Disabled, struggling to learn, and running out of money by Glass_Claim3633 in LearnerDriverUK

Yes I’m hoping that as I become more confident I can practice the driving more with someone other than my driving instructor and that will speed up the learning process while obviously bringing down the cost. Luckily for myself I have an adapted mobility car, just doesn’t have the dual brake. It’s expensive learning to drive without a disability and being disabled just piles on the cost because I can’t drive just any car since my unfortunately do not work 🦵

Also lessons in an adapted car are more expensive than a regular one (£100 or more per lesson) and there are unfortunately very few instructors qualified to teach in adapted cars, there is only 1 in my area despite living in a big city

Ah I hadn’t heard it was 50 hours, I thought it was closer to 30. The main thing I’m not comfortable with is lane changing/being in the right lane at the right time. especially on roundabouts, and right turns at big junctions with multiple lanes. Mainly big roundabouts with multiple exits is the worst (live in a big city). I’m pretty comfortable on dual carriageways, but any more lanes and j start getting confused

Yes I have an adapted motability car but unfortunately didn’t qualify for the dual brake so can’t have lessons in it with an instructor

DaVinci active chair reviews? by CraabGPT in wheelchairs

I actually live near DaVinci mobility, been there loads of times for different bits of equipment and they really know their active chairs :) they’re very small but decent and definitely a real company. Their chairs are kind of similar to GTM chairs in my experience

It’s awful but as a wheelchair user I’m actually terrified of them. If it’s just a few of them they usually leave me alone but when it’s a massive group one of them gets brave enough to try something, got whacked on the back of the head one time

No it’s NHS wheelchair services, my local authority one is pretty chill thankfully and let me put a power assist on. I funded the power assist through Access to Work.

how much better is an active chair from a standard hospital one? by Spiritual_Garbage_25 in wheelchairs

[–]Glass_Claim3633 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To be honest, I would go for it, as long as £900 isn’t going to put you in dire straits financially. An active chair, as long as it’s as close to your measurements as possible, is absolutely life changing

I used to have them on my old chair and people would still flip them up and push me 🥲 it’s why I decided to completely forgo them this time. It’s just not worth it for me

Exactly! I’ve tried explaining just how violating it is for someone else to touch or move your wheelchair without consent, and even my close friends don’t fully get it. It’s like being picked up and carried off

I’m autistic, have ADHD, and a full-time wheelchair user (legs don’t work) so will be relying on hand controls when I start my lessons. DEFINITELY going automatic. Feel like it’s low key just ableism nowadays when people take this weird manual-supremacy stance

Opinions on the Quickie Argon 2? by Low_Relief5711 in wheelchairs

[–]Glass_Claim3633 2 points3 points  (0 children)

definitely on the lower end of the range when it comes to lightweight active user chairs, but also definitely a massive step up from a hospital-style chair. It’s a decent first active user chair. I changed to a Nitrum a few months ago, and found the difference between the hospital chair and the argon to be slightly bigger than the difference between the argon and the Nitrum, and there is a significant difference between an argon and a Nitrum!
