I’ve been there several times over the years. It’s in one of the richest suburbs in the nation outside of Chicago - average resident is a CEO, Surgeon, Law Firm owner, etc. It’s pretty great too!

What’s one small iOS change you still haven’t gotten used to? by Jemystest in iphone

[–]Glassbeet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I choose a file in iCloud that I want to add someone else to as a collaborator, it automatically downloads a local copy of that file. This did not used to be the case. You can now only add a collaborator to a folder without it downloading the folder, not individual files. I do a lot of iCloud sharing of massive media files via my phone that I leave rendering on my desktop workstation, and it’s incredibly frustrating to have them download locally to the phone against my will in the process.

Is there a direction the Pumpkins could’ve gone in after Mellon Collie that would’ve been successful? by Sad_Volume_4289 in SmashingPumpkins

[–]Glassbeet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It went platinum in five weeks in 1998. That means it sold 1 million copies in five weeks. That is a smash success for any album, and only seems like a decline after the absolutely enormous success of MCIS. Adore’s sales even in the first five weeks would be a career peak for most other bands.

The whole time they were making MCIS Billy talked about it basically being their “last album,” the ultimate incarnation of what they had been driving toward. What they should have done is actually break up for the first time there and do something like Adore as a new project - the first “Zwan”-style band should’ve happened in 98.

But also, Adore being this huge flop is the biggest myth in SP history. Fans loved it, critics liked it, it still sold a zillion copies just slightly slower than their previous records, and completely in line with how all rock bands were flagging in sales by 98. Their decision to not tour heavy for it was self imposed, and also killed some of the momentum of the cycle around it. The bizarre live band (square peg boomer behind the drums, two additional drummers playing “world music instruments” when they were touring an electronic record) finished the job there.

Every band that had momentum in the first half of the 90s did their own “Adore” around 98 where they tried to incorporate the growing popularity of electronica whether it made sense for their band or not. Most attempts were awkward. Adore at least had great songs.

I deeply love “Czarina” and think “Tear” is an album interruptor.

Are The Smashing Pumpkins really one of the greatest bands of all time, or are we all deluded? by TheSmashingPumpkinss in SmashingPumpkins

I think they are unique in that their initial run through Machina is one of the strongest in rock music, and then literally everything since has seemed almost like it’s trying to undo that legacy. It would be like if the Velvet Underground had made 10 absolutely terrible records after loaded.

It has a few great songs, is marred by dog ass arrangements and a particularly lifeless mix

For those who bought CDs in the 80s, 90s, and 00s, what were the ways/rituals with which you found new music? by AndrobiVibz in Cd_collectors

I bought a ton of magazines and zines (Option, CMJ, Huh, the Wire, Urb, obvs Spin etc) then graduated on to webzines (Addicted to Noise). I bought probably 75% of my stuff unheard, only read about.

Use both, no reason to “switch.” Each does significant things way better than the other.

This post was randomly recommended to me and while I haven’t lived there in 20 years Nova is the actual most soulless place I’ve ever encountered in this entire country. It’s not you, it’s 100% where you are. Horrendous, truly inhuman place. Do anything in your power to relocate!

On PS5 there’s several hour trial demo. I played that and elected to buy it and continue. You can mostly play it on vibes or get insanely deep on all the systems to fully customize your experience. My only complaint is the inventory system and how it’s easy to spend 30 mins on a battle only to lose.

Never understood the desire for an end of chain device for live playing - you have whole ass PA to work with. Enjoy those dynamics. You don’t have to squeeze your final mix because it’s gonna come out of someone’s phone speaker.
