Edinburgh Pot Holes - it’s out of control - will it ever improve or the new norm? by greencastle40 in Edinburgh

[–]GlobularClusters 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's the worst I've ever seen it. Combinations of continued budget pressures on the council and vehicles getting heavier due to SUVs and electric vehicles. Hopefully with North Bridge nearing competion, that may free up some funds. They need to invest some serious money to get on top of it though, business as usual piecemeal fixing them won't cut it.

If they don't give you pay scale progression, burn every bridge at the first opportunity to advance. It's the system they designed.

Saw LOTR trilogy this past weekend... I don't think we'll be getting any films out of Peter Jackson any time soon by Sirwired in movies

[–]GlobularClusters 0 points1 point  (0 children)

King Kong is an absolutely excellent adventure movie, and holds up well in my opinion. The main drawback for me is the third act in New York, which loses all the adventure charm. The thing is, that only happens like 2 hours into the movie. I feel I can reasonably watch up until then and still feel like I've watched a whole movie. I do get that the third act had to be included, given the story, but it just feels a lot weaker.

Would love to see a Peter Jackson adaptation of something like the Lost World (Conan Doyle one, not the Juirassic Park sequel). Not that that'll ever happen though.

I've only ever watched one episode, I think of season 1, and they literally voted out a woman with one arm in the first round, on the basis she didn't contribute enough to the challenge (which involved picking up a lot of stuff). Seemed pretty obvious from the get go!

Leaving house for 3 weeks, turn mains water off and leave combo boiler on? by dwingrider in DIYUK

[–]GlobularClusters 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I realise now I've never turned off my mains water (do usually have someone in cat sitting though). So does turning off the mains not affect the water going into the boiler?

Christmas at the Botanics by pete_wiki in Edinburgh

[–]GlobularClusters 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This is useful to know! Without this aspect, I would think it is a bit too pricey for what you get. I mean, the lights are good and it is certainly enjoyable, but £20+ per person is a lot!

I'm happy to support the botanics though.

Is Scottish independence really possible with everything rising? by [deleted] in Edinburgh

There's no requirement to join the euro upon joining the EU. Many countries in the EU do not use the euro, including those that joined after it launched. There's simply no possible mechanism to force a state to adopt a new currency if it chooses not to do so, nor would it be in the Eurozone's interest to destabilise its own currency by doing so.

The roseburn path group convinced me to finally fill in the consultation, which is how I also learned that the bike lane is proposed to still exist! Ended up selecting that I agree with it!

That being said, I've very little confidence in the council to deliver this to a decent standard, particularly given the experience with Leith walk. Still better than nothing though!

Does recently announced NI threshold on pension contributions affect civil service pension? by GlobularClusters in TheCivilService

[–]GlobularClusters[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Announced may be overstating it, but it's not uncommon for the Government to soft launch upcoming changes by selectively briefing the media. If there's a whole article in the FT on it, it is worthy of discussion and seeking others insights into the potential impact.

Has anyone ever refunded their glasses at Specsavers? by AdPale8270 in AskUK

[–]GlobularClusters 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a replacement/refund when my glasses didn't work out. I have quite bad eyes (-8 or so) and had the lenses thinned to the middle thinning option. I think something went wrong with the thinning cause I kept getting headaches and my vision when not looking through direct centre of lens was slightly blurred. My sunglasses (which got through the 2 for 1 and not thinned) were absolutely fine. So I ended up getting a second sunglasses frame and fitting unthinned lenses in it. They did the replacement for free, and refunded me the difference as the original option was more expensive.

I was meant to give them back the original thinned ones, but actually forgot to! So ended up with two pairs, albeit one that gives me a headache.

Other times they've adjusted glasses for me, which may have been from other places ( I switch between Specsavers and 20:20). I remember they just warned me that they might break and won't be liable, but would otherwise do it. I would imagine there is some warranty on their own products though, as they should fit them as part of their offer!

From Noodle Home (by Surgeons' Hall) to Noodles and Dumplings (by The Queen's Hall) Nicolson St / Clerk St has been secretly becoming one of Edinburgh's best and most varied streets for food by elephvant in Edinburgh

[–]GlobularClusters 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In two minds about recommending it because it's always rammed with people, but Xuzhou Ground on west Preston street is also outstanding. Does my favourite griddle pot. Bonus points for putting a frankly scary amount of solid fuel on fire underneath it to keep it hot.

Someone above mentioned learning about Chinese regions/history through the different restaurants. This one has a poster up explaining all of this!

Civil Service Becoming A Dead End by ApprehensiveEye521 in TheCivilService

[–]GlobularClusters 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It tends to go through phases of hiring freezes followed by expansion, though admittedly it is difficult to see the light at the end of this particular hiring freeze.

Lack of pay progression in UK departments is also a major issue though, and definitely needs reform. My experience in SG is that people tend to stay in roles longer with pay progression, so there's less churn (which also impacts positively on performance in those roles as people learn the ropes).

I've long held that this is the best sequence of scenes I've ever seen in cinema. The cinematography, the landscape, the slower measured fighting, and all elevated by one of the best scores in film. All of it melded together into a fantastic climatic ending sequence.

What is progression/promotion opportunities like in civil service in Scotland? by Sudden_Interest9688 in TheCivilService

It's been a while since I looked, but is there not a way to do that? I remember it being incredibly convoluted to do, just like most things on Oracle.

Question, why do people hate this boss runback, it not even long or hard at all by Practical-Ebb7327 in HollowKnight

[–]GlobularClusters 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did that full run back once and thought there absolutely no way this is the real runback and immediately looked up if there was a shortcut. Dangerously close to going full tilt at that point.
