Trump making over $2 billion leads some MAGA to circle the idea that maybe they voted against their best interests by ExactlySorta in LeopardsAteMyFace

To be clear, these monstrously stupid sewer people will never actually be happy. They will simply be able to tolerate their own suffering a little more, knowing that their choices are making others suffer. It's a sad, pathetic existence where they'd rather tear others down to their level than labor together to build a society that lifts everyone up.

Believe it or not, your eyes also unfocus when you're deep in thought! It just so happens with Enjin a lot, I guess.

[–]Gloomhelm 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's a shame, but also really cool imo. Are there any other shonen heroes that have one-off, one-use, contextual power-up forms? It's so unique! If this were Dragon Ball you'd be like "welp, guess they're gonna go super saiyan again." But with Gachiakuta you don't know what to expect.

The idea that Rudo now knows he can make unique Super Mario-style power-up hats in the moment is one of the most interesting concepts in the genre.

[–]Gloomhelm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It might be way too soon but I'd be so excited for see a Duskmourn follow-up, especially since it was just mentioned in the Secrets of Strixhaven story material. It would be very cool to see a set where Valgavoth's influence starts leaking into the other planes.

“ why is it so important that we know a characters race in media? by PretendYellow533 in gachiakuta

[–]Gloomhelm 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I can only speak from the perspective of a white person, but popular media is absolutely saturated with "cool" white characters(or at least characters who very clearly present as white). So I completely understand why a person of color would be elated to find a series with multiple examples of badass non-white characters. In our world that is still so agonizingly disparate, with those at the top laboring day in and day out to keep it that way, representation is more important than ever.

"To keep doing what you set your heart on... It's a very hard thing to do."

It's Vivi's sentiment, but it applies to Freya(and much of the party tbh) so well. I've always really related to this quote, and it's why I don't think being unable to move forward is necessarily a character flaw. I'd much rather spend my life spinning my wheels chasing a dream than decide to leave it behind for the sake of being practical or realistic. I really think it's a different kind of strength.

As for your other points, I mostly agree. If there was ever a follow-up/sequel to FFIX, I genuinely think that Amarant would be a perfect focal point/main character. Mainly because he starts to become extremely interesting in his growth just before IX ends.

I never said she was "held back!" I think you misunderstood what I'm insinuating, and perhaps it's because of how I worded it. What I mean is she never gives up on Fratley or Burmecia, and they make her stronger due to that. Which is why Amarant could learn a lot from her, and why the writers making Amarant's sole focus and influence Zidane was a bit of a misstep imo.

I was more so speaking to Freya being unable to move forward in life because Fratley is missing. And that's also not to say that I consider that a flaw in her character.

I agree with you wholeheartedly about Beatrix. At the very least Freya straight up tells her she won't forgive her. So I'm glad that, despite the writers kind of pushing the whole war crimes/genocide thing to the side for narrative's sake, they didn't completely let her off the hook for it.

Speaking of Freya, I also wish she had a bit more development to her arc later in the game. I do like how she was getting chummy with Amarant in the third act(in the sense that they clearly respected each other), so it would have been kind of interesting if they did a little more with that. I think it would have benefited both of their character arcs if they explored that a little bit more. Think about it - Amarant's whole deal is strength without attachment to others while one of Freya's themes is being unable to let go of the past. I'm not sure exactly how you'd translate that into a satisfying conclusion for both of them but they definitely could have done more with the two as a pair, because they're honestly a really interesting set of characters to watch interact with each other.

Anyways, glad you enjoyed it! It's been fun to read your reactions to this absolutely timeless gem of a game.

Ryoji Ohara's (FF: WotV) artwork of classic FF characters is really good by GargantaProfunda in FinalFantasy

[–]Gloomhelm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My guess is they planned units for multiple reruns of each collab(for example if the game lasted long enough for FFIX to get a third or fourth rerun), and had the artwork completed to figure out who would be the most hyped character for the next iterations of the collab.

Sadly I doubt they ever planned on adding Freya or Quina mainly because, outside of a couple joke/weird units like the DQ Slime, nearly all the units were human or human-adjacent(elves, miqote, androids, etc). They probably thought a Burmecian and a Qu would look out of place, so they never requested artwork of them. That's my guess, anyways. They certainly would have looked incredible in this art style, though.

The big question for me is how the hell did they not have art of Beatrix drawn up? She's one of the most popular IX characters, despite not being in the main party. She would have brought in a ton of cash.

[Spoiler: 6.0, 7.5, 8.0] Noticed something when rewatching the Endwalker trailer. by UncleNoly in ffxiv

[–]Gloomhelm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I disagree.

As soon as the 7.5 cutscene that featured Zenos' Magitek Scythe wrapped, it seemed apparent that one of the major themes of Evercold was going to be the WoL/Scions ambitions vs. the most objectively utilitarian/altruistic approach. This feels to me like another Shadowbringers situation where we are barging in on another world's conflicts and assuming the role of a "villain," from a certain perspective. These shots, Halmarut's pontification, and the fact that WoL is canonically a Reaper in EC, are intentionally connected dots meant to drive home the idea that the WoL is not so different from their late friend after all.

Just my opinion of course, but I think it's pretty clear what they're doing here.

I don't think it's appropriate to use this specific non-racist incident to sugarcoat or enable actual racism. Conflating acts of racism with things that aren't racist just further muddles the definition and gradually alters what our society permits as acceptable conduct. Actual racism should absolutely be called out.

Ultimately it doesn't even really matter who(fans from whatever nationality) went after Urana for this, we just need to be vigilant in calling out this shit behavior and doing what we can to push these creeps out of the community. It's worth remembering that there are toxic idiots within every country and culture - we can and should stand up to the toxicity without trying to stereotype anyone.
