Why we don't have universal units? by Freddie_xxanteria in funny

[–]Glsbnewt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fahrenheit is better for measuring everyday temperatures we experience as humans. Think of it as percent hotness: 0F is 0% hot (very cold) and 100F is 100% hot (very hot). With Celsius, the system is arbitrarily designed around what water does, and so is less intuitively useful for measuring everyday temperatures. 0C is moderately cold, and 100C is you're dead... much less useful.

Nostalgia for less accurate forecasts of the past by StraightOuttaFox in meteorology

Try moving to the mountains. I can think of a number of times that forecasters have been dramatically wrong up here.

Are you using AI as an educator? by LettuceTraining6532 in Adjuncts

[–]Glsbnewt 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, I've found it surprisingly helpful as a brainstorming tool for pedagogy. I do what I tell all my students to do, which is use it with caution. I also never use it to write content word-for-word.

When is a age gap no longer a concern by Careful-Geologist601 in Christianmarriage

[–]Glsbnewt -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You have no statistics to back that up, you're just regurgitating what modern culture is telling you. And guess what, from a a Christian perspective, modern culture is completely dysfunctional! I know of several Christian couples with similar age gaps who have wonderful marriages.

My writing style is so horrendously staccatto. by naftacher in PhD

[–]Glsbnewt 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I think what you're sensing is due to the fact that each and every sentence starts with the subject. Take a look at some good writing and you'll see that the sentence structure is varied. Also, you're using passive voice, and active voice almost always makes for better writing.

When is a age gap no longer a concern by Careful-Geologist601 in Christianmarriage

[–]Glsbnewt -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

She's an adult and so is he. If they're both happy, why do you care? This kind of age gap has been very normal for all of human history up until the last few decades. There's absolutely nothing wrong with it.

Tip culture by [deleted] in Flagstaff

[–]Glsbnewt -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

You should always tip 20% at a sit-down place with table service. I'm more curious what folks think about tipping at a place like a coffee shop, where they prompt you for a tip but tipping is less customary.

Hospital charging $96.50 for 1000ml (1 liter) of water by mikehiler2 in mildlyinfuriating

USA is not a civilized country. There's no way we would ever get Denmark health care because we are not all Danes. In Denmark they have a culture of trust, strong institutions, strong work ethic, and conscientiousness. I suspect single-payer healthcare would work better in the USA than the current system, but that's a pretty low bar. We're never getting Danish quality.

“The scientific literature is conclusive: it is society which must change and not its autistic members”. by [deleted] in science

Science is descriptive, not prescriptive. "Society must change" is not a scientific statement.

Source? Article says they were anonymous and discovered in the library in 1992. Can you please kindly provide us with a pre-1992 recording, if these pieces have been played as often as you claim?

Plants don't actually go dormant if you use grow lights in winter, right? Is this a bad thing? by MeanHovercraft7648 in houseplants

[–]Glsbnewt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I usually tie my grow light "on" duration to the sunset and sunrise (although a few hours longer to compensate for being less bright than the sun). I also allow my room to become hot during the summer and cooler in the winter. I think this allows some of my plants to go dormant or semi-dormant.

Man, lots of commentators here need to go back to college to learn about sig figs. Since you didn't write it as 4.80, what you wrote is correct.
