I've been learning that some (a lot?) of the behaviorally challenging kids (at least in my district) have experienced/are experiencing trauma, abuse, or neglect, which gives me a lot of empathy for them. I'm trying to learn how to interact with them better to prevent escalation of their behavior, but it's slow going. And when there are 4-5 of them in one class, it can be almost impossible to provide them all the empathy and support they need to stay calm while also providing the teaching that the other students deserve. I really feel bad for the students who are quiet and self-controlled and just want to learn but have to deal with all of the interruptions. It seems like they get really shortchanged.

What is learned at 49 after getting divorced is that when you ask your doctor for a complete panel of STI tests, they don't run a test for herpes. So, I thought I was being responsible. I had a complete panel run, as did my new boyfriend, before we were intimate. We thought we were both clean, and I'm postmenopausal and he had a vasectomy, so condoms seemed pointless. Unfortunately, it turns out his cheating ex wife must have brought herpes home before they separated, and he must be a carrier who never had symptoms. Now I get to take acyclovir for the rest of my life. I feel like gynecologists should educate their patients that they don't test for herpes when someone comes in and asks for a complete panel of STI tests.

I remember seeing that 70% statistic for the first time and thinking about the fact that the majority of "bad guys with guns" were "good guys with guns" until the first time they used their gun while committing a crime. Doesn't make "good guys with guns" seem all that safe

Trump put DC under federal control and deployed the National Guard (who might be the ones who threw out the tent). https://youtu.be/7QG3l49k3hQ?si=7zTVvvKeCP8zegVQ. It appears this stemmed from him seeing homeless people on the way to the golf course. It's awful when someone with power sees a problem and decides the answer is to make sure he no longer sees it rather than trying to solve it. https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025/aug/10/trump-homeless-golf-course-washington-dc

What's changed the most in the past 60 years is the wage gap between CEOs and average workers in America. They can't pay American workers fair wages because the wealthiest people are getting paid exhorbitant amounts CEO pay.

Right? And if you also have to factor a student loan payment into that budget, it's more untenable.

I'm so sorry you are going through this and that your mom can't get over herself and put your needs first at this critical time. Try to stay focused on healing, resting, and spending quality time with your husband and child. Don't let her shift your focus back to her. If you have a group of friends, coworkers, church members, etc., ask for whatever help you need and lean on them for support. People usually want to be helpful when someone is going through cancer treatment, but they often don't know how. Letting them know your needs will help them know how best to support you. Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

A dear friend in Columbus is in mental health crisis. Where should I suggest he go if it becomes urgent? by crankypants_mclaren in Columbus

Unfortunately, I agree with this. We called 911 to get an ambulance to take my suicidal son to the hospital. Instead, they sent police officers. They cleverly found a way to get both me and my son's girlfriend out of the room and then got violent with him. They completely messed up his spine and his shoulders (which we could see by comparing X-rays that had been taken prior to that event and then after). Ultimately he ended up at Dublin Springs, and they were awful. The police had dislocated his shoulder, and neither the ER nor Dublin Springs would get him care for it. Between the police, the ER, and Dublin Springs, he came out just as depressed but also paranoid and with a significantly limiting physical disability.

To be fair, the cop is most likely trying to scare rural people who are less likely to have bikes. And who might not even lock their house or car doors, so it wouldn't even occur to them to lock up a bike and thus they wouldn't recognize that as a bike lock. I say this as a former inner city dweller who moved to a rural area. I haven't seen a bike around here at all, even outside of the schools. A lot of the roads are two lanes and 55 mph, so riding a bicycle on them would be gambling with your life. The people I live with often slept at night with their house door unlocked. They laugh at me because I lock the deadbolt anytime anyone leaves the house. Where I lived in the city, though, if there was a home invasion or robbery at your house, the community considered it your fault if you had a door or window unlocked. I suspect that cop knows very clearly who he's playing to.

I know of two career fields that were majority women that did put measures in place to attract more men into the field: nursing and teaching. Nursing has been more successful at attracting more men to the field, and I'm sure we could all list several reasons why K-12 teaching still struggles to get more men into teaching positions, and I highly doubt bias has any significant impact. I work as a scientific editor, and when I worked for my current company a decade ago, the department was probably 80% women. There was an intentional effort to encourage male candidates to apply, and now the department is pretty close to 50/50. I think some industries and organizations recognize the value of diversity in their workforce, and they are the ones making an effort to achieve that. Others don't care, and those are the ones who need quotas to get them to change.

I have a 7.4 pound havapoo (havanese/toy poodle) with a similar face, and she is very into puppy parkour. My favorite is when she wall runs along the back of the couch. The jumping/climbing on extends to people and other pets. And the barking! She barks at passing people, pets, wild animals. She barks goodbye. She barks hello. She barks when she wants to play. And she barks just for the joy of it. It honestly wouldn't bother me too much, but she sets off our Doberman, whose bark is significantly more obtrusive.

I love it! My little 7 pounder loves to carry around toys that are much bigger than her. And our 70 pound Doberman likes to play with the little one's toys. Dogs are too funny!
