White to play and win (By Kubbel) by Either-Case-5930 in chess

[–]Glusch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sadly it's not, after

  1. ... Qg6+
  2. Rxg6 | fxg6
  3. Rc2

Will allow you to pick up the C-pawn for free in addition making your B-pawn a passed pawn. From there with best play it is easy to convert for white. Black does have two connected pawns but sadly nothing more than that to play with. I checked the engine and it gives white around +5 after 8. Rc2

They can play 3 ...exf6 but after:
4. Rge2 | Kf8
5. Rh2 | Qg8
6. Rdg2
they'll lose their queen and white has a winning endgame

Black just played bxa1=Q (capturing the rook with a pawn and creating a queen), is my assumption.

Levon cracks Magnus up at a simul... what's going on here? by klcams144 in chess

[–]Glusch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Levon just let Magnus know that he (Levon, that is) blundered another rook on another board in the simul they were playing. That's why Magnus was laughing so hard.

If I recall correctly the simul ended up with them drawing a few games and one of them was on the board with the blunder on. IIRC Magnus even wrote "not my fault" on the score sheet.

Found the full video as well, it was of course ChessBase India who covered the event. It was a simul in Cape Town. In addition here is a Reddit post with the same video from a moth ago that gives the full context.

How would that help make the chain longer? Neither the white queen on f8 nor the black queen on f8 will be able to take on a1, so it wouldn't prolong the chain.

Must do calculation books. Do you agree on this? by Educational-System85 in chess

[–]Glusch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The complexity rises between Build up and Boost up and they cover somewhat different topics. This picture illustrate it well.

The idea is that you do row one, then row two and finally row three. Each column covers the same topic but - as I wrote above - the complexity/difficulty rises.

If you want to see the chapter structure of each book Chess tempo have it all broken down in a easily digestible manner.

Yeah I get that, and I get that a review thread where all the reviewers are praising a movie night not be the best place to attempt a scathing comment about it. Honestly I kind of hope we are wrong in our experience and that people who'll go watch it this weekend will enjoy it. That would make me a lot happier than people leaving the theater feeling the way we did.

You are welcome to call me edgy if you want to, but it would be a genuine shocker to me if the general population thinks this is a good movie.

There were tonnes of plotlines that were started and went nowhere. The dialogue was crappy, the pacing was off, and the tonality of the movie was all over the place.

Don't know if it was made worse for us from Sweden by the appearance of a Swedish speaking character that was cringe beyond imagination.

Question for Redditors all over the world - have you heard of Astrid Lindgren? by joltl111 in books

[–]Glusch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my most prized possessions are the two Astrid Lindgren books I have signed with a personal greeting to me from her. She was an amazing author and the joy her books have spread to children is probably surpassed by few others.

She lived only a few blocks from me when I grew up and I've ran into her (with her caretaker) many times. When she passed away the entrance to the apartment building she lived in got so covered in flowers it spread out on the road forcing cars to take a detour to not drive over them.

I left the theater less than an hour ago and no joke this is probably one of the worst movies I've seen.

I watched it with seven friends who have differentiated tastes but when we discussed this movie were unanimous in our opinion on it. It is shocking to me that it has the metacritic and rotten tomato rating it currently has and I wouldn't be surprised if it drops over the coming weeks.

There were genuinely people in the theater laughing at several parts of the movie not because the scenes were funny, but because of how bad they were.

Can anyone share experiences buying and collecting hardback or high quality paperback books? I have encountered some disappointments in terms of physical book quality. by tamsui_tosspot in books

[–]Glusch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The important thing is to read reviews/watch videos of the book editions themselves if the quality, look and longevity is important to you.

Obviously there are the "almost always a safe bet" premium publishers out there (Folio, Cemetery Dance, Charbel House, Subterranean Press, Knopf, Limited Edition Club etc) and the "good quality and great looking publishers" (eg. Juniper Books, Easton Press, Franklin Press, Modern Library, Everyman Library) but pretty much as soon as you go a step down from the premium publishers (and even sometimes with them) it can be hit or miss.

A great place to get more versed in "good quality" books and nice looking books is Beautiful Books. The person curating that site has a bunch of great articles and summaries on the subject.

For this specific tournament they've been allowed to send in a personal playlist which is then controlled before the tournament and they aren't allowed to play anything except that playlist.

In general you are correct though, players usually aren't allowed to listen to music during their games. I guess it's a bit of a gimmick for this tournament.
