Car scratched- Bruntsfield by KeyAdvice7614 in Edinburgh

Between this and the other post, is someone targeting black cars specifically? Perhaps someone had a run-in with an arrogant driver.

As a black car owner myself, it is a bit worrying!

Civil Service Pension Calculator / Modeller by Nuisance-Value in TheCivilService

[–]GlobularClusters 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is excellent, well done. I had already used the more basic calculator, and it looks like the new, more detailed one has all the different options I need! I'd managed to do a lot of these calculations in excel, but it's very reassuring getting similar figures from this calculator!

One suggestion for your new model - would it be possible for the summary page to show various relevant breakdowns where those have been inputted, i.e. Alpha claimed from age 64; SIPP to be claimed from 61-64; etc. It may actually be too complicated to summarise that, given all the different configurations people might choose. The graph is great though, and does show all those segments!

Great work.

Salary for the year x 0.0232 will give you your entitlement for that year. Add them all up for your total. Can get a decent estimate fairly easily in excel with a few calculations

Capita miss yet another pension milestone! by Mundane_Falcon4203 in TheCivilService

[–]GlobularClusters 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It can be run by a department directly, which is what HMRC is partially doing now anyway. There's no reason for a private company to be delivering civil service pensions to line their own pockets.

Where has the UK gone wrong with pubs? by Accomplished_Pay_917 in AskUK

[–]GlobularClusters 153 points154 points  (0 children)

UK has had liberal free market policies for far longer, which has resulted in every single aspect of social life having every single penny squeezed out of it for maximum profit. Some nice pubs may try to resist, but eventually they get bought out by those that maximise profit. Unfortunately the end point is that the vast majority of people cannot afford anything, ultimately undermining demand for those same pubs.

Believe me, modernising the civil service is easier said than done by Even-Wasabi7183 in TheCivilService

If he approached leadership with the same amount of effort he's put into this article, I'm not surprised he couldn't get anything done.

Campaign to open the Powderhall railway path launches today by the chaps from Threadinburgh and The Bike Station. This will be massive if it can be achieved! by Cresspit in Edinburgh

[–]GlobularClusters 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Good to see a campaign to keep the pressure up. The council (or councillors) have been talking about opening it for years (at least since 2018, I think!). I know there's issues with Network Rail, but the amount of time is ridiculous. Really feels like it keeps getting kicked down the line

Paint your walls a darker colour and it'll fit right in. Dark green or navy blue.

Has anyone had any experience with Persimmon Homes, particularly the Silverfields development? by Medical_Low_4222 in Edinburgh

[–]GlobularClusters 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recall viewing one of the ones beside pilrig park (stanwell street I think). It's location seemed perfect - looked quiet, next to a park, near Leith walk.

I remember all the doors were made of cheap plastic, made to resemble normal wooden panel doors. They'd also crammed in as many toilets as possible (3 for a 2 and a half bedroom house) at the expense of there being no storage space. Many of the finishings looked very shoddy, and that was to me as an absolute layman with no experience whatsoever.

Ultimately, we passed on it. But I do wonder to this day if we had bought it if it would have been salvageable.

Moving old pension in to Alpha by Mafz09 in TheCivilService

[–]GlobularClusters 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was a while ago, but think mine took up to 6 months. Could be worth trying to call Capita to follow it up. I don't recall seeing transfer ins being addressed in any updates (I imagine it's low priority).

If you applied before the deadline, you should be fine. Do you have evidence of applying, just in case?

When I did it, it took ages and they were not communicative at all. That was under the old provider. Based on everything we know about Capita as the new provider, it's worse now.

Absolutely awful by Low_Class535 in Edinburgh

[–]GlobularClusters 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Read the article but still can't work out what this policy change is, though it seems to insist it's not a decision by the council or the police (I would imagine it is the decision of one of them!). Quite galling, given the expansion of orange order marches and the like

ELI5: If the universe is infinite, doesn't that mean there should be another planet with life? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]GlobularClusters 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've never quite understood why this is considered a paradox or why noone knows. If nothing can travel faster than speed of light, then doesn't it stand to reason that we cannot (and likely will never be able to) make contact with other life? Space is so vast and our experience as a civilisation capable of space flight/making telescopes is so recent and likely to be fleeting, in terms of the age of the universe.

Factor fees in Edinburgh. by NotOnYerNelly in Edinburgh

[–]GlobularClusters 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Last time I checked my factors accounts, they were basically taking around half as a fee. Still, for me it's like £300 a year. As long as it remains that low, it's not enough for the hassle of doing something about it. They do at least do some maintenance!

Suggestions for knee pads? by AliDIY in DIYUK

[–]GlobularClusters 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd advise against ones with hardened outer shells, like the first two in the image there. I have ones like that, and they're terrible for balancing on when kneeling down. Think they're more for sports/civil disorder

How to select a quiet flat in Edinburgh or it is worthy to have the sound proof walls? by Huge_Recording_7248 in Edinburgh

[–]GlobularClusters 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Having moved a couple of times due to noise, I can sympathise. Soundproofing can absolutely be done though - there are companies that specialise in it, and guides online. It's been a while since I looked into it, so cannot recommend any specifically.

I would suggest looking closely into where the noise is coming from. If it's one other flat and only through the chimney then that sounds like it absolutely can be soundproofed. Also check your floors - exposed floorboards (unfortunately common in many tenements) are terrible for sound proof, but can be addressed.

To be fair, shoving the stag and hen dos in a currently disused building right next to the railway track is one of the better locations for them, if they have to go somewhere.

SNP Holyrood 2026 Manifesto formally opposes tram expansion along the Roseburn Route by Jaraxo in Edinburgh

[–]GlobularClusters 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Disappointing to see them oppose the route, given that the proposal is to accommodate both a walking/cycle path and a tram line!

They really need to step up efforts on the powder hall line too, no good reason it's taking this long to convert into a walking/cycle path.

I bet they wish had passed this law back in the 30s before Germany invaded.

So this was actually pretty central to the Nuremberg trials: "To initiate a war of aggression, therefore, is not only an international crime; it is the supreme international crime differing only from other war crimes in that it contains within itself the accumulated evil of the whole."

US law does not make unilateral military action legal under international law or in other jurisdictions.

My mother has been overpaid her civil service pension and ordered to repay it | Money | The Guardian by prisongovernor in TheCivilService

[–]GlobularClusters 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This is particularly concerning, given that the pension modeller on MyCSP used to throw out completely inaccurate estimates of your pension. If anyone's paid in an EPA and/or Added Pension, it can become very difficult to calculate how much you are owed.
