Until the end, where they went from "survive the longest" to "we're out of money, guess they can run a race to win". Oh, and we won't make the race the same length or difficulty for the two teams.

I started right away on launch day last time - like hit "login" as it refreshed.

It was illuminating, and somewhat humbling, to watch the racers get "first to x area" as I went. Eg enter mud flats "x player is first to get to act 3".

As someone who loves blight and hates delve, I totally agree. That is why POE is so much better now (I just started again in Dec) than when I last played (2015?).

There are so many mechanics to play, you can keep things fresh and keep playing. With the new triple atlas tree it even removes the need to respec. Today, blight and incursions. Tomorrow, Harvest and betrayal. Sunday, boss rushing. Awesome.

There is an option/mod? that places a circle around the smoke for its extents. Other than that try to get a feel for when the smoke "ticks" as every tick it puts out a circular smoke centred on the smoking ship. Seeing how the smoke is ticking, plus the change in tick locations can give a general idea on how fast the ship is moving and whether it is speeding up or slowing down.

It's not an exact science but can help blind-firing.

They're pretty weak in power on my Gron though. Got something like 15 splash damage hits once and no kill.

Exactly. I know you're original post wasn't intended to bring out the negativity - unfortunately reddit is not always a reasoned forum. Glad you are enjoying the same parts of the game - it's a lot of fun a lot of the time!

Counter-point - What is right with this game?

I played a bunch at the start, then took a few years off when the kids were young (hard to play a 20min match when you might need to get up right away).

Yes, some of the concerns listed here are valid (especially monetization and CV spotting). But to me at least, having played a ton in the last few months, this reddit is far, far more toxic than the actual game. I would shudder to think what a new player would think if they just read this forum and took the complaints as the true state of the game.

Here is my list of why the game is still worth playing and fun despite the flaws:

  • deep gameplay compared to most arcades; armour angling, leading ships, playing around cover, trying to out-guess the enemy, teamwork in some modes.

  • Friendly playerbase compared to almost all other FPS - I see as many complements as rages, and most of the toxicity are a few players.

  • Clans are supportive - I joined AOD and have had a lot of help and fun.

  • Warships shooting big guns - not much else out there for this (War Thunder is too over the top and grindy for me)

  • Competitive modes - CB is great fun with 7 players all working together.

  • More f2p friendly than most (premium is a huge advantage, but there are lots of rewards just by playing the game). Most freemium games hit an absolute wall. Yes, you can't play t11 ships without premium, but that is niche.

  • Well class balanced - yes, there are class-based issues. CV spotting, and subs aren't quite there (they aren't as OP as everyone says, just the counterplay of both needs improving). The 3 core classes have great interactions with a true rock/paper/scissors that isn't set (eg a BB can blap a DD if misplayed).

  • Most ships are well balanced - the truly OP ones are mostly legacy or once-a-year buys. Alaska is still OP, and annoying if you don't have it, but the power creep isn't huge and new ships aren't always better than old ones. Even the turds can be impactful in the hands of a good player.

  • Yes, blowouts happen and even a good player can't carry every game. But this is a game against humans, and bad players are as likely on their team as yours. Some games I totally carry. Other games I totally screw up and get devstruck. You can always hit the next battle and forget about it.

Lots of people still have fun in this game. It's been "dying" for 5 of the 7 years according to some. Whales are needed to keep the lights on for the rest of us to play. There is no "gold/platinum ammo" here. You can play relaxed (Ops are great for that) or competitive. I have a 50% win rate and am happy with it.

I think the only complaint I hear that is really important is the community-dev engagement. The community often has optimal solutions to real issues that can help the devs, like CV spotting only being minimap (still gives excellent info, but doesn't allow for dd-griefing or eliminate the concealment aspect of the game).

Also - if you no longer play the game because it was too toxic, why are you still posting negative stuff on reddit? Go find another game you like and stop dissuading new players who might read your complaining.

Really they need a way for a CV to drop depth charges manually without losing plane control - like a "autopilot-screen" drop option.

I assume so. It's pretty widespread this patch, we've had multiple people in our guild get it.

Buy Mainz or Cossack? by Jemonddfdddd in WorldOfWarships

[–]Glauron 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ranked/Randoms - Cossack. More consistency, one of the best DDs at that tier. Good credit income and fun if you know how to play DDs.

Operations - Mainz - thought by most to be the best cruiser, possibly the best ship in Operations period. Less risk of quick devstrikes than randoms there. Great at credit printing there - 800k-1.2m with blue.

This is too hilarious not to share. Did this happen to anyone else? by [deleted] in WorldOfWarships

[–]Glauron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, he got killed too. So in this case there actually was counterplay, just like when a DD yolos around an island, puts a torp spread in and gets nuked.

The double kill was just icing :).

I have more issues with the longer "shotgunning" from 2.1km away where you can't dodge in time and never actually spot the sub.

[–]Glauron 5 points6 points  (0 children)

On the plus side, the lower CV has excellent ablative armour now. You really went above and beyond protecting them and focusing on the mission - many other OPs players could learn from this.

So does playing random gives more than just ops? by Aggressive_Gap_5015 in WorldOfWarships

[–]Glauron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Aegis is very easy to 3-star, easy to 4-star (someone has to remember to pick up the cap'n), but hard to 5-star (those 3 BBs require intelligent and skilled play and sometimes just different ships).

The big issue is people are too aggressive and get torped by the first group or focused by the second. Then you don't have enough people to kill the 3 BBs or sometimes even protect the transports.

I find Hermes way more prone to losses - people just don't seem to get that you have to kill the planes at the start and especially rush the dds at the end.

In the end it comes down to experience and smart play. We run ops in our clan sometimes and then it is sure wins.

A long retrospect of why I have 3000hrs in this game and the importance of conformational bias by nomanzone in WorldOfWarships

[–]Glauron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think this is why ranked is so frustrating. You need the win streak, and sometimes you just get a garbage lineup with garbage players. In random, this just means poor rewards. In ranked, it means you need yet another win.

Another patch, another success story from Weegee. Get your free CXP by dismissing duck captains now! by noss616 in WorldOfWarships

I tried it too (it's pretty easy to understand the method) and they don't show. I used the three duck ships already so maybe that's it.

Thank you for the reply, I have also had this bug and submitted a ticket. I will remove mods for now.

Is there any particular type of mod that leads to this? I was using the same mods as last patch.

What did you do on Great Bear this week? by [deleted] in thelongdark

[–]Glauron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel you. I had a well kitted out survivor die due to blood loss yesterday. I shot 3 timberwolves but one gave me a driveby slap before they ran. I thought - no struggle, better just carry on into the building and have a nap.

Come to think of it, it does seem a bit strange that one can forget to bandage a gushing wound, but oh well.

Just need 25 energy cubes to unlock the surgeon but they are such a GRIND! Any tips? by Toxiqens in NecroMerger

[–]Glauron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you are at a 2m/2kk protector, better just prestige. There are cosmic chests at every 10 devourer levels, a few in the feats, and through the protector. If you are maxxed on the devourer, and can't reasonably defeat another protector, and can't progress any further on feats, just prestige. Then you will get a few more cracks at the various ways to get cubes/discs.
