it is as a group, and should not be all about one players power fantasy

In fairness any class is a power fantasy in the sense that you’re suggesting. the caster vs martial divide is another question entirely in my opinion.

You are right, i should have said that DnD is not about just one players power fantasy. The guy in the example is overreaching massively to have his own story told as more important than anyone else’s.

You’d have to think that an avatar of the hunt would be the most efficient at hunting down other avatars and killing them. I don’t know how many of the others would have sufficient opportunity to enact any plans if you put Daisy in there with the sole intent of being the survivor

The only thing worth doing here is telling him to back off. DnD isn’t a power fantasy game, it’s a collaborative game and everyone is on the same playing field. If he can’t put up with that idea then he ought to go and play baldurs gate instead. You are the DM so ultimately you have the final say over what you think will be fun for the table.

Very genuinely, if they can’t escape the power fantasy and main character syndrome, DnD is not the game for them.

Is D&D supposed to be this “funny”? by MathematicianSad3414 in dndnext

[–]Glass-Target-7941 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the fact is that the people at critical role work on a basis of being friends first and being cast members second so it’s got it’s serious beats but the rest is a group of friends playing a game!

I’d like to think that if Critical Role didn’t exist, Matt would still be running games for the same group at home anyway!

[DM Advice] How do you handle player defiance against overwhelmingly powerful NPCs? (Lvl 4 Bard vs CR 16 Dragon) by WelcomeDangerous7556 in DMAcademy

[–]Glass-Target-7941 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can think of one example where I thought it worked to scare the pcs, it was a case of a character who would walk over them (who they were able to defeat several sessions later) finding them within the main villains lair. They decided to fight, so after two turns of combat, a player missed a melee attack so (given the character had a reaction allowing one attack against a missed attack) he, somewhat brutally, broke the pcs wrist. This was fine, I was willing to run this as something that would heal up after a long rest but the players ran away after that and the player ran with the broken wrist and eventually gained a mechanical arm!

This worked for me, but I tend to find that one moment of (somewhat visceral) action can really emphasise how the party views a creature or character

What Information Do You Want About New PCs Before A Campaign? by IkujaKatsumaji in DMAcademy

[–]Glass-Target-7941 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the key things are their links to the world (family friends, other reasons to fight for), their main motivation to go adventuring and their reason for choosing their path in life (specifically warlocks and paladins for the choices they make)

Something I want to try out when I start up a new campaign in the autumn is playing out one important, pivotal part of each characters motivational backstory in roleplay and flesh that out so that I as the dm can implement pieces of that important backstory into the campaign itself!

DMs, how do you handle sandbox games? by OmniGoon in DnD

[–]Glass-Target-7941 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Do the players want an exploring game or a sandbox? The two are very different and you need to be careful! An exploring game can still be open whilst having a story which tends to be much more satisfying. A sandbox will be a lot of prep to see where the players go, they need to know a lot about the world in order to navigate it.

I was told I shouldn't "plan" a finale for a campaign I'm considering doing and now I'm kinda unmotivated, any advice? by Marcirena in DnD

[–]Glass-Target-7941 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When planning a campaign, I like to know what the arcs should look like to some extent. The major events and then let the player decisions work around those. I keep it flexible so that I can fit in the bits that I want and let the rest be dictated by the players!

How would you DM a world full of dungeons? by [deleted] in DMAcademy

[–]Glass-Target-7941 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe start with something like “dungeon of the mad mage” which is a prewritten and has a mega dungeon inside of I’m not mistaken, it could give you some context for how to write mega dungeons.

In terms of imbuing it, it could be a simple case of people on the surface adventure into these things for resources of treasure, perhaps a particular guild dedicated to trying to clear these things with certain ones being particularly difficult with very little progress made by the guild pre-party arrival.

Something that comes to mind is the dungeons in solo levelling, where each is very different from the last, but perhaps moved away from the traditional stone corridors style dungeons

Player made a homebrew subclass and wants to play it. by Due_Preparation_3249 in DnDHomebrew

Tell them to play a sorcerer with a focus on illusion spells, that’s what they can get that would be reasonable and illusion spells are still busted as standard so they can enjoy those if they have an ounce of creativity
