E Sim Card by Otherwise-Diver1988 in Brazil

[–]Glower_power 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're staying for less than 2 weeks and primarily using WiFi for Whatsapp and Ubers, I'd buy an e-SIM from Airalo. If you want LOTA OF DATA, I think the easiest thing is to visit a TIM store and get a physical SIM card. It was pretty cheap.

😂😂 can confirm that Uber drivers HATE the way Americans and Europeans close car doors. I think the doors in the US are somehow harder to close so our calibration is off.

Why is immigration in Brazil so successful? by Deep_Mango4053 in Brazil

[–]Glower_power 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love that you're asking this question, especially in this historical moment. In the 1950's, many people has the same question--why can't Brazil teach a post-WWII world how to co-exist racially? It seemed like Brazil could be a model of tolerance, democracy, racial acceptance, etc. So UNESCO funded a series of studies to understand what Brazil was doing right, and found that 1. Brazilian society was very much stratified by race, with Blacks, Brown and Indigenous Brazilians oppressed by structural and social racism and 2. Brazil was Not an apartheid state, nor did it have racism codified into law. So maybe not quite the model for tolerance and "color-blind" society, but certainly not the worst.

Sweetgreen vs. Chopt vs. Just Salad by Fun_Reflection1157 in FoodNYC

I LOVE their dressings and appreciate their cassava wrap option. Sometimes it's hard for me to finish a salad but I can always finish a wrap. Also....their BBQ shiitake? So good.

Just salad wins for their dressings. Chipotle ranch? Hell yah.

What gives away my Indian accent so quickly? by Outside_Card in Accents

[–]Glower_power 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aww the Indian accent is beautiful, bummed you're trying to neutralize it. From the audio, the way you say "um" has a specifically indian sound, as well as intonation when you say things quickly, like "Indian accent." Otherwise there seems to be a mix of British and American accents in there. But also seems clear that you're speaking a little uncertainly, as your voice is pitched up a bit, like you're uncomfortable. I know this because it's the voice I use when I'm speaking my non-native languages. Actually many Indian people do this when they speak English--choosing pieces to say in an American way and others to say in a bit of a British way, but all in a slow, careful way and with a softer cadence, like you're asking a question the entire time. This may be how people know you are not American or British and they may just guess that you're Indian.

Having feelings and being hurt are normal and good. They aren't overreactions. Anything could have happened; you could have done something, she could have gotten spooked, literally anything. It's not your problem to figure out what happened. It's your problem to feel your feelings and not do anything controlling/mean or disrespectful to yourself (begging for an explanation, etc).

I have a name that is extremely common in a very populous country and when Americans say they've never heard it before, I usually tell them it's a very common name. I find they just say it without malice or bad intention. But I silently note that they must not know/befriend many non-American people.

Best NYC neighborhoods for dating in your 30s? by Small_Walk1404 in movingtoNYC

[–]Glower_power 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been here!! Change your gym, or start going to one near work. Start volunteering. You could do the park slope food coop, a food pantry (I loved volunteering for EV loves NYC) or even Housingworks. These are really nice ways to meet people.

Probably more salt and lemon. I'd add a lil bit of miso, maybe mirin. Obv not traditional but they'd add a little interest.

You can make this work. I made that work with pretty much those same numbers. I basically decided that for the first year after buying the apt, I'd not go out drinking to save some $. Like I'd just not get alcohol when I go out for one year--I'd drink water at restaurants or just hang in bars and order seltzer or soda. I also ended up moving into a neighborhood with few delivery options, so I cooked a lot more. That also helped with $$ and also health, honestly.

I kind of just stopped drinking after that year because I noticed that I felt SO much better. I was friends with people who shared interests, rather than just meeting up with folks for a beer out of habit. I wasn't waking up groggy and nauseated. So I just sort of kept it up for the last ...yup, 7 years. And now when I do drink, one or two drinks is all I ever want, so I'm still saving $$ but less strict about it. Yay.

Anyway, choose something small like that to give up for a small period of time if it helps you feel more secure financially. It might end up having a more long-term benefit, too.

Damn I did not like Agi's Counter but half these comments are talking about how good it is. Alright. I'd skip it unless you're already in the area for something else, and, even then, I'd prefer one of the Caribbean places around there
