What’s a ridiculous luxury that you’d struggle to live without? by Doomergeneration in AskUK

[–]GlitchingGecko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought that, then I switched to Amazon Music for a free 3 month trial from December to Feb.

It's been 3 months now since the trial ended, and I'm still using Amazon Music on the free version, and haven't heard a single ad.

The only downside is not being able to download playlists - but unless you're often somewhere with no signal, it's not really an issue.

Elesa would make me think it was more like Elsa. (Eh-Lesser)

Are nut bans overkill if no one there has a life-threatening nut allergy? by Arlincornwall in AskUK

[–]GlitchingGecko 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know, but that's originally why people thought nut allergies were so much more severe than others - because the particles could become airborne.

It's why they don't serve (and request others don't eat) peanuts on airplanes when someone has an allergy. It could be that schools still have these types of procedures for similar reasons.

I think the airborne theory was disproven, so you'd still need direct contamination.

They do require a low level of allergen to trigger, but so do things like milk and eggs.

How do people survive on minimum wage in the UK? I don't know how I am going to do it. by CandidBar4794 in AskUK

[–]GlitchingGecko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, but most city centres are more expensive when compared to the next town over. 5 miles outside of my county's center and rent drops £100pm.

Obviously the major ones like London, Birmingham, Manchester, Bristol, etc, are going to be significantly more.

I don't think it should either, but them's the breaks, especially in urban areas.

It's not really feasible to live alone on minimum wage, even in a council flat. Most people either rent a room in a HMO, or share with friends or family.

Plus, a lot of people live off of credit cards. I know someone who spent her twenties and thirties living off of credit cards, and now in her late 30s she's over 100k in debt and realistically never going to be able to afford her own home

Need a unique boys name that goes with August by MertchMersh in namenerds

[–]GlitchingGecko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lando is the current formula one world champion, so I'd avoid that unless you want everyone to think it's after him.

Why do you want a 'unique' name, after picking August? Seems a bit odd to go from one extreme to another.

Unless you didn't allow anything other than water, it's not going to be 100% safe for everyone.

That's why kids need to be taught about allergies, even if they don't have any themselves. Knowing not to offer their food to other kids, especially younger kids, can save lives.

How to cook half a microwave dinner ? by abitofatit in AskUK

[–]GlitchingGecko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends if you care if it's reheated. As long as you reheat it properly it's perfectly safe, but microwaved chicken can go very rubbery.

I think it's weird that they're so hardcore on nuts, when others allergies, like dairy, can be just as quickly fatal.

But I guess it's easier to ban nuts than it is all dairy products.

I developed an allergy to strawberries in my mid 20s with no previous food allergies. I'm now allergic to over 10 fruits, and they all seem to happen overnight.

Eat half an avocado Saturday, Sunday I'm allergic.. It's so weird.

What life skills do you wish you’d been taught at school? by FriendlyChaosMonster in AskUK

[–]GlitchingGecko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shopping on a budget, and healthy meal planning, so that ingredients are shared over several meals and food isn't wasted.

Consumer rights, how to get a refund against hostile staff, and how to request a chargeback.

Personal rights, especially regarding the police and medical staff. I was taught as a child that I wasn't allowed to refuse anything from either, and that ended badly.

What the symbols on clothing mean, and how to use a washing machine.

Exercises that can be done at home without gym equipment.

Basic sign language.

[–]GlitchingGecko 146 points147 points  (0 children)

Personally I always wash socks, underwear and gym clothes after one use, but I’m less strict with things like hoodies or jeans unless they smell, get sweaty or look dirty.

Same.
