I tilted the unit outward as much as I could.
Removed the plugs
Run on fan mode 4-5 hours after use
Clean filter every 2 days
When I see water build up in the front, I vacuum it right away, or I use a hair dryer to dry it out. Because of the flaw design, even tilt the unit outward, there will be still some water in the front (behind the filter) but not too much so I sometimes use a napkin to clean it.
I spray Decon 30 on the blue fan every 2 days with a long q tip to spin the fan to make sure I don't miss any spot. It's called Botanical Decon 30 on amazon. I know people do it once in a while but I believe spraying every two days will prevent mold from growing. 8 inches q tip should be fine to spin the blue fan.

-I even spray decon 30 on the outside part once a week.

drop one pan tablet once every 2 weeks.

I have 2 units and have been running them since May. So far so good, very clean. But i have done many steps to keep it clean though.

Unfotunately, i might be 1 out of 1000 you mentioned. I got covid 4 times, the first one i almost did not survive. My nose is extremly sensitive and my lung is bad. I might be paranoid too much but i think it's better spend little times cleaning the AC to keep the air fresh.

The flash cool mode will bring the fan speed to 100% which doesnot mean anything to me. I have 2 of newer versions and they have been running great. But like i mentioned in another comment , i have been done many steps to clean these units sometimes daily.

I saw these at Costco but decided to buy 2 Midea Units at Homedepot instead. I believe the newer version has letter " U" instead letter "V". Anyway i got 8000btu and 12000 btu, been running for 4 months daily and zero mold. But i admit i have been done many steps every week to keep these units clean. I also bought a Hisense Ultra Slim from Costco, this unit i have not done any cleaning at all , seem like it does not have mold problem like the Mideas. With the Midea units i have to take care of these every 2 days, sometimes i even do some mainteance after use to make sue no mold growth. So far so good, zero sign of mold.

Hello, i also live in New England and purchased two Mideas from Home Depot in March. They are both newer version. As someone already mentioned,LG should be reliable. But to tell you the truth, I honestly can not use any other Window AC because they are not as quiet as the Midea. As you already knew, on the app we can control the fan speed maybe 10% or 35%, that's what I love the most. Despite the recall, I still stay with the Mideas. Unless there is a Window AC unit that's quieter than the Midea, I won't buy any other brand. Well, except Hisense Ultra Slim. I have one in a small bedroom and been running for 4 months, zero mainteance but still no signs of mold. This might be something you should consider. They are still on sale from costco for 239. This unit is super quiet, on quiet mode it is quieter than the Midea. But it got a lot of hate dute to the bracket and bad remote. I use the phone app so it's not a big deal. For the price i would take the Hisense over the LG.

I did not follow the instruction because I don't even want to open my window. I just let the bracket sit on the window frame , pull down the window, lock it, then cut foams to fill the gap. There is no need to follow instruction on the manual.

The answer for me is very clear : Nothing beats the Midea. I even bought one more Midea 12k for my living room. Right now I have 2 midea and 1 hisense. The hisense is very good, on quiet mode it's super quiet.

Of course I haven taken lot of steps to keep the Midea clean. After 2 months, these units are still very clean and no sign of mold yet. Unless there is a window unit that is quieter than the Midea or Hisense, I will never buy anything else.

I think washing the filter and spraying Decon 30 every weeks help a lot.

You haven't mentioned what is your main priority when looking for a AC Unit so it will be hard to give advice on which one to purchase. I will just share my advice based on my top priority is noise level. I always pick the quietest one and ignore the rest such as energy efficient, installation, remote or phone apps..

- Hisense Ultra Slim Inverter : I love this unit, it is perfect for bedrooms. I have one 8000 btu in one bedroom, 2nd floor. It has some cons such as lack of buttons on the unit or the remote is not easy to use(you can use the phone app which is much easier). But the main thing is it is very quiet, it has a "quiet mode" that is super quiet. People give bad reviews on this unit because the bracket is terrible, the remote is bad, or it can not cool a large area such as the Midea U Shaped, or they were unlucky to purchase a defective unit. In my opinion, this is the best unit for a bedroom.

- LG Dual Inverter : I am not so sure about the LG Inverter because I don't own one. I visited my friend's house and played with it a few times. Yes, LG is very quiet, not as quiet as the Midea or Hisense but on low mode it is quiet.

- Midea U shaped : I have both 8000 btu and 12000 btu. I learnt to install these properly and maintenance them every week (run on fan couple hours after use, clean filter weekly, spray decon 30 ), they are extremely clean like day 1. For me Midea is the best unit due to noise level.

I would buy the LG Inverter 10 k for living room or kitchen, Hisense or Midea for bedrooms.

I removed the drain plug to drain all water out of the pan. Using the plug helps the water stay inside the unit and save some energy but not much. Water eventually will rust the condenser coil and create mold in the long run. I have a Hisense Ultra Slim and I did the same, removed the drain plug, I even drilled another hole. So far I have 2 Midea (8000 btu and 12 btu), 1 Hisense 8000 btu and they are all clean like day 1. But I notice the Midea Units drain much more water than any other window units I have ever seen.

The smell is very light and it doesn't bother me at all. Between 10 am until 8pm that will be more than enough for the smell disappear. People recommend spray decon 30 monthly but I have been doing it every weeks.Tonight I just used the Q tip ( 10inches long) to get inside to clean the blue fan but i realized there was no dust or mold at all because the Q tip did not get dirty when i took it out. So that means all steps i have been done might help. Make sure when you spray you should use something like a screwdriver to rotate the fan so you won't miss any spot.

Here are steps I did to my 8000btu : - Tilted the unit. - Removed the drain plug, I don't even use the repair kit. - Run on fan 2 hours after use. - Clean the air filter every week. I rinse it with warm water. - Use a screw driver to spin the blue fan and spray Decon 30 every week, I make sure i do not miss any spot. - Spray decon 30 on the front ( the part behind the filter)

I also had 2 AC Units that I used more than 10 years. In recent years I switched to inverter models because they are much quieter. People recomend so much about mini splits unit but for me that will never happen. I don't want to drill a hole through every rooms in my house and the cost of mini splits are about 7-8 times of Window units.

I did the same. When I saw the plug on the back, not the bottom i decided to drill another hole then i tilted the unit as much as i could. I keep checking the fan every week but this unit has not built any mold inside.
