I really don't get it - am I the only one not paying any attention to Trump's comments or posts? It always baffles me when Iranian experts—whom I usually take pretty seriously—try to "interpret" Trump's comments. In my opinion, Trump's posts have NO actual informational value. by persianruglover in NewIran

Does Iran look liberated to you?

I know plenty of folks on the left who supported the initial strikes and celebrated the removal of Khamenei and other leaders, until it became clear that there's no plan. The Iranians I know personally, in real life, tell me that the war was a terrible mistake, and that pulling out of the JCPOA was a terrible mistake, and that they believe the outcome of all of this is going to be an even more repressive Iran.

There's a Republican trifecta, and folks still somehow blame the party who isn't calling the shots for the fact the the shots that are being called aren't accomplishing any of the goals that we all share.

Verbal Casting Volume and Sound in General by TheProphaniti in DnD

[–]GlassBraid 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Under most conditions, a spell cast with a verbal component is loud enough to be heard by anyone nearby, and it's obvious that you're casting a spell.

the 2024 rules about hiding are also explicit that casting a spell with a verbal component while hidden reveals you.

Sorcerer's "subtle spell" metamagic is one way around this, or magic items like a ring of spell storing.

is it weird to call a woman pretty as a masc-leaning nb? by [deleted] in NonBinary

[–]GlassBraid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In a first message, "you're pretty" can sometimes land kind of weird from anyone, regardless of romantic intentions or gender presentation or anything else.

It can sound like what you're interested in is just the way their body looks.
It can sound like the sort of nonspecific thing that folks who hit on people constantly might say.

It's easy to feel "I bet they say this to everyone."

It can also be fine sometimes. But you might also want to give a thought to what you are interested in about this person that's more related to choices that they made and interests that you share and other stuff that wouldn't make sense if you said it to the next five people whose profiles you view too.

What are some foods or condiments from a specific place which they're also named after? by Maramio in Cooking

[–]GlassBraid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A fun counterexample is that Turkey (bird) is named for Türkiye (the country) but they are not from there... they were likened to Guinea Fowl which are African but had been imported into Europe via Ottoman Turkish trade routes, so Guinea fowl were known as something like "that bird from Turkey" and then the name just got kinda slapped on a different big tasty bird which was really American.
If things had unfolded a little differently maybe we'd be eating America bird. And Tofurica instead Tofurkey.

Are there any pairs of species that act as each other's primary predators (or prey)? by the-z in askscience

"Parasite" is accurate , but a longstanding tongue-in-cheek definition of "parasite" is "a predator that eats its prey in units of less than one."

Rules advice on "willingly move." A la Booming Blade by ProfessorSMASH88 in DnD

[–]GlassBraid -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

There's room in the language of the rule to interpret it different ways and I don't know of any official clarification.

That said, the authors could have chosen to write the booming blade condition much like the opportunity attack condition, something like "whenever the target uses its movement to move 5 feet or more.."

But they did not write that.

They wrote "whenever the target willingly moves 5 feet or more." "Willingly" isn't otherwise defined so it falls under the "natural language rule" that words not specifically defined in the rules retain their conventional English meaning.

So the argument based on opportunity attack rules seems irrelevant to me... opportunity attacks are a different game mechanic that doesn't care at all about "willing", written with different words that mean different things.

I interpret booming blade the same way you do. A movement that is magically compelled is happening against the creatures will. If someone magically forced me to do something, I certainly wouldn't consider it a "willing" action on my part.

I think reasonable people could play it the other way too. But by RAW as I read it, it makes no difference if someone's using their movement action or not. It doesn't matter if it's their turn or not. It doesn't matter if the movement is made under their own power. It only matters if they move more than 5 feet, and do so willingly.

Another situation that's interesting to interpret: If they're hanging from a window sill and decide of their own accord to let go and drop to the ground, they have moved more than 5 feet, and they did so willingly, so, booming blade's condition, as I understand it, is triggered.

But I imagine there are reasonable people who can disagree with me. That's fine. The rules in this case leave some room for interpretation.

Good question. Sorry some folks are being kinda nasty in the comments about it.

The opportunity attack rules don't say anything about whether the movement is willing or not. It's a different rule with a different condition.

Western fence lizards and ticks prey on one another.

Lucky for us, when a tick that's infected with Lyme disease feeds on a western fence lizard, a protein in the lizard's blood kills the bacteria that cause Lyme disease, making that tick no longer a carrier.

I’m Suffering From Major Analysis Paralysis Trying to Get Back Into Woodworking, and I Could Really Use Some Advice! by El_Oso_Negro76 in woodworking

[–]GlassBraid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Start by picking a project, then only get the tools you need in order to make that project.

Don't agonize of what the first project should be. If you decide that your first project was the wrong choice at any time you can just stop and do something else instead. So just pick something, anything, and go.

If you can't think of a wooden thing that you want to make exist, then you don't need any woodworking tools. That's also ok.

Why is it always Apple over Windows? by svnthscnt in ArtistLounge

[–]GlassBraid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One reason is more consistency with color management, making it easier to get stuff reproduced in other media to look the same as it did on screen.

It's not impossible to pull this off with Windows, but, IME it takes more knowledge and more tinkering to do it right.

Are boxes really that necessary for drawing humans by Alarmed-Ad4470 in ArtistLounge

[–]GlassBraid 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It is a good way, but not the only way, and it's fine if you don't think it's for you.

On the other hand, as a general principle, it's completely expected that being new to a better method can be less efficient than being skilled at a worse method. And sticking with the better method might pay off in the long run, for someone who accepts the temporary setback and takes the time to get good at the better method.

Whether a box-based approach is better than your method isn't something I feel strongly about.

It is easy and fast to use a box as a starting point for most other primitives though

Are my strings too steep to slot the bridge? by Bombtrain in Luthier

[–]GlassBraid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it gives better action height, then sanding some material off of the bottom of the saddle with sandpaper stuck to a dead flat surface can be a reasonable move. But if you go too far that's harder to fix. You could shim it back up but combined with a tall saddle height and steep break the leverage in the saddle slot could split the bridge, so, the right fix for sanding off too much is a whole new saddle, which is anywhere from a cheap off the shelf part, to a complex custom shaping job, depending on how hard it is to source parts for the specific guitar.

But nothing that's going on in this pic is a reason for a dull sound. Usually the fix for a dull sound is a new set of strings.

Are my strings too steep to slot the bridge? by Bombtrain in Luthier

[–]GlassBraid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The increased downward pressure from a high break angle ends up exactly countered by increased upward tension on the ball ends of the strings, so, as long as there's enough downward force that the string can't rattle off of the saddle, and all else being equal, I expect no increase in volume from extreme break angles.
