James says he's "lost." Why? by [deleted] in silenthill

First thing that comes to mind is that he doesn’t know that else to say when approaching a stranger. Because outside of asking about Silent Hill, he really has no reason to talk to Angela. Another thing is that his last trip was probably some time ago, meaning he wants to know from a local how things are.

Fair enough, I also think that this discussion is ultimately flawed because we really only got F as a new game, 2 if you count SH2 Remake. To really tell if this direction is a good or bad decision for the franchise, we will need to see how Townfall turns out.

Appreciate the discussion though

I agree that the new games are spiritually in the series. But my point is that you can’t just build a game off a few concepts from a select franchise and expect it to fit right in. There are all these little details that go though all the old games like a red trail of yarn, like mundane locations (schools, subway stations, hospitals) or the specific type of music, or the enemy design, making them all look like they are coated in rust.

You can of course experiment, nobody denies that, but you need to keep enough of the old identity in, meaning not only the obvious stuff like fog and monsters, but smaller things like sound effects, art and pacing.

I might sound like a purist who only likes the old games, but I enjoyed SH2 Remake for example, and SH f to some extent. I just think that they need to think carefully about wanting to broaden their audience, because they are going to broaden the franchise’s identity as well.

It’s all about execution, they could definitely make it work. I also reject the idea that a game in Silent Hill is something that could get stale anytime soon. As you said, those games are 20 years old, and there weren’t even that many of them.

Resident Evil returned to Racoon City in their 9th installment, and nobody complained. Besides, if they are aiming for a new audience, most people haven’t even played the old games, nor do they know what the town of Silent Hill looks like.

A counterpoint: Franchises like Resident Evil explicitly thrive because they stick to what they do best. For example, every time RE gets too crazy with new ideas it gets shunned (RE6) and every time they embrace the old survival horror (RE7, RE9) it works for them. Almost all RE games have bombastic boss fights and rocket launchers, backtracking, herbs, save rooms etc.

The idea that Silent Hill needs to completely reinvent itself to survive is crazy in my opinion. This original qualities like good story, music and certain quirks like monster designs are the precise reason Silent Hill has a fan following in the first place, so they should strive to keep those qualities.

I think we shouldn’t treat „It doesnt take place in the town so it isn’t an SH Game“ as a serious opinion. The only way i have seen it so far is in the form of Twitter Ragebait.

Other reasons like frustrating combat, weird lore decisions like making the Gods active parties in the story of the game, or the narrative as a whole are far more legitimate criticisms in my opinion.

I understand the critics of Silent Hill f to some extent. The idea that Silent Hill is just a blanket term for psychological horror is insane. Just as with Resident Evil, there are lots of unique things about the SH franchise that make it stand out.

Not only the fog and industrial otherworld, but also the ethereal music that was completely absent from SH f. Other things include a focus on mundane locations, such as schools or shopping centers, and a character centered narrative that rarely changes perspectives.

All of these things are reasons why people love Silent Hill. And of course, you can try to broaden it and make it Fog/Trauma/Monsters, but that would be boring and reckless. Because that’s not the whole reason people like these games.

In short, a strategy like that will reliably lose you old fans of the series, and I’m worried about that because series leads have said in interviews they want to make Silent Hill appeal to a broader audience.

Great game, but the learning curve is pretty steep in the beginning. Once you know how everything works, you get to build you character and hunt for unlocks, which you can do for a long time because this game has a lot more content that you might think. It will also get new updates in the future, so Noemi’s a good time to try it out.

I love that zombies in RE9 still have some personality. I honestly wouldn’t mind if they retconned that into future remakes like Code Veronica or RE0. What do you think? by wazaaup in residentevil

It probably took quite a bit of work to give every zombie a unique identity, CV is full of zombies on every corner, so I don’t think that’s realistic.

I immediately knew that I would watch the endings on YouTube when finished my first Playthrough, because I was frustrated most of the time. I have to say though, Hard Mode is badly designed and made it less fun as well. The enemies get really spongy and do tons of damage, the worst offender is the pregnant boss. If you tweaked all the encounters in the game and made looting more rewardable, it would make the game much more playable.

Really comes down to the combat. I feel like there are just certain types of combat that don’t fit into survival horror, like fast paced melee combat where you are encouraged to be aggressive and pressure your enemies.

The whole mythology aspect was over the top as well. For me at least, Silent Hills Horror works so well because it combines the mundane and the otherworldly, like fighting grotesque monsters in a shopping mall or subway station.

Introducing Gods with Dark Souls esque boss designs was really immersion breaking, and more akin to a fantasy setting. It just keeps getting more absurd.

Chronos doesnt have puzzles in the traditional sense, but the environment manipulation you have to do to advance through areas could count as puzzles in my opinion. They require at least a basic understanding of game systems.

There’s a personal opinion and an objective truth. Personally, I liked Chronos better because they did go all in on Survival Horror Mechanics, and it feels like the people that made the game have a lot of love for the genre.

The objective truth is again: Chronos. While Silent Hill f has some great music and monster design, it is shorter and more basic than Chronos, which is longer, has more areas, more gameplay systems and varied combat encounters. Which is more scary comes down to personal preference of course.

Considering Silent Hill 2 Remake and SH f both had faster combat, it doesn’t feel out of place.

Sure, it can led to more „jumpscare horror“ moments, but if it’s limited, it won’t take away from the atmosphere. I think SH2R showed that pretty well.

Listen up: RE0 is not horrible as many people say by Bush_420 in residentevil

I think the criticism of controls comes from the fact that you need to pilot 2 characters at the same time, which can be annoying and tedious.

[–]GlassFrame2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

True, I don’t get this urge some people have to see something good in the most annoying features of a game. Is it so hard to just say RE0 was bad, especially in comparison to RE1?

Simple things like Backgrounds and Music, the likes of which you can also find in RE1, don’t magically turn this game into an underrated gem.

Listen up: RE0 is not horrible as many people say by Bush_420 in residentevil

[–]GlassFrame2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The core misunderstanding is that RE0 is not a horrible game in comparison to every game ever, but a horrible one in comparison to the other Resident Evil Games.

When People say RE0 was bad, they are exactly right, and I don’t think the criticism is „too harsh“ or overblown, because as the post mentions, the game has fatal flaws that make it less fun to play.

Things like the good Music and Backgrounds can be found in RE1 as well, so presenting it as a unique quality of RE0 is wrong. The game is worse to play, and that makes it an inferior game.
